^agree with that also.  I can't believe Gene Smith has kept his job this far.  I assumed he'd be canned after they got a new coach hired on.

This recruting class is shaping up rather nicely if I must say so myself :-D, Urban Meyer is a beast on the recruiting scene  8-)

  • 2 weeks later...

Tomorrow is national signing day.  And from the reviews going into it, OSU and Michigan are the class of the Big Ten.  Below is a link to a Columbus Dispatch article that looks at the recruiting rankings for the Big Ten programs.

DISPATCH: Football recruiting: Ohio State, Michigan dominate Big Ten, causing some to wonder if the ‘Big Two’ days are back

Ohio State is ranked third nationally by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.  Michigan is ranked fifth by Rivals.com and fourth by Scout.com.  No other Big Ten program has a top 25 ranking from either organization.

That Urban Meyer was able to put together a recruiting class of that caliber even though they know that there will be no postseason for them their freshman year is nothing short of spectacular.  (I hope he didn't commit any recruiting violations in landing them ...)  I have to admit I was very skeptical of the Meyer hire, but he's living up to his reputation in "football's third season" so far.

I'm sure violations were committed (in fact I hope so--this is the way the game is played and I want our guy to do everything besides rape/murder to keep up with the SEC powers), but I'm also sure that Meyer, unlike his predecessor, will do a better job of covering his tracks.

Oh yeah... ;)

DODSON!  Best announcement ever!  It'll be on youtube soon enough.  Tiger PRIDE!

Here it is.  IMO, much better than that typical tacky wave your hand over the hats thing.....

There's two kids up there with him - Sheldon Gibson (2013) and Marcus Bagley (2014) - who will be big time recruits over the next few years.  Getting Dodson was huge because it could provide that pipeline effect for those other two.

Word is that Gibson is favoring Auburn at this early stage.  Dodson said he's going to try to sway him.  Bagley was a key part of CH's incredible run last season, but I'm not hearing much about his recruitment or how his skills translate to the next level--yet.  I think he's also a very good basketball player.

osu had the 6th best signing day sez espn

^ESPN's recruiting coverage is subpar.  The two tops services have us higher - Rivals (#4) and Scout (#3).

I've heard about his desire to go somewhere south.  I think it will depend on whether he plans to run track also.

I'm no scout, but I like to think I'm fairly good at talent evaluation.  This kid is a player.  He isn't getting the attention now because he is only a sophomore.  But, if you ask me, he was the team's best player last season and that includes Dodson and Gibson.  Bagley was a big time player in big time games.  With all that D1 talent on the field in the playoff game vs. St. Eds, Bagley (as a sophomore) was the best player on that field.  Yes, he is a good basketball player also but his future is on the gridiron.  He has the same effect on a football field that Andy V has had on the court the last two games against the Celtics.  He's just all over the place.

Congrats to Mith Trubinsky (QB - Mentor HS) on receiving an offer from OSU.  A telling sign of the type of offense Meyer wants to run if you ask me....

OSU has also offered James Byrne (OT - St. Ignatius). Byrne's only a sophomore, so it sounds like there is some upper echelon sophomore talent in the Cleveland area.

"Ohio State loses top recruit due to sex offender"

Basically he (recruit) took a photo with a fan on campus who happened to be a sex offender and it got blown up on twitter.  Add in a ridiculous quote from the father that his son apparently needs to be suprervised 24/7 then bury the information saying that this dude isn't actually affiliated with the university nor was he granted any kind of access by the university.  Sensationalism at it's best.

What is this kid, 12?  Come on OSU cannot screen every damn person.  I think a big kid like that can take care of himself!  The father needs to cut the apron strings!

Right, it's annoying because it had nothing to do with anything Ohio State did or did not do while the young man was visiting.  It's something that could have happened anywhere...any probably does.  But since this happened at Ohio State, ESPN will try to blow it up into a national scandal.

Game day...LET'S GO BUCKEYES!

The 2012 season begins today!  And it's probably fair to say that the Buckeye Nation has never looked upon an upcoming season with such a combination of anticipation and trepidation.  Nevertheless, the Buckeyes start the season ranked #18 in the preseason AP poll.

Let's look at some possible positives:

- New head coach Urban Meyer

- Virtually all new coaching staff with a top notch pedigree

- Relatively weak pre-Big Ten schedule (UCF next week looks like the toughest test)

- 8 of the 12 games are at home

- Lots of returning starters from last year's defense

- New look spread offense led by sophomore Braxton Miller

Let's look at some possible negatives:

- No postseason bowl due to NCAA suspension this year

- Relatively strong Big Ten schedule (at Mich St - Nebraska - at Wisconsin - Michigan). All those teams are ranked above OSU in the AP preseason poll.

- Implementing a new coaching style with returning players.

- Returning players at new positions. Stoneburner moves from TE to WR. Boren moves from FB to RB. (Although if these moves work, you can move this into the positive list.)

In any event, it's time to stop speculating and begin the 2012 season for the Buckeyes.  And the season's journey begins today at noon when they play Miami (Ohio) in the Shoe.  If nothing else, it looks like it'll be fun.  GO BUCKS!!!

After a slow start, Urban Meyer's debut at Ohio State ended with a 56-10 win over Miami (Ohio).  It took the entire first quarter for the new-look Buckeye offense to get going.  But once it did, the Buckeyes steamrolled the visiting RedHawks.

ESPN Game Recap: Ohio State 56 - Miami (OH) 10

Not a bad start to the season.

