November 17, 200618 yr As a proud Ohioan, who, despite not currently living in the state has never changed his home of record (and therefore pays state income tax for reason only of loyalty), I don't feel that I need to apologize for the fact that I can't view Ohio State as "Ohio's team". As I lifelong Cincinnatian, I see them as essentially a local Columbus team, and view their aggrandizing of the allegiance of the entire state as presumptuous. A-fricking-men!
November 17, 200618 yr Lincoln, I'm with you about the SEC. I lived in Memphis and Nashville for a few years.......Thank God I'm back home. You resided in Memphazz and NashVegas and lived to tell about it?? Chief Wimwar, I have a new layer of respect for you! We're glad to have you back! And I kidnapped one of Nashville's finest and now have her loving Cleveland. You abducted a cop? Like in Reservoir Dogs? Man. a doctor.
November 17, 200618 yr I will close with this: I've only started paying attention to college football because it is the primary obsession of my current co-workers. And my current location has brought one passion in me to the fore- I HATE THE SEC. Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken are so with you on that...
November 17, 200618 yr That's the thing. Georgia hates Tennessee. But if TN makes it to the national championship, they love TN and hate the non-SEC team. Oh, it was so glorious living in TN when OSU won the national championship. What's funny is that I grew up a Notre Dame fan. Upon lowering myself to the south, I found myself rooting for OSU because of all the randomly-aimed negatively that the SEC fans spewed out towards anything Big Ten. Now I'm 50% ND, 50% OSU. And, I do have a soft spot in my heart for Michigan just because I'd find my self rooting for them when they'd play an SEC team in a bowl game. I don't get the people down here. A guy I know from Chattanooga is a rabid Tennesse fan. When he mentioned that he was planning on going to college, I asked where. He said, "probably UTC (University of Tennesse-Chattanooga)." When I suggested that if he tried to simply apply for admission to the Knoxville campus he would probably get in, he said how he didn't want to leave home. I can't imagine a UC student loving OSU unless they grew up as a big fan in Columbus (which would lend credence to my theory that OSU is to a large extent a local Columbus team). The way people in the South take one program as the "state team" also baffles me. They love the University of Georgia Football team, despite never having attended the school, and despite the fact that Georgia Tech is more convenient to get to and has won more NCAA Championships. But for some reason the Bulldogs ARE Georgia, just like the Crimson Tide is 'Bama (which is why I secretly pull for Auburn, just so the total number of disappointed SEC fans is as high as possible).

November 17, 200618 yr Bo Schembechler has died. I'd accuse you of the worst kind of trash talk if it weren't true: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/football/ncaa/11/17/schembechler.obit.ap/?cnn=yes
November 17, 200618 yr Well, lets hope the Dead S. don't get much press this weekend. I think its time the band find a new name.
November 17, 200618 yr Well, lets hope the Dead S. don't get much press this weekend. I think its time the band find a new name. Yeah, within 5 minutes of hearing Bo's death, the Dead S. went from being my favorite bandname to my least favorite. :-( Damn you Michigan!!!!! :whip:
November 17, 200618 yr Well, lets hope the Dead S. don't get much press this weekend. I think its time the band find a new name. Yeah, within 5 minutes of hearing Bo's death, the Dead S. went from being my favorite bandname to my least favorite. :-( Damn you Michigan!!!!! :whip: Then again... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2666106 "The Dead Schembechlers, a Columbus, Ohio-based punk band which adopted the name of the late Michigan coach and dresses like late Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, will continue with concert plans on Friday night. The band, featured in Pat Forde's Forde-Yard Dash on Tuesday, is headlining a "Hate Michigan Rally" in Columbus. A statement on the band's website, headlined "BO SCHEMBECHLER: OSU'S MOST VALIANT FOE" said on Friday: "The band is crushed to learn of the death of Bo Schembechler. We named this band after Coach Schembechler to honor him as the face of Wolverine football. We have never wished ill will upon him in any way and have always wished him the best. When we learned that Bo had seen our web site and was amused by it we were delighted. We were simply delighted. He said to those with him as he read it, "See, I still matter in Columbus!" That may have been the greatest understatement in football history. We believe that he took the band's name as the compliment that it was meant as and that he was flattered by it. We wish to extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to his family. We are truly sorry for their loss. "
November 17, 200618 yr Well, lets hope the Dead S. don't get much press this weekend. I think its time the band find a new name. I've already suggested "The Woody Heys," or should they go the jamband route, "Woody Haze."
November 18, 200618 yr sure he was no doyt perry, but bo will always be remembered as one of bg's great coaches. prob for that michigan stint too i guess.

