Whiskey Island, other prime shoreline property will become part of Cleveland Metroparks

After more than a decade as a stepchild, Whiskey Island is becoming part of the Cleveland Metroparks, the regional park system.

 

At a Monday, May 5, news conference at Wendy Park, which is part of the 60 acres along Lake Erie on the western side of the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Metroparks officials announced plans to transfer for $1 the prime shoreline property — and several other small parcels of greenspace — to the Metroparks by the end of the year.

 

Brian Zimmerman, Metroparks CEO, said the park system will invest $6.25 million to upgrade Whiskey Island and link it to the other properties. Those properties are along the east and west banks of the Flats and Heritage Park further down the Cuyahoga River.

 

“It didn’t make sense for us to continue to be the caretaker for this very important piece of lakefront property” when that is what the Metroparks system routinely does, FitzGerald said.
