December 9, 201014 yr It's not a debate, MTS, if nobody else cares. Or more better yet, you're not actually superior if you have to argue for it. i.e., I know I'm superior, but I'm not going to engage in a debate about it because I don't really give a f^ck what you think - you're not relevant. Joking (sort of ) aside, the East Side/West Side issue is still noticable...at least to my wife who is not from Cleveland...she picked up on it. But it is diminishing as fewer people live in actual territory that is considered East/West and move to the suburbs (i.e., Mayfield Heights v Westlake doesn't count).
December 9, 201014 yr What were we talking about again? Like somebody pointed out above only people above 40 care about the E-W rivalary. I'll joke about it but I am not really being serious. Avogardo, how long did it take you to get home yesterday?
December 9, 201014 yr I think the main thing is that most people hardly ever if never, travel to the other side of town. They know and are comfortable with their side.

December 9, 201014 yr ^ It took me 20 minutes, but I heard that folks who left later than I did (and who were parked in the interior of downtown) took an hour to get to Tremont, mainly due to trying to get out of the CBD.

Granted neither have anything interesting going for them! LOL Their is a small rivalry between the two even though almost nobody from either city knows someone in the other. I think its basically just the name. I am originally from Eastlake and remember people making little jokes about the rivalry, nothing serious though. And anybody remember this? http://blog.cleveland.com/pdopinion/2007/09/myhometown.jpg

Stupid weather men - I totally would've taken the rapid if this would've been in the forecast.
December 9, 201014 yr you guys prob know this but maybe some dont? the e-w rivalry thing goes back to the founding of the city and the ohio city vs cleveland battling and fussing around back then. ever since its been an ingrained part of cleveland history and it isnt going away, silly as it is. lots of older cities have something like that, even if its just 'the other side of the tracks.' actually i think the cinci locals and their 'what high school did you go to?' nonsense is worse and i think they even have a bit of an e-w thing too.

The Chicago Bulls stayed like 2 blocks away from the Q and it took them 30 minutes to get there Why didn't they just get out of the bus and walk? I could've totally walked from UC to downtown faster than the 4 hours it took me to drive, but that would've meant abandoning my car, which I was not about to do! But the Bulls had a driver!
December 9, 201014 yr Yes... the whole east side vs. west side rivalry has significantly died down. But it is still fun to joke about. How come it is the West siders that always get their panties in a bunch? And since we are on the subject of rivalries that can't be let go - shuck faker! ^ It took me 20 minutes, but I heard that folks who left later than I did (and who were parked in the interior of downtown) took an hour to get to Tremont, mainly due to trying to get out of the CBD. December 9, 201014 yr I think the HS question serves as a quick way to get to know what parts of the city someone might be familiar with. Cities are very different places, phenomenologically, depending on where you hang out. I guess you could ask what bars someone (used to) likes to go to, or restaurants or something, but HS cuts to the chase pretty quickly -- provided it is known the person being asked actually grew up in the city. I don't really see anything wrong with it, it's akin to asking "what neighborhood are you from?", but it is more likely to have a determinate answer since people move around.

Not necessarily the case in St. Louis as it is the private Catholic school capital of the country......