November 18, 200618 yr Author • It is true that the late Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, who did more to pump up the negative feelings in the rivalry than any man, refused to fill up his car in the state of Michigan. "I'll tell you why we don't," Hayes said, according to the seminal book, "Woody Hayes and the 100-Yard War." "It's because I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan. We'll coast and push this goddam car to the Ohio line before I give this state a nickel of my money!" • It is true that Hayes sometimes bunked his team in Toledo on the night before a game in Ann Arbor so the Buckeyes could sleep on Ohio ground. That's why we love Woody Hayes!
November 18, 200618 yr Not sure if this has been noted, but the Dead Schembechlers are officially changing their name. Well, we are finally at game time, and I must say I have had enough of the hype, but this has to be good for Columbus with all the exposure. I just hope the students behave. For now I am headed to BW3's to watch the game, which should be a great one - GO BUCKS!
November 18, 200618 yr 28-14 If not for that dumb ass pass interference call it would be 28-7. I don't like the "roughing the center call" but it is what it is! Michigan isn't putting any pressure on the Bucks or Troy. WAY TO GO Ted Ginn, Jr. discuss!!
November 19, 200618 yr If not for that dumb ass pass interference call it would be 28-7. You got your "luckeyes" call with that ridiculous 15-yard penalty against Michigan in the fourth quarter. Poor Troy Smith looked like a pussy. Had that not happened, Michigan probably would have won the game. You won this battle, but now it's time for round 2!!! Oh, and have fun cleaning up the after-riot mess in Bustown tomorrow. Now who really is likely to be the loser?- the city of Columbus. Shoulda....woulda....coulda. The bucks got the "W". Thats all that counts. This was the BCS championship game! I hope there is no rubbermatch!
November 19, 200618 yr Great game although I was disappointed that the Bucks opened the door a couple of times with turnovers. I certainly would argue also who benefitted most from "lucky" calls. Troy Smith has definitely proven himself Heisman worthy and seems to thrive in the big games. If Florida and/or USC lose there could be some debate who deserves the the number 2 spot and Michigan will seem to be as good a choice as any one loss team. As a bonus, the Bearcats took out Rutgers to end any controversy of an undefeated BCS team not getting the championship game. Now we get to listen to the media debate the Bucks chances of winning the title for 50 days....it should be fun and mildly irritating.
November 19, 200618 yr C-Dawg - you think calling a guy for a helmet-to-helmet hit on a QB heading out of bounds is a questionable call? Honestly, you amaze me sometimes...

I'm pretty sure Michigan was the loser... last time I checked the scoreboard that is. I think the City of Columbus is probably pretty happy right about now.
November 19, 200618 yr Author "The final score of 42-39 ended up being lucky numbers for more than just the Buckeyes. The Ohio Lottery will pay out a total of about $2.2 million to lottery players after 4-2-3-9 were chosen as the Pick 4 numbers in a drawing shortly after the game ended." CRAZY!
November 19, 200618 yr Columbus police keep celebrating OSU fans in line By Rick Armon Beacon Journal staff writer COLUMBUS - With the spotlight from a police helicopter illuminating them from above, football fans poured onto streets and sidewalks Saturday night after Ohio State's nail-biting victory over archrival Michigan. Police sirens, car horns, irrepressible screams and rhythmic chanting of "O-H-I-O'' mingled in the cold night air as strangers offered each other high-fives. Along Lane Avenue, police tried to disperse heavy crowds early. A row of 11 horses walked down the street and sidewalk, urging people to move along. Students stood to the side, snapping pictures with cameras and cell phones. Some people gawked at the affair from their porches; others sought a better view perched on roofs. Still others were trapped, celebrating in their cars as streets quickly became gridlocked after the game. Inside Larry's, a college bar along High Street, students erupted at the final 42-39 score, then spilled outside to join the communitywide celebration. Columbus police were out in force, a presence on nearly every corner. In some cases, their cars were lined 10 deep, with red and blue lights flashing a reminder of their ever-watchful eyes. They were fulfilling the city's promise to avoid a repeat of 2002, when fans rioted after Ohio State beat Michigan in a 14-9 thriller. Full story at http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/colleges/ohio_state_university/16051858.htm "I'm going to grow my own victory field,'' said 22-year-old Michelle Haizlip, an OSU graduate student from Canton. That's going to be one AWESOME victory field.
November 19, 200618 yr I here we won't know until tomorrow when the BCS poll comes out. But ya, I here it is a strong possibility and how COOOOOL would that be!? Kicking there butts twice in a season. BOO YA! HAHA
November 19, 200618 yr i dont want to face michigan again, i want usc and if usc wins out, i think they will jump um in the bcs.
November 20, 200618 yr I'd imagine OSU has a much better chance against any other team out there - but man, talk about a historic game if they make it a rematch...with 50 days to prepare? And this rivalry? Man, that'd be something else...
