OSU athletics deal is future-focused

Marketing pact won't fix this year's shortfall, officials say

Tuesday,  March 31, 2009

By Mike Pramik, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State University's deal to sell its athletics programs' multimedia marketing rights won't plug a budget shortfall this year, but it could keep the department from running in the red in future years.  Once money starts flowing from the university's $110 million deal with IMG College and RadiOhio, the athletic department will be better positioned to weather the economic downturn, OSU athletics director Gene Smith said.

Football: OSU set to meld a new offense

Overhaul will test Pryor's, players' ability to adjust

Wednesday,  April 1, 2009 - 3:08 AM

By Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Spring is in the air.  So is change, it seems, for the Ohio State offense.  Terrelle Pryor said he can sense it.  From his interaction with coach Jim Tressel and offensive coordinator Jim Bollman as well as the teammates who must fill seven vacant starting spots on the offense, the sophomore quarterback said the Buckeyes are eager for the start of spring drills Thursday.

Pryor knows change is in the works, and has been for a couple of months. A year ago, OSU's offense was designed to take advantage of the talents of returning senior quarterback Todd Boeckman and tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells, with some components for Pryor, considered a passing and rushing threat.  Now, it will largely feature Pryor's talents.  That might include more use of the pistol formation, in which the quarterback lines up about 4 yards behind center with a tailback behind him. It also could include a version of the single-wing formation, in which the quarterback would line up about 7 yards behind center, but often would have a back crossing in front of him from a slot just before or just after the snap, creating options and confusion.

I wasn't planning on posting anything about yesterday's spring football scrimmage in Ohio Stadium.  I didn't even watch it.  But an attendance of over 95,000!  That's amazing!  Even by OSU Football standards!

Record crowd shows hunger for Buckeyes still ravenous

Sunday,  April 26, 2009 - 3:35 AM

By Bob Hunter, The Columbus Dispatch

There were 95,722 fans in Ohio Stadium to watch Ohio State's spring scrimmage yesterday.  No kidding.  95,722.  It was a national record for a spring football game, and the number was not inflated.  Nearly every seat in Ohio Stadium, capacity 102,329, was filled.

The crowd topped the record of 92,138 set by Alabama in 2007 when coach Nick Saban had just been hired.  It beat the Ohio State record of 76,000 set last year, although that number appeared to be inflated by about 10,000.

Baseball: Big Ten awards plentiful for OSU

Wednesday,  May 20, 2009 - 3:10 AM

By Mark Znidar, The Columbus Dispatch

Regular-season Big Ten champion Ohio State won three of the four major awards voted on by conference baseball coaches, with catcher Dan Burkhart being named player of the year, Alex Wimmers co-pitcher of the year and Bob Todd coach of the year.  Two other Buckeyes made the All-Big Ten first team -- designated hitter Ryan Dew of Worthington Kilbourne and relief pitcher Jake Hale.

Burkhart, a sophomore from Cincinnati, became the fifth Ohio State player to be named player of the year and the first since third baseman Ronnie Bourquin in 2006.  He is batting .362 with nine home runs and 57 RBI and has thrown out 18 runners.  Wimmers, a sophomore right-hander from Cincinnati, shared pitcher of the year honors with Indiana junior Eric Arnett of Watkins Memorial.  Wimmers is 9-1 and led the conference with a 2.58 ERA and 122 strikeouts.  He threw a no-hitter against Michigan.

Todd led the Buckeyes (39-15) to a seventh regular-season conference championship since 1991.

Tickets: $10 for adults, $7 for those 12 or under and 60 or over.

What's at stake: The winner receives the Big Ten's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, but it's believed regular-season champion Ohio State and runner-up Minnesota have locked up bids.

Major-league watch: Indiana right-hander Eric Arnett, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior from Watkins Memorial, is said to be a possible first-round choice in the major-league draft next month. He has won 11 of 12 starts.

NCAA BASEBALL: Ohio State's big season ends with a 37-6 thud

Monday,  June 1, 2009 - 3:13 AM

TALLAHASSE, Fla. -- Playing for a championship in an NCAA regional tournament against Florida State should have been the ultimate reward for an Ohio State baseball team that played above its limitations all season.  The Buckeyes (42-19) reached the title game by coming from five runs behind to shock second-seeded Georgia 13-6 yesterday afternoon in the losers bracket final in Dick Howser Stadium.  On Friday, the Bulldogs routed the Buckeyes 24-8 in the first round.

