You WOULD post photos of a town that looks like West Virginia-by-the-Sea.

I don't get the resemblance. I only see one pickup truck parked in a front yard, and it's sitting on its own wheels, not cement blocks. It doesn't have a big, ugly, mean dog chained to it either, and I don't see any rusty mobile homes with duct-taped broken windows.

Sorry, you must be referring to Saginaw.

It reminds me of an Alaskan town (as portrayed in movies/tv - never been myself)

.... You get the soft white sand of Florida backed by northern pine trees. It creates a feeling of disbelief. Then there are the 200-foot rock cliffs at the ends of the beaches. The whole park is set up like that- beach, rock cliffs, beach, rock cliffs. After that, there are the 300-foot tall Grand Sable Sand Dunes. The park even has some excellent waterfalls in the forests. Talk about a paradise! It would take weeks to see everything.

...

We spent a week on vacation there.  We would hike about an hour from the trailhead, then hike along a wilderness beach for hours in a vibe of slack,  picking up pebbles and watching for wildlife, then take a different trail back to the car.  The campground west of town has sites on Lake Superior.  We had Sandhill Cranes flying over our site on a few days.  One can take a ferry over to Grand Island and cycle all day, and there is a very excellent cruise along the cliffs.  It over an hour long and worth the price.

kronk, kronk

Ahh pure Michigan

Gorge-eous! I especially like the color of the water and waves in the first one. I can imagine some rioting in the streets if Wisconsin were to ever want to annex this neighboring territory. Of course, if you have any more UP towns we'll be happy to have a look: just such a unique region.

This cliff has a big nose  :-D

Beautiful! Now I see what all the fuss is about! Great photos.

I spend quite a bit of time in the UP.  Great people, tough as nails.  I'll try to grab some pictures this year during my travels.  Anyway, a few years ago part of the pictured rocks (Miner's Castle) collapsed and apparently there were some fisherman in the water nearby.  I remember reading about it, apparently Miner's Castle was a navigational landmark.  Found this and learned some more about the Pictured Rocks.
