I wish Woody Hayes was coach when I was there, we had Earl - I got fired before the Michigan game - Bruce.

You think that's bad?  Try going to school there when the coach was John - I can't beat Michigan - Cooper.

I was there.  He came in my senior year.  I think the bucks won one or two games that year.  That year is one of the reasons I have mentally blocked out my four years at Ohio State and Columbus.  I'm like Jean Grey...those memories were sent to the deepest portion of my mind.

I feel your pain.  I had to look this up, but it wasn't quite as bad as you remember.  Cooper's first year was 1987 and the Bucks went 4-6-1.  This was also the last losing season for OSU.  Things got better for the Buckeyes after that year.  But one consistent problem of Cooper's teams was the inability to beat Michigan and the inability to win their bowl game.  Incredibly, OSU was 2-10-1 vs. Michigan and 3-8 in bowl games during Cooper's 13 years as head coach.

It's a shame Cooper couldn't do better on those last two games every year because he was (and still is) a genuinely nice guy.  And I say still is because Cooper still lives in Columbus and is still semi-active in the community.  But his inability to beat Michigan doomed his tenure and made most Buckeye fans very happy that Jim Tressel was hired to replace him.

Much thanks from the Buckeye Nation, C-Dawg.  It was impressive for OSU to defeat Navy in their first game of the season.  A solid Navy team that returned their core players from an 8-win bowl appearance season.  Certainly not as impressive as facing a stellar San Jose St. team in your first game like USC did.  A San Jose St. team that finished 6-6 and in the bottom half of the WAC.  But you can only play the team that's on the field.  Looking forward to tonight's game.

Well this game is much better than I expected it to be. Our D is the only thing keeping us in the game. The offense went on vacation lol

Edit: So 9/12 is the day I decided to no longer waste my time watching Buckeye football.

O state has all that talent but they can't beat a true freshmen in his first true road test?

USC 18 | OSU 15

Another heartbreaker loss against a major league team.  After playing solid the entire game, the OSU defense can't hold USC for one final game winning drive.  Tough early season loss for the Buckeyes.  :-(

Agreed.  but better a loss now, than later in the season.

I agree Tressel is way too conservative and sometimes predictable.

Well I enjoyed the game up until the end.  How big did that USC field goal before the half turn out to be....

I agree about Tressel playing it a bit too safe, but that can be a fine line between smart football and disaster.  Pete carroll was a bit more exciting the way he rolled the dice a few times.

I haven't checked yet, but i'm thinking this loss won't hurt the Buckeyes ranking too bad?

I just checked, they moved from 8th to 11th so that's not too awful.

O state has all that talent but they can't beat a true freshmen in his first true road test?

I take that as sarcasm meant to imply a lack of talent on OSU's part.  Not true.  OSU nearly beat a team with the best O-line in the country, the best group of WRs in the country and the best stable of running backs in the country.  Sure, they start a freshman QB, but he sure ain't that bad and you couldn't ask for a better situation to throw him into with that supporting cast.

OSU, on the other hand, only has one O-lineman returning in the same spot he started the beginning of last season, not to mention having to replace one of the best RBs in the country and its top two wideouts, top two LBs and both starting CBs.

Fact is, as much as I try to defend him, this loss was on Tressel.  I saw Barkley run the QB sneak on 3rd or 4th and short at least 4-5 times.  He got the first down every time.  We were in those situations on numerous occassion and despite having a 6'6 240 lb QB, Tressel never ran the sneak once.  Instead, he continued to hand the ball off to our 5'10 190 lb RB.

Our preparation for and execution of the two-minute drill was downright embarrassing.  While USC had the ball inside our 10, JT waited too long (20 seconds after play ended) to call a timeout and preserve us with some clock to work with.  During the game, while Carrol called a timeout from the sideline (new rule) to prevent a delay of game against his QB, JT did not do the same.

Finally, and this one I have not heard much about, USC's first touchdown should have been reviewed.  Watch the replay.  It was 4th and goal and Staffon Johnson's knee hits the ground as one of our defenders is trying to rip the ball out.  The ball was actually behind Johnson's body because of the strip effort.  I am not saying he wasn't in for sure.  I just thought it should have been reviewed.

Oh yeah.... did anyone notice John Simon (#53) in there at DT in the second half.  This kid is a true freshman from Youngstown Cardinal Mooney and USC could not block him.  He was routinely getting into the backfield.  Mark my words, this kid is a stud and will be a star at OSU.

Overall pretty boring game, a fizzle. I expected better from both teams, especially USC. I don't care they had a freshman quarterback and this was his first big road test, USC couldn't get their sh!t together until the last minute.

Hell, if I want excitement, I'm going to start watching more MAC games! Central Michigan-Michigan State, Toledo-Colorado, and Bowling Green-Missouri were all way more entertaining than Ohio State-USC. I know it's been said before, but yeah, the Big Ten is getting a little soft and more disturbingly, boring. Tresel is too damn conservative. It's just not as entertaining of a product as many other teams are putting out. I'm sure being in that monstrosity of a stadium is exciting, but on TV, it doesn't look too good...

Then again, seeing over 100,000 OSU fans fall slient...priceless.