December 9, 201014 yr What the deal with the lack of people from Columbus? Chris is still using the ColumbusUnderground excuse. ColDay and MayDay banned most of them!
December 10, 201014 yr Now i'm not saying this is how it is, but this is my skewed view of both sides of town: From my far far east locale i see Cleveland's far western suburbs as newer money, trying too hard to keep up w/the jones', etc. I see the older west side suburbanites as working class. I also picture them as being more eastern European (poles, slovaks, some germans, more orthodox christians, etc) they're into polka, bowling, high socks, and yard flamingos. hehe! BTW, my grandma grew up on W. 43. Two of my great aunts and a great uncle lived in Old Brooklyn. I see the eastern suburbs a little differently: old money, more trees and hills, more snow. The people on the east side seem to be more western european(english, irish, etc), there also seems to be a more educated class there. I believe the east side has a high jewish population, there seems to be a decent number of asians. Last but not least the east side is where many of my friends and neighbors work everyday, i drive past/thru the eastern suburbs to go downtown for a browns/indians game, to concerts, etc. It's funny, even Warren has an east vs. west divide (the Mahoning River runs between the two). The east side is where the Trumbull Country Club is, Dr's and professionals lived there. The west side was more working class mill hunkies. Then you have the Warren Harding Panthers vs Warren Western Reserve Raiders rivalry. Once the two high schools were consolidated into one and Warren Harding became the Raiders they pissed off all the eastsiders! There are actually some older people in Warren that still won't go to a football game because they kept the west side mascot, which had only been around since 1967 (Harding was the original high school).
December 10, 201014 yr Well, if it makes you feel any better my mom (Warren westsider) always tells my dad (an eastsider), "west side's the best side, east side's the least side". It's something they used to say in school back in the day. :) Also, to give you some prospective, my mom's dad worked at a steel mill (Thomas Steel), they only had one car and my grandmother stayed home. They had a lot with two houses and always rented the other one out to help make ends meet. My dads parents both worked, Grandpa was a skilled trades guy (millwright) at Packard Electric/GM/Delphi and my grandmother was a nurses trainer/head nurse at Trumbull Memorial. They always had two cars and got a new one every couple of years. All my grandparents were born in the late teens early 20s and were pretty poor growing up. Both grandfathers dropped out of high school to help support their families. Both grandmothers were pretty well educated. Dad's parents were first generation, mom's trace back to the revolution. :)

Not necessarily the case in St. Louis as it is the private Catholic school capital of the country...... Cincinnati is also really big into the Catholic/Private highschool thing. I don't mind the question, and when I meet someone from Cincinnati, it's usually one of the first questions I ask. It gives you a lot of information in one question. You can find out if someone is an east sider or west sider, general level of affluance (hate phrasing it that way, but I can't think of another way to put it), and an idea of the general type of childhood someone had, not to mention the possibility of knowing the same people. When someone says they went to Colerain or Elder, I would naturally just assume we don't know the same people, and probably did not hang out in similar places. If someone says they went to Sycamore or Seven Hills, chances are we have much more in common.
December 10, 201014 yr Why is it, in all Ohio towns, the west side seems to be the blue collar side? I'd say Akron is a notable exception. West Akron and the area around it is absolutely gorgeous. December 10, 201014 yr Why is it, in all Ohio towns, the west side seems to be the blue collar side? I was thinking about this after it was posted, I think it just happens to be a coincidence in Ohio cities. I think the real driver is the wealthy tended to move up hill to escape the pollution during the industrial age, which was usually centered around to river valleys. Examples being West Akron, Northside of Youngstown, The various Heights on the east side of Cleveland. I'd say Akron is a notable exception. West Akron and the area around it is absolutely gorgeous. December 10, 201014 yr West Akron is gorgeous, with Northwest Akron being even better. Akron's wealthiest suburbs are northwest of the city, too: Fairlawn, "Montrose" (in quotes for being an unincorporated area that everyone around here seems to know anyway), Bath Township. Columbus' wealthiest suburbs are northwest of the city, too: Upper Arlington, Dublin, Powell. Bexley and New Albany admittedly add some wealth on the east side, but they don't spill into the nearby parts of Columbus proper, save right by Easton. Northwest Columbus seems to have a lot more nice neighborhoods that are in places barely distinguishable from the tony suburbs they border. Canton's wealthiest suburb (Jackson Township) is northwest of the city as well. My favorite metro neighborhood in Canton itself, Ridgewood, is just north of downtown, just south of Malone College.

It's changed since and I wouldn't consider living there in the future, but I remember it fondly...and still go to Solon football games on occasion ;)
