The sexual assault allegations against Gareon Conley (he is not charged yet) will cost him millions.  He was a consensus top 15 pick and now might not even be drafted.  If the Pats take him with their first pick (second round), I want an investigation.

Recap of the Buckeyes taken in the 2017 NFL Draft.  It wasn't the record-level 12 players selected in 2016, but getting 6 players chosen in the top three rounds is still impressive.  Plus the 7 drafted this year combined with the 12 last year is the most NFL picks produced by any school over the past two years:  http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2017-nfl-draft/2017/04/81999/ohio-state-pumping-out-nfl-talent-at-high-rate

  • CB Marshon Lattimore; first round, #11 overall, New Orleans Saints

  • S Malik Hooker; first round, #15 overall, Indianapolis Colts

  • CB Gareon Conley; first round, #24 overall, Oakland Raiders

  • WR/HB Curtis Samuel; second round, #40 overall, Carolina Panthers

  • LB Raekwon McMillan; second round, #54 overall, Miami Dolphins

  • C/G Pat Elflein; third round, #70 overall, Minnesota Vikings

  • WR Noah Brown; 7th round, #239 overall, Dallas Cowboys

And there were some Buckeyes that signed as undrafted free agents:

  • WR/HB Dontre Wilson signed with the Chargers

  • Punter Cameron Johnston signed with the Eagles

  • WR Corey Smith signed with the Bengals

I think Noah Brown ends up being a steal in the 7th

11W's preview of OSU's Week 1 depth chart:  https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2017-season-preview/2017/08/84487/projecting-ohio-states-week-1-depth-chart

- At the QB position, redshirt sophomore backup Joe Burrow broke a bone in his throwing hand last week.  So it looks like redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins and true freshman Tate Martell will be backing up J.T. Barrett.

- At the RB position, last season's starter Mike Weber has been fighting a hamstring injury thru training camp.  Although Weber is said to be okay for tonight's opener, true freshman J.K. Dobbins has mightily impressed during camp and might get alot of carries until Weber is 100 percent.  Maybe even after, if he continues to impress.

When was the last time tOSU opened up with conference play? Been awhile.

Basically after Oklahoma it's a snoozefest until Penn State.

When was the last time OSU opened up with conference play? Been awhile.

1976, when OSU opened against Michigan State.

They've had a total of 12 season openers against Big Ten teams.  But yeah it's been awhile.

GAME #1 RECAP (W 49-21 at Indiana):  http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400935229

Looking at the 49-21 final score, casual observers might say "another easy Buckeye win over the Hoosiers".  But it wasn't "easy" for much of last night's game.  In the first half, Indiana's high-tempo spread passing offense was humming, and the OSU defense struggled to keep it in check.  While the OSU offense looked flat.  Indiana held a 14-13 halftime lead.

OSU scored first to open the second half, and Indiana matched to retake the lead 21-20 with 4:56 left in the third quarter.  But from then on, it was all Buckeyes - scoring 29 unanswered points for the 49-21 win.

Nice halftime adjustments (and maybe wearing down Indiana) saw the OSU offense look effective and pop off some big plays - and saw the OSU defense get to Indiana's QB and force 2 INT's (should've been 3 but two OSU DB's got in each others way for one errant pass!).  Barrett's numbers eventually looked good.  True frosh J.K. Dobbins had 29 carries for 181 yards (Weber didn't play).  And I was quite impressed with OSU's secondary - which might sound strange with Indiana totaling 420 passing yards.  But Indiana's QB threw 65 times(!) and OSU had three new DB's making their first start.  The third straight season the Buckeyes had to basically rebuild their secondary due to losing players to the pros!

^All I can say is wow talking about the talent level and good looking, uber athletic young players for OSU.

JK Dobbins looked like an amazing player, great heart and tenacity, he is going to be really good, him and Weber.  I actually was a lot more impressed with Dobbins than I have ever been with Weber.

Paris was so fast, he left everyone in his wake.  I agree with you, the young DB's looked extremely talented and athletic.  Everyone knows this, but Urban has them humming with talent dripping out the bowl.

Indiana showed a lot of grit and heart like they always have the last few years, but everyone knew it would blow open in the 2nd half.

Dobbins didn't look that great to me. He's small and he seemed to run towards the pile than look for an opening. It's early though and the O-line got pushed around a lot in the first half.

I still think the jury is out on Barrett and I don't think he can lead this team to a title. As much as Kirk was defending him his progressions are slow. He reminds me a bit of Weeden, you can see him counting and looking at each receiver.

Indiana was in control for 2 1/2+ quarters of this game, they just didn't have the athleticism to go the distance. No reason to think, at this point, that Clemson or Alabama wouldn't be in control from beginning to end.

When Dobbins did that double jump cut....I thought of Barry Sanders. This kid's going to be special.

