November 29, 20159 yr I love the analysis and optimism but there's no way they jump either Iowa or MSU after whichever team wins big ten title game "No way" that they jump Iowa if/when MSU beats the Hawkeyes? That's a bold statement.
November 29, 20159 yr I meant no way they jump the winner. If it's msu, they beat OSU. If it's iowa, they are undefeated Conf champs.
November 29, 20159 yr I meant no way they jump the winner. If it's msu, they beat OSU. If it's iowa, they are undefeated Conf champs. Oh, well of course, but that's not what I said. My point is that at the moment Ohio State is basically assured of being #5 at worst and they need just one more domino to fall.
November 29, 20159 yr So you think a team like Alabama or Clemson losing could mean two Big Ten teams in the playoff?
November 29, 20159 yr So you think a team like Alabama or Clemson losing could mean two Big Ten teams in the playoff? Normally, no. However if it comes down to a 1-loss Clemson or a 2-loss Alabama versus a 1-loss Ohio State, with none of them being conference champs, I like OSU's chances if only because they're the defending champ and their loss came earlier (i.e. they ended their season on a high note). I think they'll have a hard time keeping out a team trending upward that won it all last year. But in looking at matchups, I'm not seeing Carolina or Florida coming through for the Buckeyes.
December 1, 20159 yr Poor photoshop, but still made me giggle. Ok, back to the discussion on hand Wow, the Buckeyes dominated so hard they actually chased the daylight away from TSUN.
December 9, 20159 yr Co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash is leaving to be the next head coach at Rutgers. Ash joined Luke Fickell as co-DC two seasons ago to help stabilize a shaky defense. Now OSU needs to fill another assistant coach vacancy: http://www.landgrantholyland.com/2015/12/5/9854044/ohio-state-football-defensive-coordinator-candidates-2015-2016
December 9, 20159 yr So, the Buckeyes finished #7 in the final CFP rankings and will face #8 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day: http://www.landgrantholyland.com/2015/12/6/9857134/ohio-state-nd-fiesta-bowl-2016-game-time-tv-schedule And this year, it's the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl. December 11, 20159 yr So yeah: http://www.landgrantholyland.com/2015/12/11/9891762/ohio-state-football-adolphus-washington-suspension-fiesta-bowl
December 11, 20159 yr ^They're gonna have to move Bosa inside on a full-time basis for the Fiesta Bowl. DT is probably our 'thinnest' position (no irony intended).
December 11, 20159 yr WOW, I really did not see this hire happening... Greg Schiano to be named Ohio State's defensive coordinator replacing Chris Ash
December 11, 20159 yr ^Well.... he won't be the head coach and his co-coordinator can kick his a$$ if he gets out of line, so we probably don't have to be worried about the same concerns which arose while he was at Rutgers.
December 14, 20159 yr I was surprised Schiano took a DC job because he had been a head coach at Rutgers for 11 years and at Tampa Bay for 2 years. He probably could have gotten another HC job at a decent program with a vacancy. But apparently Schiano and Meyer are good friends: http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/128409/urban-meyers-recruiting-pitch-lands-another-big-name-coach-for-his-defensive-staff

January 2, 20169 yr ^ I think you meant to say that Alabama was lucky to face MSU instead of OSU in this year's playoff semifinal game.
January 2, 20169 yr Osu was lucky to play nd, instead of one of the sec teams You mean like last year in the Sugar bowl? Let's just say Saban was happy not having to face Urban again.
January 2, 20169 yr Osu was lucky to play nd, instead of one of the sec teams What SEC team would they have faced? Ole Miss? OSU was clearly one of the 4 best teams in the country, and I don't think ANYONE wanted to have to play them in a bowl or playoff game this year. It was a great season for the Buckeyes, but unfortunately I think some fans have "Alabama Syndrome", where anything less than a National Championship is considered under performing. Yes, it was disappointing to not be able to see the Bucks chase a repeat title, but a one-loss season capped off by a bowl victory over ND is pretty damn good.
January 3, 20169 yr Yesterday's win was bittersweet for the players, particularly Braxton Miller. I don't like to play the game of "what if," but I really wish this squad would have gotten a chance at the playoff considering the way they've been playing lately. Not winning a championship is one thing, but not having a chance when you know you could compete is a different story.