OSU's Smith will head NCAA panel in 2010-11

Wednesday,  July 1, 2009 -3:00 AM

By Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Gene Smith didn't know he'd be nominated by his peers on the NCAA Division I men's basketball committee to serve as its chairman for the 2010-11 season.  The Ohio State athletics director certainly didn't expect to win by acclamation.  But that's what happened last week when the 10-person committee met in New Mexico.

The committee's most prominent task is the seeding of the 65-team tournament, including the selection of the 34 at-large teams.  Smith has served on the committee for three years.  UCLA's Dan Guerrero will chair the committee next season, succeeding Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive.

Still dont understand why everyone in cleveland and pretty much all of Ohio is an Ohio State fan and not an Ohio University supporter? Im not a fan of college athletics, went to Arizona State and Cleveland State, and dont really give a cr@p about either OSU or OU but I find it pretty funny that everyone supports the bigger, more succesfull school, even people who have absolutely no ties to OSU.

Either way, I think this game is going to be great for the city of Cleveland, i just hope it turns out to be a real home game for Toledo instead of majority of the stadium being OSU support.

Kind of answered your own question, no?  As for this being a home game for Toledo, no way.  Clevelander's will mostly support OSU, we are only slightly farther from Columbus than we are from Toledo, and there are more OSU fans total by a huge margin.

Every time i ask someone why they support OSU over OU they never give that answer, its always some other bogus response.

But im hoping the fact that Toledo is selling 58,000 tickets through the school might help make it more of a Toledo crowd, but theres no stopping the tickets ending up in OSU supporters hands.

Its a home game because Toledo is hosting the game.  They decided to move it to CBS to make a boatload of money.

I can answer this.  Im an OU fan over OSU as I am a bobcat...but people have never had any reason to root for OU.  People mostly pick the teams they are going to love at a very young age.  Young kids will root for OSU or a team that perennially wins over a MAC school that has never had a big game in their life.  Also, being a kid and experiencing a game at the horsehoe is probably enough to have most people hooked.  Ill root for the buckeyes over big flashy schools because i want my state to feel alot of pride.

Football: OSU-Toledo tickets to be sold Monday

Tuesday,  July 21, 2009 - 3:02 AM

By Tim May, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

More than 6,000 tickets for Ohio State's game against Toledo in Cleveland Browns Stadium will go on sale at the University of Toledo ticket office at 9 a.m. Monday.  It is classified as a Rockets home game.  The crowd in the 73,000-seat stadium is expected to be decidedly in Ohio State's favor.  The Buckeyes last played a "road game" in Cleveland in 1991, when Northwestern allowed promoters to move a home game to the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium.  Toledo is expected to reap about $4 million from the gate.

More at http://buckeyextra.com/live/content/sports/stories/2009/07/21/Osu07219.ART_ART_07-21-09_C2_UEEHL28.html?sid=101

The game is officially a home game for Toledo

How is this a home game for Toledo?! Last I checked, Cleveland is pretty heavy OSU territory, probably second in the state to Columbus in terms of total OSU fans. I think they need to reverse that home team status...

To call this a home game for Toledo is ridiculous. Playing in Detroit or Ann Arbor would be more of a home game for Toledo than playing in Cleveland. Cleveland is hostile, scarlet-red Ohio State territory.

this is nothing new, in the past notre dame held a few home games at the old municipal stadium too. in fact more ne ohioans may attend notre dame/aspire to attend nd than osu, or it's a fairly close call. whatever, somebody has to be the home team, in the case of this big in-state game they probably just flipped a quarter.

Is seeing this game worth $4,800 to you?

Tickets for the Ohio State football game against Southern California have been sold out for months, but fans could snag some seats for the right price.  How does $4,800 per ticket sound for the most anticipated home game of the year?  That's what the most expensive seats for the Sept. 12 game are going for on the online ticket broker TicketsNow.  The priciest seats on StubHub, another online resale market, cost about $3,500 apiece.  Face value for the tickets is $63.