Actually, I put alot on the fact that it was Barkley's second college game, first on the road, in a huge stadium.  If you played that game in week 10 in a nuetral stadium, or in Southern Cal, OSU loses by at least 21.  Honestly, all the excitement on OSU getting Pryor is really starting to fizzle.

The game is officially a home game for Toledo

How is this a home game for Toledo?! Last I checked, Cleveland is pretty heavy OSU territory, probably second in the state to Columbus in terms of total OSU fans. I think they need to reverse that home team status...

To call this a home game for Toledo is ridiculous. Playing in Detroit or Ann Arbor would be more of a home game for Toledo than playing in Cleveland. Cleveland is hostile, scarlet-red Ohio State territory.

this is nothing new, in the past notre dame held a few home games at the old municipal stadium too. in fact more ne ohioans may attend notre dame/aspire to attend nd than osu, or it's a fairly close call. whatever, somebody has to be the home team, in the case of this big in-state game they probably just flipped a quarter.

It's all just contractual.  OSU probably went to Toledo to fill a slot on their schedule.  Toledo with probably wanted to do a "home and home" with OSU because they realized OSU had very little other non-conference scheduling options for those couple years.  So, OSU agrees to the terms, however the "home" game for Toledo will be held in Cleveland.

This is a pretty common thing to do.  Obviously OSU doesn't want to play in the Glass Bowl so they simply negotiate a neutral field.  I mean, honestly... how often do you see a big 10 team playing at a MAC stadium?  Especially if it's OSU, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, etc...

For OSU to schedule another Ohio team is a favor to those Ohio teams (with the exception in recent years of UC).  As a business agreement, both OSU and the other Ohio team financially win big time.  The other Ohio team voluntarily gives up one of their home games in favor of playing at a sold-out Ohio Stadium.  OSU gets an extra home game in front of 105,000 paying customers.  The other Ohio team gets a seven figure paycheck for entering into this agreement.  In recent years Kent State, Ohio University, Toledo and Youngstown State have all benefited financially from this agreement.

It wasn't so long ago that OSU did not schedule other Ohio teams.  During the Cooper era, OSU rarely played other Ohio colleges and the other Ohio colleges complained loudly.  That changed when former Youngstown State coach Jim Tressel became head coach.  He saw a benefit of regularly playing other Ohio colleges.  This agreement to schedule a Toledo home game in Cleveland Browns Stadium is simply a variation on this theme.  And it sounds like its a very profitable variation for Toledo given the reports of a $4 million payday for them.

This is a probably a much much much larger payday than Toledo could possibly reap with a home game sellout against OSU.  Playing in Cleveland also likely benefits OSU from an expanding fan base/Cleveland OSU alumni perspective.  It probably helps with OSU's Cleveland area recruiting too.  Plus, its just kinda fun to see OSU play football in Browns Stadium.  And if that fun helps Toledo balance its athletic department budget, what is so wrong with that?

You're saying that home and neutral/road swing creates +24 points (or more) for USC. That's crazy. USC didn't even cover the spread. Even the coaches and reporters aren't thinking along those lines. They actually gave OSU respect by being the highest ranked 1-loss team at #11 and keeping the door open for a major BCS bid if they run the rest of the table. Unlike, say, the other OSU.

Neat photo!

Great game by the defense - didn't expect OSU to shut down Toledo's potent offense like this.

OK game by the offense.  Despite the 38 points, Pryor had a very inconsistent game.  At times he looks like world class athletic player.  And at times he looks really confused out there.

Sounds like we just found our next QB for the Browns!

Let's let him get two more years under his belt as a Buckeye...I think he's going to do great things for them.

actually its more of a favor to osu. they are going to get a big enthusiastic crowd when they play other ohio college teams home or away and they can chalk up an easy win.

and for sure having the occasional game in cle or cin is just plain old good politics. gotta keep them ohio blue chips from slipping off to notre dame, mich or penn st, etc.

Actually its not more of a favor to OSU to play another Ohio team.  Its more of a risk to play another Ohio team in OSU's pre-Big Ten schedule.  Here's why:

- Ohio State could work this "home games only" agreement with any number of smaller colleges that are looking for big paycheck and some national exposure.  They've done it with Marshall in 2004, Northern Illinois in 2006 and Troy(GA) in 2008.  Any perennial college powerhouse that sells out a huge home stadium routinely works these same deals.  See Florida, USC, Texas, LSU, Alabama, Penn State, Michigan, etc.  In fact, the MAC schools of Central, Eastern and Western Michigan would be likely candidates for this agreement, if they didn't already have this agreement with Michigan and Michigan State.

- Ohio State faces more of a risk to play a smaller Ohio college than a smaller non-Ohio college based on recruiting.  OSU gets many of its players from Ohio.  But there are many more high-quality recruits that get passed over by OSU.  Most of those high-quality recruits end up at another Ohio college team.  Don't you think that passed over recruit would like to prove OSU should have taken him?  Don't you think it would make that Ohio team's year to beat OSU?

So although this home only agreement mutually benefits OSU and the other Ohio schools, OSU is still risking plenty.  If you still think this in-state scheduling is without significant risk for the bigger school, ask Michigan State how they feel about losing to Central Michigan this year!

