Heh.  We've known that since the preseason.  But you're definitely not kidding.

Great to see the Buckeyes offense returning to form against Indiana.  Very dominant first half (31-0) before taking the second half off to finish 38-10.

The polls will come out later today.  But look for Ohio State to be #1 going into the big road game at Madison.

Ohio State moves up with Alabama loss

Updated: October 10, 2010, 4:55 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Hit the reset button on the college football season.  There's a new No. 1 team in Ohio State and uncertainty at the top of the rankings for the first time all season, after Alabama's 19-game winning streak ended at South Carolina.

The Southeastern Conference, which has won the last four national championships, has some catching up to do in the 2010 title chase.  The Buckeyes and No. 2 Oregon have a couple of BCS busters in No. 3 Boise State and No. 4 TCU on their tails.  And for the first time in about a decade, Nebraska is a legitimate national championship contender.

Ohio State received 34 first-place votes and Oregon (15), Boise State (eight), TCU (one) and No. 6 Oklahoma (two) also got first-place votes from the media panel Sunday.  The last time Ohio State was No. 1 was the final regular-season poll of 2007.

Heh.  This year is the last year it will even be physically possible for OSU and Nebraska to play for the title ... of course, there's a lot of football to be played between now and then, and three teams between Nebraska and #2 (not to mention no easy road of it for us).

Realistically, though, if you look at the remaining schedules of the top five teams, Nebraska, Boise State, and TCU *all* have a decent shot at running the table, though Nebraska would have the Big 12 title game to deal with.  OSU and Oregon still probably have the hardest remaining schedules of those five.

^ good summary -- also, not only did sc beat bama, they whupped'em real good. well, maybe not exactly, but it felt that way watching and they did out-muscled'm on the ground anyway. that should help osu in case of alabama hanging in there in the polls.

Ouch, this is ugly. Looks like Wisconsin is about to pull off the upset.

1st place must've been nice for the week it lasted.

Yeah, that sucked.  No perfect record this year.  No national championship this year.  It really looked like the schedule was gonna set up just right for the Buckeyes.  But you can't spot a good team 21 points at home and hope to win.

OSU pounds Purdue 49-0.

Why can't we play mediorce opponents at home every week???  :-P

^ I was thinking along those lines too.  And that it kind of devalue's throttling Purdue when you let Wisconsin run all over you the week before.

^ why? wisky ALWAYS plays tOSU tight.  esp. @ camp R.

+1.

Everyone following OSU with a lick of sense had Wisconsin circled on the calendar as a dangerous game since before the confetti stopped flying at the Rose Bowl.

Last I saw bucks were -25.  Iowa/Mich St game should be a good one.  Im surprised they have Mich st as almost a 7pt dog.

They are at Iowa, which is a tough place to play.  And their big wins this year have been at home for the most part (Wiscy, which always plays better at home than on the road and ND who has now been shown to be a terrible team), their only quality road win is Michigan and I think we can honestly say that they are not that great of a team.

^no surprise they are the dog......I was thinking more like 3 or 3.5 though.

Ohio State dominates Minnesota 52-10.

This combined with Michigan State's road loss at Iowa put OSU in a four way tie for the Big Ten lead with MSU, Iowa and Wisconsin.

So:

OSU lost to Wisconsin.

Wisconsin lost to MSU.

MSU lost to Iowa.

Iowa lost to Wisconsin.

OSU and MSU do not meet.

OSU and Iowa play in two weeks.  That will be the last meeting between the four teams currently tied for the conference lead.

Does anyone control their own destiny at this point?

  • 2 weeks later...

Not much news for the football Buckeyes with last week being a bye week.  It comes at a good time for them though.  They can prepare for their toughest stretch of games (home game against Penn State - road game at Iowa - home game against Michigan) to finish out the Big Ten schedule.

The basketball Buckeyes did have some news last week.  They started their 2010-2011 schedule with a 102-56 exhibition game victory against Walsh yesterday.  Super-freshman Jared Sullinger led the team with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Earlier in the week, the Bucks were #4 in the AP pre-season poll.