November 20, 200618 yr Yeah, IF USC beaths ND soundly and doesn't lose to UCLA, I think they'll jump UM in the rankings.
November 20, 200618 yr somebody sent me this. one of woody hayes greatest hits: What an unpleasant little man.
November 20, 200618 yr I think it's silly to have a rematch. It's like the Seahawks rematching the Steelers for the Superbowl. One won, one lost. Game over. Bowls are (typically) to match two out-of-conference teams. Next. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
November 20, 200618 yr Yeah, I can see that, and you're probably right. I'm just saying it would be absolutely something else...

November 20, 200618 yr Yeah, I can see that, and you're probably right. I'm just saying it would be absolutely something else... Oh, I agree, it would be something else if it happened. November 20, 200618 yr I think it's silly to have a rematch. It's like the Seahawks rematching the Steelers for the Superbowl. One won, one lost. Game over. Bowls are (typically) to match two out-of-conference teams. Next. But having 2 rivals rematch in a bowl game (after they ended their season together) has happened. I know of at two occasions this has occured (one non-conference, one intra-conference). 1995 Sugar Bowl, Florida - Florida St. (I think it was the year that OSU won the Rose Bowl over ASU) 1979 Orange Bowl, Oklahoma - Nebraska (Back when the Big 12 was the Big 8 instead) In neither case were both teams 1-2 coming into the bowl game.
November 20, 200618 yr I think Michigan is probably the second best team in the nation, but they had their chance and I don't really think there should be a rematch. If ND somehow makes the championship game though, I'll be pissed. But what this really proves is how there should just be a tournament. Eight teams (or even 16) wouldn't be too much of a burden on anyone, especially considering how much time between now and the end of bowl season. The big bowls can keep their sponsorship, and the title game and semi finals can still rotate among the big "BCS" bowls. Middling teams can still go to the Motor City Bowl. The burden on players can be mitigated by capping the season length at 10 or 11 games, and it's still not even close to what we subject basketball players to.
November 21, 200618 yr C-Dawg, You are hilariously biased! Brady Quinn will choke?? First you say that the helmet to helmet penalty was a bad call. Now you say that Quinn will choke. He's one of the coolest cats out there. Good god.
November 21, 200618 yr I don't. We've beaten MI....they are sooooooooo 15 minutes ago! :-P I want a good old fashioned Big Ten/Pac 10 dog fight. Go Trojans! "do overs" are so 1970!
November 21, 200618 yr ^He choked horribly against Michigan. It literally was the funniest football game I've ever seen. Norte Dame is MUCH bigger rivals with USC than they are with Michigan, so the pressure is on that prima donna. I'm saying this and I want, no, NEED Norte Dame to win that game. He didn't choke. Michigan was a much stronger team. His interceptions were very catchable balls that were tipped by the receivers and luckily fell into Wolverine hands. I don't see how the game was hilarious. If you think it was hilarious, its because you wanted to see Brady fail. That shows how biased you are. How do you expect us to take you seriously when you interpret the facts so that they support your pre-designed conclusions?
November 21, 200618 yr ^The BCS is bullshit and everyone who knows it, but it's all about money in the end. The bowls have established themselves as big money-makers, and I don't think anyone wants to risk fucking that up. I think Michigan is probably the second best team in the nation, but they had their chance and I don't really think there should be a rematch. If ND somehow makes the championship game though, I'll be pissed. Michigan IS the 2nd best team in the nation and I say they deserve a shot at the national title before anyone else. Keep in mind Michigan's strength of schedule and their slaughter of Norte Dame. Obviously, if USC loses to Norte Dame (fingers crossed, but we all know that pretty boy Brady Quinn will choke), Michigan will be going to the national title game. Also keep in mind the econmic aspect. The Michigan/OSU game is perennially the highest-rated football game during the regular season. The only other game that even has a chance at topping it in TV ratings is the USC/Norte Dame rivalry. Again, the bowls are all about money... I do agree that the bowls are all about money. Thus, USC/Notre Dame or Florida is going to be playing OSU in the National Championship. They want out-of-conference, watchable games that they know fans will travel to Arizona for. USC is a no-brainer; Notre Dame will travel; Florida will travel. Again, Michigan lost. They ARE the #2 team, sure, but they LOST to the #1 team, thus they can get their "Silver Medal" in the Rose Bowl. November 21, 200618 yr I understand why people wouldn't want Michigan to play again. But, I do believe that they are the second best team in the country.
November 21, 200618 yr Oh, again, I agree. They are definately the second best team in the country...but...they lost. Thus, the idea of "consolation prize" is needed for them in the Rose Bowl.