January 4, 20169 yr Alabama was very happy not to have to face this year's OSU team, though he has no one to thank for that (and we have no one to blame for that) but us. It sucks, because this should have been our year. I know we always use the "reloading, not rebuilding" cliche, but seriously, we are losing a ton of big players between graduation and early declarations this year.
January 4, 20169 yr It was a great season for the Buckeyes, but unfortunately I think some fans have "Alabama Syndrome", where anything less than a National Championship is considered under performing. anything less than the best is a felony

Next year, we might consider ourselves lucky to finish 10-3.
January 4, 20169 yr Next year will all depend on how well we reload. Bosa is irreplaceable. Perhaps Zeke too. But we will have to wait and see if Weber is as good as advertised
January 4, 20169 yr http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-16/2016-ohio-state-buckeyes-football-schedule.php It could be worse than 10-3 looking at next year's schedule if the talent doesn't pan out: Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan State, Michigan are all real tests for OSU. The Buckeyes will be playing 2 current CFP teams on the road next year. In fact there aren't any real pushovers except for Tulsa, Rutgers and Maryland.

January 4, 20169 yr I think people are going to be surprised by the development of some of our younger guys between now and the start of next season. There are guys like Curtis Samuel who didn't touch the ball enough IMO. I think a few of the younger LBs are more 'talented' than Perry, such as Booker. But what we need more than anything is for some young guys to step up on the interior of the DL. Hill showed some promise in the bowl game. Also, and this may be the biggest change from this year, JT will be the starter from the first day of Spring ball. And we will also get Noah Brown back from injury. He was supposed to be an impact WR this year, but broke his leg before the season started. Dude is huge for a WR.

January 5, 20169 yr Marshall is a bit of a surprise. Not sure he will go as high as he apparently thinks he will He may think he goes higher this year than next, with Noah Brown emerging.
January 5, 20169 yr ^Perhaps. But I don't think they play the same position. Jalin was playing Devin Smith's position, whereas Noah was supposed to play the slot WR (with Thomas being the other outside WR). Jalin was best suited for the H-back, but Braxton switching to that position (plus Samuel and Wilson also playing there) forced him to the outside. He might have improved his stock had he returned for another year, with a stable starting QB, to prove that he is a legit NFL talent at WR. But maybe the scouts had seen enough. I do know that Urban educates his players on where they can be expected to be picked prior to them declaring for the draft. Speaking of Braxton, anyone else think that his best NFL position might be RB?
January 5, 20169 yr Spring Ball is going to be very interesting. There are some locks for starters, but many open positions with some great prospects vying to separate from the pack On the DL, I think Hubbard and Lewis have the DE's on lock. Jalyn Holmes should play a lot too and, depending on whether he is healthy and stays at DE (as opposed to DT), Nick Bosa could be in the mix. DT is a lot more iffy. I saw enough of Michael Hill to think he has one of the spots. The other spot is up for grabs probably between Bosa and a few freshman from this current year. McMillian obviously will hold his position at MLB. Chris Worley (great guy who dates one of my friends' daughters) is likely to take over for Lee, and Dante Booker for Perry. There are, however, a few current freshman to keep an eye on, particularly Jerome Baker and Justin Hilliard. Conley will be back at CB. The other starter is likely to be Damon Webb, but Marshon Lattimore will get a serious look if he can finally get healthy. The safeties is where it really is a crap shoot..... maybe Malik Hooker and Erik Smith. But watch out for someone like Webb to switch to S if they feel there is better depth at CB. They would love it if Cam Burrows could stay healthy, but he hasn't been able to do that. On the OL, other than Price and Eflien, your guess is as good as mine. TE should be Marcus Baugh RB I expect to be Mike Weber, who redshirted this year, and maybe a bit of Curtis Samuel H-Back will likely be shared between Samuel and Dontre Wilson Other than Brown, there should be an intense battle for the WR spots. There is a ton of young talent at this position and probably better size than we've had in awhile. Watch out fo KJ Hill. Hopefully Paris Campbell spends a good amount of the winter working on his hands. James Clark and Terry McLaurin are both smaller speedsters who could get some field time.