Penn State puts the Buckeyes on upset alert with a 14-3 halftime lead.  Then Ohio State reels off 35 unanswered points (including two Pick-6's and one Deflect-6) to win 38-14.

That "Deflect-6" was the best heads-up play I've seen any OSU player make this year.  That one will go on the highlight reel for the whole season for sure.

Ohio State avoids an upset at Iowa with a come-from-behind 20-17 win.  This keeps the Buckeyes in a three-way tie atop the Big Ten with Wisconsin and Michigan State.  A win next Saturday against Michigan would give the Buckeyes a share of the Big Ten title for the sixth straight year.

Who thinks RichRod keeps his job after OSU throttles em in the Horseshoe next week?  I think chances are 50/50 but he needs to keep it close against OSU or he's probably gone.  I know they have a young defense, but he hasn't won a meaningful Big 10 game in 3 years.

I do wonder if an embarrassing loss in the Shoe would lead to RichRod's firing.  His terrible record against Ohio State and poor performance in the Big Ten would give Michigan ample justification.  And I think the AD that hired RichRod is no longer there - so that's not a good sign.  But I'd bet that RichRod gets one more year.

RichRod's best argument for staying is that he needed to recruit "his players" to run "his offense".  And the emergence of Denard Robinson has put a jolt into their previously weak offense from his first two years.  But the UM/RichRod defense has been mindnumbingly awful this year.  So bad, that it almost doesn't matter how good their offense is.  If UM just had an average defense, they might be 9-2 instead of 7-4.

I used to dislike RichRod for the way he bailed on WV and his arrogant attitude.  Now I kind of feel sorry for him.  At this point I'd like UM to give RichRod one more year - just to see what happens!

That team up North comes in as 17-point underdog for tomorrow's game.  Ohio State will be wearing those Nike Pro Combat Uniforms for the second straight year in "The Game".  This time the alternate uni's will be honoring the 1942 National Championship team coached by Paul Brown.

More about this from The Dispatch:

OSU football: 1942 team well worth honoring

Coach Jim Tressel loves it when the Ohio State present can meet the team's past in harmony, something he believes was captured well by the uniforms the Buckeyes will wear Saturday against Michigan, honoring the 1942 OSU national championship team.

The Buckeyes, with the support of Nike, will take the field against Michigan for the second straight year in uniforms paying homage to a great team of the past.  Last year the '54 national title team was honored, though the rather abstract uniforms left many old-time fans scratching their heads.

This time, they stuck strictly to the '42 scheme - all-scarlet helmets, jerseys with the rounded numbers of the day, all-gray pants and gray leggings - with one exception: The helmets carry a decal on the back depicting the Bronze Star that '42 team member Chuck Csuri won in the Battle of the Bulge two years later.

MORE: http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2010/11/26/1942-team-well-worth-honoring.html?sid=101

The Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines and the refs 37-7.

One bogus holding call that negated a brilliant 97-yard TD run by Boom Herron and two unsportmanlike penalties for flashing the "O" in the gloved hands of the special uniforms after two touchdowns.  If they didn't want the Bucks to show off the "O", then why was it part of the uni?

Anyway, another great win.  Let the RichRod employment watch begin.

The three-way tie at the top of the Big Ten before Saturday remained a three-way tie after Saturday.  Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State all won and all finished with 7-1 conference / 11-1 overall records.

Because this is the Big Ten's last year before having a conference championship game, the Big Ten's representative for the Rose Bowl will be the team with the highest BCS ranking at the end of the overall regular season.  The Big Ten team with the second highest BCS ranking will go to a BCS bowl game.

The final BCS regular season ranking isn't until next week, but this week's rankings have Wisconsin #5, Ohio State #6 and Michigan State #8.  So it looks like Wisconsin is going to the Rose Bowl and Ohio State is going to a BCS Bowl.

