Posted October 20, 201014 yr Although many of the Washington Avenue Historic District mansions were demolished for apartments, the corridor and adjacent Black River East Falls are quite pleasant.
October 20, 201014 yr I always did like Elyria, the Hamilton of the Lakes. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 20, 201014 yr a nice area. there is also a large falls at cascade park. I always did like Elyria, the Hamilton of the Lakes. i remain quite biased toward its northern ghetto cousin, the gary of lake erie ;)
October 21, 201014 yr The upper tier of the falls looks like a man-made dam that would have provided hydraulic power for a mill. Is their any remnant of one, or is there any historic info about it posted at the site?

Herman Ely, a Massachusetts native who purchased this land as part of a Western Reserve transaction, established a small settlement in 1816. Eventually a mill produced meal and flour for nearby settlements. A flood destroyed the Red Mill in 1832. Foundation remains can be seen today near the West Falls. Ruins of a hydroelectric plant from the early 1900s can be seen near the East Falls.