Also, after checking past OSU schedules, I found that OSU has scheduled at least one Ohio team every year since 1997.  With all games played in Ohio Stadium except for the 2002 UC vs. OSU game, which was played in Paul Brown Stadium, and of course this year's Toledo game played at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

- Akron: 2001, 2007

- Bowling Green: 1992, 1997, 2003, 2006

- Cincinnati: 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006

- Kent State: 2002, 2007

- Miami: 2000, 2005

- Ohio: 1999, 2008

- Toledo: 1998, 2009

- Youngstown State: 2007, 2008

In fact, the MAC schools of Central, Eastern and Western Michigan would be likely candidates for this agreement, if they didn't already have this agreement with Michigan and Michigan State.

Michigan State recently announced that they would play 4 games with each of those schools between now and 2020 i think...each four game series will be broken up as 3 home games for MSU and one away game.  Recently Western Michigan has been playing one game a year in Ford Field in Detroit, so they may move that WMU/MSU game over there.

UofM has no such agreement.  They do schedule Eastern Michigan (the weakest of the three) quite often.  Not sure if that's a formal agreement or not.

OSU 30 | ILLINOIS 0

The Buckeyes great defense and solid ground game grind down the Illini on a soggy Saturday in Columbus.

The defense has really been stepping up, it's Pryor I'm concerned about.  Give the ball to Saine and Boom all day, just don't let Terrelle throw, for crying out loud.  Or at least make sure his feet are set in concrete before he throws.

This might be the first 30-0 game I ever worried about.

Even with a great defense OSU will have to improve on offense (mainly pryor) to beat the upper echelon teams like Florida, Alabama, and Texas.  Until then they are definitely the best in the B10, but not a national championship team.  If he does improve, which I think he will, this could be a very interesting next couple of years for the bucks.

OSU 33 | INDIANA 14

Ohio State's defense limits a quality Indiana offense to 7 points thru the entire game until giving up a TD on the final play.  Pryor has three passing TD's in the first half and one rushing TD in the second half.  Pryor's still not a great pocket passer.  But he had a strong game on rollouts, designed runs and broken play runs.  Looked more poised in his decision making.

OSU 31 | WISC 13

The Buckeyes turn the old saying on its ear by proving that the best offense is a good defense.  Two INT's returned for TD's and a kickoff return for a TD power the victory.

One fan's "bogus result" is another fan's "gritty win".  Opinions will vary.  But to answer your question:

Is it me, or is Ohio State's offense actually getting worse?

No, you're not the only one to notice!  If the offense doesn't start showing signs of life, it will be Code Scarlet for the Buckeye Nation.

The offense does need to improve, no doubt at all.  But sometimes a potent offense can be over-rated.  Just look at Saturday's big game between Florida and LSU.  Neither team was an offensive powerhouse.

Bucks won 2 out 3 phases of the game.  They know what they're doing.  Half the Offense was out all week w/the flu.

Interesting stats in this article.

Buckeyes' big win a bogus result

PURDUE 26 | OSU 18

Purdue upsets the 7th ranked Buckeyes in West Lafayette.  Purdue plays well but Ohio State's 5 turnovers lead to the upset.  Four of the turnovers are from directly from Terrelle Pryor (2 fumbles and 2 INT's).  Pryor ran for one TD and threw one TD in the fourth quarter to lead a comback rally after falling behind 23-7.  But Purdue stops OSU on a late fourth down conversion to preserve the lead.

Man doesn't that stink. I think this upset pretty much knocks them out of a national title game.

If they win out in their big ten games, they will go to the rose bowl though

OSU 38 | MINNESOTA 7

Ohio State rebounds from last week's upset.  Pryor is less bad in this game.  Even good at times.

On a football related note, the Buckeyes are favored by 44 points over New Mexico State.  Anyone want to take the Aggies and the 44 points?

If you took the New Mexico State Aggies and the 44 point spread - you lost!  Bucks win 45-0.

what was the over/under for the PSU game?  40 pts?

^ Yes.  That was the best I've seen the bucks play in 2 seasons.  Domination on both sides of the ball.  With much of the starters coming back I think they're going to have a 2 year run at the national championship.

will the Bucks get recognition? or will the press see this as proof that the big ten is weak.

But seriously.  That was the most complete game I've seen the Buckeyes play in the past two years.  Defensively dominant as usual.  But offensively competent as well.  Pryor looked good, they moved the ball down the field both running and passing - and most importantly - zero turnovers.

OUCH !!!

The sports media party for Ohio State is over. They've been lumped with the whole lot of 'em in the Big Ten. Ohio State has to earn everything they get now, and the AP has not shown them much mercy this season (hell, if anything, they've been biased for Penn State).

So scary!!

The media loves OSU, Texas, Florida, USC, and Notre Dame. All the historically big football schools with large fan bases are favorites for the media because they draw the biggest ratings.  What do you think would get more viewers, a Boise State/TCU national title game, or an OSU/USC national title?

Of course CDN will have a rebuttal.  What does he know about magazines, papers and TV media in regards to sports.