That conclusion is reinforced by the fact that Wisconsin has the direct win against us, too.

MSU is justifiably lower in the rankings because they have the lowest-quality loss: Wisconsin lost to MSU, a top-ten team.  We lost to Wisconsin, also a top-ten team.  MSU lost to Iowa (by a lot), which had a very good start to their season but now sits at 7-5 (4-4), only barely bowl-eligible.

Michigan State and Wisconsin are going to New Year's Day bowl games.  MSU will face Alabama in the Capital One Bowl.  Wisconsin won the Big Ten's BCS tie-breaker and will face TCU in the Rose Bowl.

Ohio State gets a prime-time match-up on January 4th.  The Buckeyes will face Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl.

Other than the NC game the Sugar Bowl is the most anticipated matchup of the BCS....

This was one hell of a year for the Big Ten. To have three teams go 11-1 overall says something about the strength of the conference. I think we'll see great games for all three.

And to put in some shit-talking for the MAC, it's worth noting that Miami and Toledo pulled off incredible comeback seasons (Miami pulled off one of the greatest comeback seasons in history). Ohio also made it to a bowl game, despite getting steamrolled by Ohio State and completely choking against Kent to close the regular season.

I think Wisky could beat anyone this year.

The Big Ten is very good this year (I think it is as competitive as the SEC). I think they can all win except maybe Michigan. Richie better win to end talk of losing his job, but Mississippi State is probably too much offense for Michigan's joke defense to handle. That could end up being a horrible game or a great game (no middle ground here). If Michigan comes out like they did in the Connecticut game, they will win. Unfortunately, Michigan did get a lot worse as the season wore on. What worries me most about Mississippi State is that all their losses were to power SEC teams. Sure, four losses is bad, but when you consider they were to Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU, that might spell doom for the Wolverines.

Iowa also has a pretty tough one with Missouri, but after seeing how they played against Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State, I think they can do it. Sure, they lost all their momentum and packed it in after the Ohio State game, but they're very capable. Michigan is the only one to bet against, but man, if they can pull an upset, that will really put a stop to all the southern-fried boosterism. Penn State has to beat Florida too (won't be easy, especially when you consider Penn State's performance against Alabama, but Florida was crushed by them too). Imagine if the Big Ten goes 4-0 against the SEC...

There needs to be a strong performance from the Big Ten in order to bring back football dominance to the north. Everyone is getting sick and tired of southerners and the media stroking off their schools.

Other than the NC game the Sugar Bowl is the most anticipated matchup of the BCS....

I'm not sure I'd go that far.  The BCS actually has a pretty good slate of bowls this year.  I'm really looking forward to Stanford-VT and Wisconsin-TCU, too.

Arkansas didn't even play for the SEC title.

Alabama-Michigan State intrigues me.

^ +1.  That should be a great game, and a chance for MSU to put a good exclamation point on its season (and attract more attention for next season), even though it didn't get the BCS berth.  The Capital One bowl execs have to be thrilled at being able to get those two teams (and for a much smaller payout than the BCS bowls and NC game).

I wou

I would go that far...All the talk on ESPN radio (other than NC game) is saying OSU and Ark is the best matchup.....Stanford vs Va tech and Wisky/TCU. Please. Arkansas gave Auburn a helluva better game than SC did in the SEC championship game. Whats your point?  Arkansas's only two losses are to Auburn and Alabama.  Stanford, TCU, and Va tech wouldn't even be in a BCS game if they played in the B10 or SEC.

Auburn vs Oregon

OSU vs Ark

MSU vs. Ala

In that order.

Ohio State is just 1-2 all-time in the Sugar Bowl, but that is nothing compared to their 0-9 record against the SEC in bowl games. Three of those losses have come during Tressel’s 10-year tenure in Columbus, but two of them were in national championship games.

“I think when you hear about matchups with SEC teams, No. 1 you’re going to play great teams,” Tressel said.

