Why would a buddy of mine have seen six BART cars on flatbed semis being towed up I-71 today?

I actually see this pretty routinely going on I-76 through Medina county towards Akron.   This has been going on for several years.  I'd always assumed there is some sort of service depot to the east, but the economics for that doesn't seem to make sense.  Also I saw an article about BART retiring cars recently, thought maybe they get recycled somewhere in the east.  I'd love to know if you find out!

We saw them on E I-270, right before the I-71 N exit. This did not help the always-present traffic disaster between 23 and 71, but my kid was pretty excited to get a good look at them stopped in the backup.

Interesting article.  One thing it mentions is that Atlanta held back on building new infill transit stations because of the cost. Why not then build them as mid-rise mixed-use stations apartments/condos and some ground-level retail?

the languishing green line project in mpls —

As Green Line extension languishes, some lawmakers want future light rail in state hands

There’s a bill moving through the Minnesota Legislature that, if approved, would take authority over future light rail construction away from the Metropolitan Council and give that responsibility to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

It’s prompted, in part, by the Met Council’s handling of the controversial Southwest light rail project, which is years behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget.

MTA rolls out cell service between stations on Midtown’s 42nd Street Shuttle

By Ramsey Khalifeh
Published Sep 4, 2024

Riders on the 42nd Street Shuttle can finally take a phone call or doom scroll on social media thanks to a new cell network installed on the line, MTA officials announced Wednesday.

The technology upgrade to the two-stop connection marks a small, early step in the MTA’s push to add 5G connectivity throughout New York City’s 418-mile network of underground subway tunnels, which are dead zones for cell service.

MTA officials plan to finish the rollout by 2032. The network will be installed through a $600 million deal with a company called Boldyn Networks, which is installing the system at no cost to the MTA. Boldyn says it's partnered with major cell carriers like Verizon and AT&T.

Here is the current plan in Seattle for new light rail lines, extensions of current lines, and a reconfiguration of current routes on the built-out network:

Maybe you know more about it than I do, but Seattle should expand the monorail to make it a legit transit line instead of an amusement ride.

King County Metro (Seattle) will open RapidRide G, a.k.a. Madison BRT, this weekend. This route is a $133 million investment and features center stations and bus-only lanes through Downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill, switching to normal curb-running service as it gets further away from downtown. That means the route is also using custom buses that have doors on both sides for both types of stops. Riders will be able to transfer from this route to Line 1 light rail service, the First Hill Streetcar, and to Coleman Dock ferries.

There have been many proposals to expand the monorail into a regional transit system but they all failed at the ballot. With the construction of Link Light Rail it's not really necessary to expand the monorail -- a subway station will be built under Seattle Center as part of the Ballard light rail extension. They did recently change the monorail to accept payment from the ORCA transit card so people can easily use it as a link in their transit journey (free transfers from another mode such as bus or light rail).

Actually thinking about it, Seattle should've made expansion plans for the monorail when it was first built so they would get a Skytrain-like system before Vancouver did and be further ahead in transit today instead of having to build a costly light rail system from scratch.

The Seattle Monorail was really built for one specific purpose, which was to get visitors to the 1962 World Fair between Downtown Seattle (where the hotels were) to the fairgrounds, now called Seattle Center. It was not intended to be a true transit system that would be used by locals regularly, and probably wasn't even intended to be permanent when originally conceived. So I understand why so many different groups in Seattle tried for decades for extend the system into something bigger, but that definitely was an inferior option to building a true high capacity rail network throughout the region.

SEPTA's Regional Rail is the best commuter rail system in the country by a light year. I've never seen crowds that size in other US systems during off-peak hours.

Agreed - I go to Philly twice a year for work, and our HQ is on the Main Line - I'm always shocked

NY subway gets a lot more funding than Philly, yet the former is stuck with old clunkers while the latter gets the best and most futuristic trains the US has ever seen.

Edit: I think @mrnyc is secretly jealous of Philly and wishes he could live here. Cleveland wishes it could be even 0.01% as good as Philly. 😂😉

NYC has 665 miles of subway, versus 78 miles for Philly.  Sounds like Philly is jealous of length.