^I think Ohio State looked good, normal for a first game especially against a team in Indiana who has proven tough the last 2-3 years.  It went about how I would expect a first game of the year to look especially against a conference opponent.

I think Dobbins AND Weber are going to be a good 1-2 punch.  They will get a ton of yards and carries, depending if OSU can open up the downfield passing attack.

By the end of the year, they should be very tough.  Right now I am certain Clemson or Alabama or even a Florida State could knock them off no doubt, but they are young and should be seasoned by Big Ten Title time.  Michigan will be a tough out, PSU and also a plug for my home state Iowa, as Iowa is an away game later in the year and should be a tough one too.

Dobbins didn't look that great to me.

JT hasn't been the same since his ankle injury in 2014.  Honestly, I'm kind of sick of this dink and dunk passing game.  No vertical threat.  No WR took Devin Smith's place and then no one replaced Michael Thomas.  So he's working with an average receiving corps at best.

Funny to think...if he doesn't get hurt, I don't think we win the title that season.  Cardale could stretch the field and brought a different element.  Still, Barrett's name will be all over the record books.  Part of me just wishes we could start the Haskins (or Martell?) era sooner rather than later, though.  Barrett usually doesn't make mistakes, but he's not a very good thrower of the ball.  He can manage the game just fine, but at this rate defenses will load the box and dare receivers to get open (they can't) and if they do then dare JT to hit them/throw them open (he usually can't).

There's enough talent to go 12-1 or even 13-0 in the regular season, but with JT at QB I don't think we can beat Bama, Clemson, or FSU.

You're the only person in America who wasn't impressed by the kid.  THink about that.

Why are some of you including Clemson in your title contenders?  Dabo is a great coach but Watson was the reason they their team was great the last two years.  They have a really good DL and always seem to have great WR's but it took Watson to get them over the hump.  Color me skeptical on them until I see their new QB.  Whoever it is sure as hell isn't going to be as good as Watson.

Today's the tenth anniversary of the greatest thing to ever happen in Ann Arbor that didn't involve the Ohio State University.

It's almost as revered as 2002.

It will be on the Oval as well, a significant improvement from its location at the last OSU hosted game day near the RPAC (just south of the shoe). The picture attached is the current setup from earlier this morning looking west towards Thompson Library.

huge matchup today.  I think the Defense wins it for the Buckeyes today.  I expect the offense to do just enough to win, but defense will stuff the run & pressure Mayfield into some bad throws & turn the ball over.  I don't expect Coach Meyer to show a whole lot of offense yet either.  Penn State is still over a month away

Hoping the Buckeyes win, but I am worried about this game.

Which OSU team from the opening game shows up?  The mediocre first half team or the dominant second half team?  Was the opening game just a shakedown cruise to prep for tonight's big matchup?

Does Oklahoma keep rolling?  They had a terrible 1-2 start last year - losing to Houston and then OSU - but hasn't lost since.  10 straight to finish 2016 and a rout over UTEP in their 2017 opener.  Baker Mayfield is playing as well as a QB can play right now.

Ohio State played one of their best games of 2016 in that 45-24 win at Norman.  Oklahoma has every incentive to return the favor in Columbus.

But then again, what do I know?  Des, Eddie and Corso all picked Ohio State to win this morning!  So GO BUCKS!!

Legend of Urban Meyer is getting whittled away.  When was their last signature win against a big opponent?  The 2014 title game of course but what since then?

JT simply looked over matched.

GAME #2 RECAP (L 16-31 vs. Oklahoma):  http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400934502

A tight first half last night led to a 3-3 halftime.  Early in the second half, it looked like the Buckeyes might just eke out a win after they took a 10-3 lead.  Oklahoma tied it back up and then OSU retook a 13-10 lead midway in the third quarter.

But it was the Sooners that took control of the game after that - reeling off three straight TD's.  The dagger came early in the fourth quarter.  With OSU down 24-13, JT Barrett threw an INT, giving Oklahoma a short field that they converted into a TD to go up 31-13.

Mayfield goes 27-35 for 386 YDS, 3 TD.  Barrett goes 19-35 for 183 YDS, 1 INT.

JT simply looked over matched.

The scouting report is out on him.  Give up the short pass underneath, but not the long ball.  Let OSU have the dinks/dunks.  Not sure why they can't just line up under center & run off tackle every couple plays.  Get some positive yardage, then setup play action pass...  maybe a little old-school but it works

^ Yup.

Legend of Urban Meyer is getting whittled away.  When was their last signature win against a big opponent?  The 2014 title game of course but what since then?

Wait...what? They beat four Top 15 opponents last season, including two on the road, and one at home by almost 60 points.

Ok I was exaggerating in my comment but I wouldn't call Nebraska a signature win.  They lost 4 games including the bowl game to Tennessee.  Pretty lame season

They had an entire offseason to fix the anemic offense...hired new OC...and yet, they looked basically the same as they did against Clemson.

