Posted October 31, 201014 yr tokyo: ginza the ginza is tokyo’s most famous neighborhood and it’s traditional downtown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginza *for mood music, there is of course only one song to be played while you look at this thread! :banger: what better place to start? gojira aka godzilla in front of toho studio :-) godzilla and walk of fame in front of toho studios “whoooa noo, there goes tokyo, go go godzilla!….zillagod zillagod zillagod!” palace hotel - the lobby and stone garden outside are pretty famous http://www.palacehotelstokyo.com/history.php old ginza ukiyo-e scene in the lobby it’s fun to take photos in japan because everyone else is obsessed too haha! the original sapporo lion beer hall (1899, rebuilt 1934) http://www.planettokyo.com/restaurants/index.cfm/fuseaction/detail/ID/328/ tokyo has some slick new h&m buildings, that kind of surprised me a couple terrible shlocky looking intersections here, but hey at least it’s still super dense :wtf: peeps sidestreets & alleyways tatarazuka theater on the right http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Takarazuka_Theater we’re shopping! ginza dept store shopping - this one is matsuzukaya one of the famous tokyo department store depachika (basement fancy food court) food stands… …but for our purposes the best thing about tokyo dept stores are the open roof courts! fancl indeed! construction across the street view from the other end of the rooftop so this roof deck is sort of a combo beer hall, kiddie park & this being japan yes it has a shrine too! yurakucho yakitori alley -- we are here early in the morning, so check out full nighttime action here: http://www.nihonsun.com/2009/07/13/yakitori-alley-oishikatta/ no doubt getting ready for the afterwork crowd ! edit - more on this place from a fussy traveler: http://www.notquitenigella.com/2008/07/06/yakitori-alley-at-yurakucho-tokyo/ *timeout for a ginza factoid: ginza is named after the silver-coin mint established there in 1612 during the edo period. i am sure you will have no problem finding your way around inside this building! :? land of the salaryman yūrakuchō center building (yūrakuchō mullion) at the sukiyabashi intersection chikatetsu aka subway entrances wako department store (founded 1881) the iconic ginza wako is located in one of the only buildings to survive war bombing here (1932) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wako_(retailer) mitsukoshi dept store (founded 1673), across the street from the wako building http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsukoshi note: mitsukoshi merged with isetan dept stores in 2008. ^ Utagawa Hiroshige printed an Ukiyo-e, in which Mt. Fuji and Echigoya are located as landmarks. Echigoya (越後屋)is the former name of Mitsukoshi named after the former province of Echigo. Currently the headquarters of Mitsukoshi is located on the left side of the street (banks: SMBC on the right side, BOJ down the street). well that’s about it from the streets of ginza tokyo *** hope you liked the ginza tour! ***