Just caught this Dispatch video about Terrelle Pryor's huge new Block O tattoo on his right forearm.  Its a brief 41 second video of sports reporters first asking Pryor and then asking Coach Tressel about the tattoo.  Check out Coach Tressel's reaction as he very diplomatically tries to answer whether he likes the new tattoo.  Enjoy.

The video, linked above, has the best view of the Block O tattoo.  I couldn't link a still picture from the video and tried to find a photo online.  Best I could get was from http://palestra.net/blogs/read/23693 - "It looks like the Buckeye star QB went all out on the Block O/Buckeye leaves forearm tattoo (left) which he definitely didn't have at the Spring Game in April (right).  Gotta believe this tattoo is gonna see a lot of TV air time come fall."

Well that works too.  I just want him to excel at school.  I know from first hand experience what it's like to be gifted in a sport and think it can take you to that next level, then something happens, to snatch all that away.

See, I disagree with graduating first.  Professional athletes have such a short career, they should play/make the money while they can.  There's no age limit on going back to school, but there is a limit in terms of age for an athlete's career.

^ Though, being selfish, I want him at OSU until he graduates to continue to play football for us.  Haha.

I pray he develops his passing skills.

I don't as some get hurt and have "career" ending injuries before they even make it to the professional sports ranks.  Thats exactly what happened to my brother.  All he wanted was to be Ozzie Newsome or Clay Matthews and play for the Cleveland Browns.

Third game of the season....he broke his leg, in three places,  damn near exactly like Montana.  He couldn't play football, basketball or run track and now has a metal rod in his leg.  [As the conniving younger brother, I get a kick out of calling him a terrorist at the airport.  he he he he  >:D  He has to be scanned separately.]

Thank God it happened while he was in College and he got an education.

Hell yeah we are.  It's no fun unless there's someone to pick on. I wonder if the OSU vs. SCum spread will 3 td's again......

All in good fun.  But lets keep it civil guys.

The OSU vs. UM name calling got so bad last year that the admins and mods had to step in.  I wasn't a mod last year, but I remember how bad it got.  Now that I'm a mod I don't want to have to clean that stuff up this year.

Just remember that it is just a game.  Have fun.  Go Bucks.

Ohio State will play Navy this Saturday to start the 2009 season.  Some Buckeye fans have come up with an idea to loudly cheer the Navy team when they take the field.  Great idea!  Of course, we still want the Buckeyes to win, but this is a very decent concept for fans to show respect to the armed services and as a tribute to their service to the country.

Ohio State's Take the Field Tribute for Navy

"On Saturday, September 5th over 105,000 Buckeye fans can show our appreciation with a simple, yet powerful gesture…"

"RISE TO YOUR FEET AND CHEER for the US Navy football team when they Take the Field just as loud as you do for Ohio State!"

Congrats to Tyrone Williams from.... it pains me to say this... Shaw HS who recently committed to play for Coach Tressel at OSU.

You must have gone to Heights.  lol

Though I’m not much of a football fan, I would nevertheless like to express my congratulations to incoming freshman/wide receiver Chris Fields—a fellow Painesvillian and high school alumnus (we’re only a few decades years apart in age--lol). Something like this happens only every half-century--literally. As far as I know, last person from my HS to play for the Buckeyes was John Mummey, a running back from the class of 1959—who later went on to the dubious honor to be an assistant coach to the infamous Woody Hayes.

I wish Woody Hayes was coach when I was there, we had Earl - I got fired before the Michigan game - Bruce.

yes, although Woody Hayes did have a little bit of an attitude problem even beyond the field. I worked in the OSU library for a while, and one day he came in to check out a book. He didn't have any ID on him--much less his OSU ID--and the woman behind the circulation desk didn't recognize him (!) and wouldn't allow the transaction. The system was computerized, but obviously not to the extent it would be now to easily identify someone. I guess it turned into a pretty ugly scene--lots of harsh words were exchanged, although I think ultimately Woody Hayes left with the book.

You think that's bad?  Try going to school there when the coach was John - I can't beat Michigan - Cooper.

I was there.  He came in my senior year.  I think the bucks won one or two games that year.  That year is one of the reasons I have mentally blocked out my four years at Ohio State and Columbus.  I'm like Jean Grey...those memories were sent to the deepest portion of my mind.
