Posted October 30, 201014 yr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Article published October 30, 2010 Ottawa River cleanup finishes under budget Effort in North Toledo ranks among largest in Great Lakes By TOM HENRY BLADE STAFF WRITER One of the largest cleanups in Great Lakes history - a $47 million improvement to a 5 1/2-mile stretch of the Ottawa River west of Suder Avenue - was completed on time and came in $2 million under budget. Scott Cieniawski, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency project manager, told The Blade the six-month phase, which began in earnest on May 5, was declared over this week. That happened after the latest round of sampling results showed no evidence of excessive cancer-causing PCBs and other heavy pollutants left in parts of the riverbed where 242,000 cubic yards - 290,400 tons - of contaminated sediment had been removed, he said.