February 4, 20169 yr The Buckeyes struggled last season with offensive coordinator Tom Herman's departure to Houston. Offensive line coach Ed Warinner split time as the team's OC with new hire Tim Beck. For most of the season Tim Beck called the plays from the box, while Warinner coached the O-line from the sideline. After the MSU loss, Meyer had Warinner join Beck to call the plays from the box for the Michigan game and the bowl game. The offense looked much better in those games. So for the 2016 season, Meyer said he would keep this arrangement. In order to do this, Warinner will no longer coach the O-line. Taking over the O-line coaching will be Greg Studrawa. Studrawa is a former offensive line coach at Maryland, LSU and Bowling Green. He also worked with Meyer at Bowling Green: http://www.landgrantholyland.com/2016/1/14/10773450/ohio-state-greg-studrawa-ed-warinner-tim-beck http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2016/01/who_is_greg_studrawa_meet_ohio.html
February 4, 20169 yr As has been discussed earlier, the Buckeyes are losing of ton of talent to graduation and early declarations this year. So much that they'll have only 3 returning starters on offense and 3 returning starters on defense. Although they did get some good news that senior receiver Corey Smith has been granted an extra year of eligibility after breaking his leg in the Indiana game and can play next season. But the "reloading, not rebuilding" cliche will be tested. And on the reloading front, yesterday was national signing day. The Buckeyes signed 25 players (7 have already enrolled for spring semester) and had a Top 5 recruiting class, as rated by all four recruiting rankers: Scout.com: #2 Rivals.com: #3 247 Sports: #4 ESPN.com: #5 Meet the 2016 recruiting class: http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2016/02/03/9999-osu-recruits-bios.html

April 17, 20169 yr Beautiful day yesterday for OSU's Spring Game. Attendance was 100,189: http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2016/04/17/0416-spring-gamer.html Photos of the 2016 Spring Game: http://www.dispatch.com/content/slideshows/2016/04/16/0416-spring-game.html
April 18, 20169 yr Very hard to get a read on the offense with so many of the 1st teamers not playing. None of the top 4 WRs played and a few of the OLs missed as well. But the 'next men up' on D looked great (although there may have been an effect of the O being thin). Malik Hooker will be our next stud DB. The top 3 OLBs on both sides look more in the mold of Darren Lee than Josh Perry in that they are more quick and athletic than raw power. A ton of potential amongst the young guys on the DL, at least in terms of getting to the QB.
May 3, 20169 yr A momentus 2016 NFL draft class for The Ohio State University. To sustain a National Championship-level program in college football, the ability to recruit top-level players is necessary. Top-level players are looking to advance into the NFL. And having 12 OSU players drafted by NFL teams is a powerful promotional tool for Urban Meyer's ability to recruit. The 12 players was the most for any college in the 2016 draft (Clemson was next highest with 9). OSU also had 3 undrafted free-agents to sign with NFL teams. There was also a player who was recruited by and played three years at OSU, but transferred to another school for his senior season after being suspended. So, in total, there were 16 players with OSU ties in the 2016 draft class. What even more amazing is that 5 players were drafted in the 1st round (an OSU record) and 11 players in the first 100 picks. DAY ONE: 1st round 3rd overall pick - Joey Bosa - DE (San Diego) - An elite talent that went higher than some projections. Bosa's off to the (LA?) Chargers and the beginning of a long NFL career. 4th overall pick - Ezekiel Elliott - RB (Dallas) - Zeke defied the new "never-draft-a-RB-in-the-1st-round" rule. Could be a great fit and the missing piece in Dallas for their upcoming season. 10th overall pick - Eli Apple - CB (NY Giants) - A fine talent and a great player at OSU. But possibility a stretch at 10 and the second CB taken in the draft. But the Giants filled a position of need and got an "Apple" to the Big Apple! 16th overall pick - Taylor Decker - OT (Detroit) - Detroit desperately needs better offensive linemen. And they certainly got better with the 6′ 7″, 315 lb. anchor of OSU's line. Decker was the fourth OL taken in the draft. 