We had the pleasure of getting a mention in the last paragraph of the article.  Very grateful.

We are pleased to finally present to you our first short documentary, which chronicles the progress of Spring in Our Steps thus far.

This film is soaked in sweat and tears, and we hope you are as proud of it as we are.

Thanks a bunch, guys.

We will be returning to St. Joe Street in Mt. Auburn today, for our eighth alley cleanup this year. We seek to have the North Wendell Alley Steps reopened, which have been closed for 30 years, according to a nearby property owner. The stairway connects one end of St. Joe at Loth to the other end at Rice.

Reopening a previously closed staircase has never happened in Cincinnati, as I discovered from the meeting minutes of the Planning Commission, in the heat of the Collins Avenue Steps debate. Thus, this is extremely important as a test case. We don't simply want them open, after we clean up the surface neglect and overgrowth. Other techniques must be employed to encourage safe use of the stairway and serve as an enhancement, not a detriment, to the neighborhood. The difference with the North Wendell Alley Steps is that iron fencing creates an  barrier that cannot be breached. Other difference include non-functional light fixtures, overgrowth, trash, fallen branches, and large item waste. Not to mention the vacant residential properties. Nonetheless, we are working to set a positive precedent.

Just wanted to mention that I found some incredible steps the other day, leading from Jackson Hill Park to Mulberry. If anyone is ever interested in doing some work on them, let me know, cause they're pretty amazing.

Last week I walked up the steps on Reading Road by High Street up to Liberty Hill. Although there was nothing posted on the Reading  entrance, when I hit the top there was a bar across the entrance so the steps may have actually been closed. There was some deterioration but other than that it was a pleasant climb. Is there any interest in restoring this section of stairs?

oh, something like this: http://www.blogotr.com/otr/the-main-street-mosaic-steps/

Great shot. Where in Jackson Hill Park did you take that?

I'm sure Blue Line would be interested.

Actually, they are going to be redone by DOTE. Reviews are undergoing final review. It'll be the final steps project from the 2011 capital improvements budget money.

@OTR, no not really like that. These steps are long overgrown, and quite neglected so there would have to be a lot of work done prior to something like the mosaic steps being possible. Here is what they looked like in 1939,

I'm in. I'd love to carve out a path for these steps. They have been one of the great mysteries from old photographs of stairways.

I started keeping track of the number of steps on each of the stairways...unfortunately, I stopped not long after starting...but here's my list so far:

Art Museum Steps: 91

Court Street Steps: 54

Monestery Street Steps: 123

Monestery Extension: 53

Oregon Street Steps: 104

Playhouse in the Park Steps: 48

I just walked up the Warner St Steps from McMicken to Fairview Park Dr and counted 203 steps.  I'm wondering if that might be the longest set in the city.

^^^  I walked these steps today.  The entrance at the top of the hill is overgrown, but the steps are pretty much intact.  They are BY FAR the coolest set of steps in the city and I would gladly volunteer time to clean them up.  Yves Beher, we should set a date to clean them up.  I'm curious if Spring in our Steps would be able to help...as they're entirely within the park and not city property.  Doesn't anyone know who to contact at the parks department?

Seriously...walk the steps and you'll be amazed!  From the playground at Jackson Hill Park walk West until you can't go any further...then just keep going.  It's fantastic!

All these old b&w pictures from the clear-cut days of Cincinnati make it look like it's in Southern California.

I work a ton, but I'd love to join in if someone set up a cleanup event.

I have a list of people who've volunteered to clean them up. Spring in Our Steps is on board too since Christian did some of the clearing with me this summer.

If you'd like to be included in any future cleanup group, let me know the best way to contact you. You can message me via UO, FB, twitter or email

this is a great classic uo thread, but every damn time i see it pop up i immediately start singing the lights of cincinnati by scott walker like cartman did with come sail away -- lol!
