I'm curious how people get to become mods here on UO.  I've been around since basically the beginning (September '04 first post), and have never been suspended, reprimanded or anything, yet I have never been asked about being a mod.  At the same time, I have seen forumers come in and rise to the rank of Mod in a much shorter time, and with less posting.  Of course I'm not referring to Mayday, ColDay, RichNCincy, etc.  But MelanieXU, Living in Gin, and some others have become mods even though they came around much later.  It's kind of hard to take authority from someone like this (akin to a new guy at work getting promoted over you, and then telling you what to do).  What is the process for becoming a mod?

*Note* I have absolutely no problem with Living in Gin or MelanieXU, I was just using them as examples.

It's because you haven't earned your strips man.

In order to be taken serious around here you need to have been suspended at least once!  :police:

Besides you dont need to be a MOD here to have some authority!

Basically what it comes down to is "who would take time out of their schedule to moderate this vast forum?"  There are countless responsible forumers who I could've made a moderator such as yourself (edale) but then we'd have too many cooks in the regional kitchen.  We try to make it proportional to the population of the state by region and have a diverse set of opinions (conservative/liberal, male/female, majority/minority, etc).  And when the time comes and we add another 1000 or so forumers, you just might be that moderator.

And even though MTS is a psychopath, he is correct in saying:

MTS, edale, jmeck, Sherman, RnR, mrnyc, etc who are established forumers might as well be mods as you guys send us the PM's/report posts to get potential trolls out of here.  And trust me when I say, we do value folks who have been on here for years' opinions moreso than newer folks because you know how these things always go.  If anything, take it as an honor you've never been suspended/banned!  *cough* MTS *cough*

Word.  I appreciate the response!

edale.... I moderated another board and, trust me, it is more of a burden than a privilege/honor.

MTS, edale, jmeck, Sherman, RnR, mrnyc, etc who are established forumers

OK.... I am insulted.... because I am either "etc" or am not "established"

I shall now refer to the Admins as "Mayday, richNcincy, etc."

It means you're over-qualified and, consequently, can't be taken seriously

So that's my problem! I've never been suspended!

I'm too tired right now, but I'll get started on that tomorrow. :whip:

Never been suspended either... I also haven't been posting as much as I used to...  Gotta get crackin' on that. ;-)

Anything for the greater good of the forum! :) LOL

I can't believe I've never been considered!

My campaign is a disaster, Moe. I hate the public so much. If only they'd elect me, I'd make them pay!

You know, I used to be a moderator in a harry potter forum...i ran it into the ground. oops

Thread cleaners get no love :(

Speaking of which...START CLEANING!!!

Yessuh massa I's gonna get right on it!  :-P

I'm not busy this weekend. Remind me if I forget. I know I've been slacking. I keep forgetting about that subforum.

Being Zsa Zsa just not doing it for you anymore?

Zsa Zsa is too nice for me.

The Grid, that used to be on W. 9th moved over to St. Clair, near the 1500 block, across from the Crazy horse.  It abruptly closed last year, don't know if it reopened.

W. 25th has bounce, from the same people in Columbus who brought them Union Station.  There are a few smaller, lets say, niche, gay bars in that general area.

Twist is in Lakewood, at 117th

<putting my moderator hat back on> we can discuss this further in a number of threads or you can start another one if you like

You get a hat??  :wtf:  :wtf:

I was unaware you got a fashion item for being a mod?

Who is it by?  Hermes?  Ungaro?  Something MayDay threw together on his sewing machine?

Just a question about global moderators. You said you like to make it proportional. I was was wondering about why out of the 16 Global Moderators there are

4 in Columbus

7 in Cincinnati

4 in Cleveland

1 in Illinois

That doesn't seem proportional to me. Maybe things got messed up when the forum grew but maybe it should be fixed now?

Mods:

Cincinnati - 8 - 3 non-active (UncleRando, CincyImages, and buildingcincinnati) = 5

Cleveland - 5

Columbus - 4

Dayton - 1

Norwalk - 1

That's about right, no?

Since 3 are inactive it makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying

Anyone know why they are inactive? Too busy? Bored with the place? Political ambitions better served by a lower online profile?

UncleRando was last spotted in Greece!  ROFLMAO!!

All three for various reasons.  UncleRando is in Korea; CincyImages is in Korea; buildingcincinnati is in Colerain.  All foreign places.

Speaking of inactive members, does anybody know where KOOW has been?

I know, the pope (inactive Cleveland mod), Kstay2 and JamieC.  I miss the old crazy people!

I asked about the pope one time.  He moved to Chicago and abandoned this site.  I think Kstay2 moved to DC, but I see he's still active (although not posting).  He just signed in yesterday.  Jaimec moved to DC, and apparently gave up on visiting UrbanOhio as well.  KOOW's disappearance baffles me, though, because he just stopped posting and visiting the site after being very active.

Doesn't he have a kid?

I cant imagine ever leaving lol

Nope you missed Mr. Fort Wayne of 1955!

Rob is a deity.

Plus, he's not in Ohio.

I only mentioned Mods proportional with Ohio.  Rob transcends that.  Rob is Rob.

A very minor deity, though. I tend not to flaunt my powers because they're so trifling compared with those of the exalted, revered, and feared MayDay.

Speaking of inactive members, does anybody know where KOOW has been?

I miss him. I wish he would come back. I guess I'm a masochist. Hope he's okay.

Ohhh, stop! ;)

A minor suggestion.  If a moderator is going back and forth with a member on a topic, any decision to sanction the member (i.e., deleting a post) should not be made by that specific moderator.  Moderators are human afterall.  Just a suggestion.  Thanks.

So are you. And you made a mistake in how you worded your post. That's why it is was deleted. It wasn't personal.

BTW, that happened a day or two ago. That must have really bothered you to still be thinking about it today. Sorry it bothered you. But it's not about you or I.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Never said I wasn't.  I simply posted here (let me know if this is not the proper thread) to make the suggestion that YOU should not have been the one to make that decision.  You could have easily referred it to another moderator to make sure that your own emotions did not get in the way.  I personally didn't see anything wrong in the way I "worded" my post.  It was largely reflective of your own post and attitude.  JMO.  And I would let someone else respond, if necessary.

And, for the record, I didn't call you out by name.  Out of all the forumers who have accussed you of abusing your moderator powers, I have never been one of them.  I was simply suggesting a change in forum policy which, as a long-time contributor, I think would be a good idea.  Don't take it personally.

My emotions don't get in the way. Nothing here matters to me emotionally.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Fine.  But you deleted my post on your subjective judgment that it was rude and condenscending to you.... exactly the attitude you were displaying towards me and exactly the attitude others have accused you of having towards them.  Us two usually get along just fine, so I was surprised to see that you had deleted a rather tame post IMO