20th overall pick - Darron Lee - LB (NY Jets) - Candace Lee's son capped off his amazing rise from 200 lb. high school QB & 3-star recruit to red-shirt freshman to starting LB at OSU to NFL 1st-round draft pick. He made his mom proud! DAY TWO: 2nd & 3rd rounds * 2nd round, 39th overall pick - Noah Spence - DE/LB (Tampa Bay) - This gets an asterisk because, although Spence was recruited by and played three years at OSU, he was suspended from this year's team for an off-season drug incident. Spence transferred to lower-division Eastern Kentucky for his senior season. 2nd round, 47th overall pick - Michael Thomas - WR (New Orleans) - Big, sure-handed receiver that might have landed in a great situation (if the Brees/Payton combo can stay together). Likely went a bit lower than his talent-level because his OSU's numbers are not as eye-popping as WR's in spread-offense schools. 2nd round, 61st overall pick - Vonn Bell - S (New Orleans) - A surprise drop for a player expected to go in the 25-40 range. But the Saints traded up for this pick, so they must have realized Vonn's value at this discounted spot. 3rd round, 80th overall pick - Adolphus Washington - DT (Buffalo) - Interior linemen aren't as highly valued as speedy pass-rushers in the NFL. And Washington didn't help his draft stock with a Fiesta Bowl suspension. But he might be an undervalued pick at this spot and a solid pickup for the Bills. 3rd round, 85th overall pick - Braxton Miller - WR (Houston) - No other Buckeye came into this draft with such a combination of promise and question marks. His senior season as WR hi-lighted both sides for pro teams. It will be interesting to see how his pro career evolves. 3rd round, 94th overall pick - Nick Vannett - TE (Seattle) - Big tight-ends are highly valued in today's NFL. And at 6'6", 260 lb., Vannett fits the bill - despite being somewhat under-utilized in the OSU offense. DAY THREE: 4th - 7th rounds / undrafted free-agents 4th round, 102th overall pick - Joshua Perry - LB (San Diego) - Had an OSU career almost on a par with 1st-round pick Darron Lee. But Perry doesn't have Lee's quickness, which lowers his NFL value. 4th round, 139th overall pick - Cardale Jones - QB (Buffalo) - Chosen with the final pick in the 4th round. Cardale's combo of promise and question marks almost rivals Braxton's. But his sub-par final season with the Buckeyes hi-lighted the questions and obscured his magical three-game National Championship run. undrafted free-agent - Tyvis Powell - S (Seattle) - He's a big safety at 6'3", 210 who is relatively quick. Kind of a surprise he didn't get picked up in a late round. But Seattle is a good place to be a defensive back prospect. undrafted free-agent - Jalin Marshall - WR (NY Jets) - Jalin's speedy, but not top NFL-level speedy. And he's also under 6-foot. That's a combo that doesn't impress NFL talent evaluators. undrafted free-agent - Chase Farris - OG (Detroit) - Started every game in OSU's National Championship season. But not the dynamic talent most NFL teams crave. However Detroit (as mentioned in the 1st round Decker pick) desperately needs OL help. So Farris will get his shot.
May 11, 20169 yr -- Knee injury shelves QB Stephen Collier for season: http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2016/05/05/0504-osu-qb-undergoes-surgery.html The Buckeyes face a QB issue opposite to last year's pre-season. Last year's issue was three experienced starting QB's available going into the 2015 season. Going into this 2016 season, they'll have just one - J.T. Barrett. Stephen Collier, a third-year sophomore from Georgia, underwent surgery to repair a knee injury suffered in the spring game and will miss the 2016 season. Collier had competed with redshirt freshman Joe Burrow from Athens to serve as backup to Barrett. Collier’s injury leaves just two scholarship quarterbacks on the current roster. Although the team expects incoming freshman Dwayne Haskins Jr. from Maryland to compete for the third-string QB spot when he reports in June for summer conditioning drills and into pre-season camp in August.
May 11, 20169 yr This does not concern me. Collier has failed to impress whenever given the opportunity. Burrow was clearly the #2. And don't forget about Torrence Gibson, a convert to WR, who was recruited as a QB and can be used as an emergency backup. It would be a shame if it came to that as Gibson was very impressive in the spring game at WR.