“It just so happens the record is what it is, in large part because you’ve played against great football teams. It really doesn’t have a bearing on this one.”

What will have a bearing on this game is the fact Arkansas is 10-2 this season with four wins against teams currently ranked in the BCS top-25. Both of their losses also came at the hands of current top-25 teams. One of them is playing for the national title and the other won the crystal football a year ago.

“An Ohio State-Arkansas match will capture the interest of everyone,” Tressel said.

“I don’t know too much about them other than the fact they had two losses to Alabama and Auburn and they are two of the best teams in the country.”

The Razorbacks feature one of the best passing attacks in the country behind former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett, who threw for 3,592 yards and 30 touchdowns during the regular season.

“Arkansas is one of the best teams in the country,” Tressel said.

“It’s a tremendous challenge and we’re going to have to play our best football

The Big Ten has unveiled a new conference logo and the names for the two divisions that start next year.  If you thought it would be the Woody and Bo divisions, you were way off.  The two Big Ten divisions will instead be known as (drumroll please) the 'Legends' and 'Leaders'.  Unless this is a practical joke from the Big Ten!

Below is the new logo and a link to the story from the Dispatch:

New Big Ten division names met with ridicule

By RYAN AUTULLO

BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Geographical directions were not seriously considered.  Confusion would have ensued.

How about using the names of two legendary and rival football coaches?  Too specific.  Would have shown favoritism.

When contemplating what to name its two new football divisions, Big Ten decision-makers shot down numerous options, and in the end decided to think outside the box.  It was a risk that thus far has been met with aversion.

Monday the conference announced that its two divisions — to go into effect next season — will be known as Legends and Leaders, an effort to honor the past icons of the league while keeping an eye on the present and the development of leadership among student athletes.  Based on public reaction, the league might as well have gone with Cheesy and Corny.

Logos...awful.

Division names...awful.

Trophy names...awful.

Over all, the Big Ten failed terribly with this.  I think getting Nebraska was a huge deal and then not using any of their history in naming the trophies is pretty ridiculous.

(oh, and i think the MSU/Bama match up is the best one outside of Auburn/Oregon)

I feel sorry for MSU, though.  They had a wonderful season and they will be remembered in being trounced by Alabama.  Hopefully it's a good game but Alabama has something to prove as well.

It's got a lot of interesting story lines.  The fact that two out of MSU's last 4 coaches is on the Alabama staff and MSU getting snubbed will hopefully motivate the team.  I have faith in Dantonio getting the team ready and up for the game.  Alabama is a great 3 loss team and would have been in the title game if it weren't for a number of injuries.

With a month to heal, both teams won't have any excuse for not performing.

Delany: Big Ten could revisit division names

CHICAGO - Jim Delany has spent more than two decades as commissioner of the Big Ten, overseeing two conference expansions and the formation of the Big Ten Network.  None of it prepared him for the overwhelmingly negative reaction to the conference's new division names.

Delany said during an interview with WGN AM-720 in Chicago on Thursday that the names Legends and Leaders were picked to highlight the conference's rich history, and that "to a great extent it's fallen on deaf ears."  Many fans have instead mocked the names and asked officials to reconsider, which Delany said could happen after the first of the year.

"I think we have enough experience with names, and expansion and development of divisions, to know that you never, rarely, get 90 percent approval rating," Delany said during the interview. "But to get a 90 percent non-approval rating was, you know, really surprising."

The league will be split into two divisions beginning next season, when Nebraska becomes the 12th member.  The Huskers will be joined by Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Iowa in the Legends Division.  Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin will comprise the Leaders Division.

At least, assuming those are still the names by then.

Ohio State football players sanctioned

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Five Ohio State football players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, must sit out the first five games of the 2011 season for accepting improper benefits, the NCAA ruled Thursday.

A sixth football player must sit out the first game in 2011 for receiving discounted services in violation of NCAA rules.

All of the players be eligible for the Jan. 4 Allstate Sugar Bowl, however.