In my mind, it has to be coaching/game plan/preparation.  There's no way the talent of the players at OSU is lacking

GAME #3 RECAP (W 38-7 vs. Army):  http://www.espn.com/college-football/playbyplay?gameId=400934563

Ohio State needed a bounce-back after last week's loss.  So how about an impressive win over an impressive team?  Just how impressive was Army going into to Saturday?

-

- Army was undefeated! (Okay, their wins were over Fordham and Buffalo)

- Army is a program with three national championships!  (Okay, their 3 titles came in 1944, 1945 & 1946)

-

Well, at least OSU's passing defense rebounded bigly after giving up 420 & 386 yards in their first two games. The Silver Bullets held Army to only 19 yards!!!  (Okay, that's what Army usually averages in passing yards)

15 of JT Barrett's 25 completions were completed at or behind the line of scrimmage.

He's still an awful downfield passer and Haskins came in and looked like an All-American by comparison.

A couple of off-the-field OSU football stories before today's nooner with UNLV:

The Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University have reached an agreement that will end a potential trademark dispute and allow them to share the acronym OSU:

http://www.dispatch.com/news/20170921/ohio-state-and-oklahoma-state-reach-agreement-on-osu-trademark

And a new analysis of revenue and expenses for college football programs published by the Wall Street Journal rates the Ohio State University Buckeyes as the most valuable CFB team.  The top three, all valued at over a billion each, were:  Ohio State at $1.5 billion; Texas at $1.24 billion; and Oklahoma at $1 billion:

GAME #4 RECAP (W 54-21 vs. UNLV):  http://www.espn.com/college-football/playbyplay?gameId=400935363

Turned out to be the blowout nearly everyone expected.  Buckeyes were up 37-0 halfway thru the second quarter.  JT was replaced by backup Dwayne Haskins before halftime and played the remainder of the game (with the exception of the final drive of the game, when Joe Burrow was brought in and completed four passes).  Nice to see Burrow return from the broken throwing hand injury he suffered during training camp.

GAME #5 RECAP (W 56-0 vs. Rutgers):  http://www.espn.com/college-football/playbyplay?gameId=400935369

The Buckeyes came into Piscataway a 29-point favorite.  They ended up nearly doubling that point spread with a dominating performance.  Rutgers had a chance to avoid a shutout with a 32-yd FG attempt with 0:43 remaining - but it doinked off the upright! (it was that kind of game for the Scarlet Knights)

What a game on Saturday.

Ohio State overcame 1st half deficits of 14-0, 21-3, and 28-10 as well as being down 35-20 (all largely via shooting themselves in the foot with horrible kickoff coverage and a bunch of penalties as well as some questionable calls by the officials) to beat #2 Penn State 39-38 in an instant classic.  The offense came alive in the 2nd half and J.T. Barrett led three scoring drives in the final quarter to seal the comeback.

For some reason that loss yesterday felt even worse than the beatdown by Clemson last year.  Probably because it wasn't supposed to happen, Iowa was unranked, etc.  The legend of Urban Meyer is getting tarnished

Welp, no need to watch the rest of the season.

Defense better get it's act together - if they don't play alot better they will lose to UM for sure

I think as the resident Iowan on the UrbanOhio board and a big time college football fan, this game was a shock to everyone.

I will say, Iowa has been close this year to breaking out quite a few times but couldn't figure out the offense, they kept saying it was close inside the facilities, but they finally figured it out.

All that said, no one saw that coming, it was a blitz.  Iowa lost on the road to MSU by 7, they lost at home to PSU by 2 on the last second, and lost in OT on the road to Northwestern.  I think for whatever reason so far this year, the B1G is really balanced.  It's hard to say how good they are because they are beating each other up.  OSU has MSU at home this weekend, another tough team.

Wisconsin is the only undefeated left, and Iowa travels there this weekend.  Will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out.  All that said, OSU is young on defense, they lost two o-linemen in the game and they lost momentum and couldn't get it back.  That happens in college football.

Barrett regressed this week.  He goes through his progressions like a robot.  He stares the receivers down and if they aren't open by 3 steps, he doesn't throw it.  He has no ability to "throw a man open" or to look the safeties off.  Watch the highlights of Baker Mayfield - he throws it where his guys can only get it.  They aren't always wide open.  By the time Barrett goes to his checkdown, they are covered.  All the INT's he threw on Saturday, the receiver was NOT open and he was trying to force the throw.  In most cases, he had plenty of time yet and wasn't being forced out of the pocket yet.  He should be throwing on the run a lot more with designed rollouts.  The offense still seems unable/unwilling to complete long pass plays over the top.  I can't believe our receivers cant beat their man downfield.