A few observations:

- We have some freshmeat on the D-Line - Noah Spence #8, Adolphus Washington #92, and Tommy Schutt #90 - who are going to give us that added depth up front that we really lacked last year.  Add in the return of Nathan Williams and our D-Line is much improved from what was a very good, but top-heavy group last year.

- For the 1st quarter, Braxton looked like the Braxton of last year.  But from then on, he looked damn good.  Still doesn't have the best accuracy and doesn't throw a tight spiral.

- We have a very athletic group of WRs, but I'm not sure that we have that true game-breaker.  Philly Brown would probably disagree with me and I like his confidence to fill that role.

- The DBs are having trouble adjusting to playing off the line.  That's how we used to play when Tress first was hired at OSU, but then every team started running the spread against us and we moved our DBs up to jam at the line and help the LBs on the underneath routes.

- The O-Line is green and it shows.  Same with the LBs although I'm still #1 in the Ryan Shazier fanclub

Week 2 was alot like Week 1 for the Buckeyes - except against a stronger opponent in UCF.  The game was tied 10-10 halfway though the second quarter.  Then OSU scored three unanswered TD's en route to a 31-16 victory.  Braxton Miller leads the way with 18-24, 155 yds, 1TD passing and with 27 carries for 141 yds and 3TD's rushing.

ESPN Box Score: (#14) Ohio St 31 - UCF 16

UCF is a decent team, so I'm happy with the result.  But I'm also concerned with how much Braxton is carrying the ball (and as a result, taking hits).

Should be interesting to see how many carries Braxton gets against Cal today.  I would guess less than the 27 he had against UCF.  Jordan Hall is supposed to return after missing the first two games with a foot injury.

Plus backup RB Carlos Hyde got injured early in the UCF game and never returned.  This left OSU with third-string freshman Bri'onte Dunn as their primary RB against UCF.  Apparently they didn't feel too confident giving the ball to Dunn.

Urban revitalization gets a big scare from California.

ESPN Box Score: (#12) Ohio St 35 - Cal 28

Miller has not improved his passing game this off season the way I hoped.  The last big scoring play when OSU receiver was wide open, Miller totally underthrew him & almost put it out of bounds.  Drive before that when hit the WR inside the 5, the receiver had to dive to make the catch.  If Miller had hit him in stride (he was open) he could have gone in for the TD.  The interception late was terrible.  He had all kinds of time on that play but missed the open man down under and the open man above him...

To be fair, that last TD pass was thrown while Braxton was sprinting toward the sideline.  But I do see your point.  Miller needs to improve his accuracy if the Buckeyes are to have a balanced offense.  Although there's no need to improve his running skills - that 55 yard TD scramble in the first quarter was just amazing.

I do wonder about the OSU defense, which was supposed to be the strength of the team.  The Cal QB had a great game, with the exception of that last INT.  And RB Brendan Bigelow's speed just torched our defense on those 81-yd and 59-yd TD runs.

It was good to see Jake Stoneburner get more involved in the offense with 2 TD catches and Devin Smith continues to impress, also with 2 TD catches.

We probably won't learn much more about the Buckeyes during next week's UAB game.  We likely won't learn how good this team is until the following week playing at Michigan State.  Although MSU just took a downgrade losing at home to Notre Dame.

OSU wins over UAB.  But it was U-G-L-Y !!!

ESPN Box Score: (#16) OSU 29 - UAB 15

isnt that a division II team? yikes.

Nah, but they always seemed to me like they were one. They're Conference USA.

Tough game.  Tough win at East Lansing.

ESPN Box Score: (#14) OSU 17 - (#20) MSU 16

QB Braxton Miller goes out with an injury in the first and fourth quarters but returns to lead the Buckeyes to win with 179 passing yards and 136 rushing yards.  RB Jordan Hall goes out with a knee injury in the second quarter and does not return after scoring OSU's first TD.  The Buckeye defense bottles up Bell for only 45 yards.

What ever happened to the Black Shirts and the Silver Bullets?  That was crazy last night.

Greg Doyle: "Ohio State is the class of the conference."  I'm ready to see tOSU abuse the rest of the conference.....they will wish Gentleman Jim was still the coach.

Man that was a great game.  QB Braxton Miller with 127 passing yards & 1 passing TD plus 186 rushing yards & 1 rushing TD.  RB Carlos Hyde with 140 rushing yards and 4 TD's.

ESPN Box Score: (#12) OSU 63 - (#21) Nebraska 38

Buckeyes are now #8 in the AP.

^I just learned today that the 101 combined points scored in the OSU-Nebraska game was the second highest point total in Ohio Stadium history.  What was the highest point total?  OSU 83 - Iowa 21 on October 28, 1950.

Players will be able to ride their sky cycles to the game while the coaches navigate the stadium on hoverboards.

I love watching the Big Ten Network. It's the only place where you can see television commercial about farming equipment! LOL

OSU 52, Indiana 49

This is two 101-point games for Ohio State in a row.

That 49 points was Indiana's highest point total all season, including their games against those perennial powerhouses Indiana State, UMass, and Ball State.  The ghosts of Marc Dantonio's 2002 defense are not amused and demand blood sacrifices.  I know we're having injury problems, but even taking those into account, this was ridiculous.

Special teams has been mostly atrocious, too, with them having punts blocked and allowing for long returns.  For better or worse, things have completely flip-flopped from the Tressel years.

When I was a kid, tons of commercials during sports and the news were about farming-related products here in Columbus. And we don't have a daily farm report during the noon news any more.

That game was . . . something.  No problem with the offense.  But the defense had issues, even before needing Zach Boren to play linebacker in this game!  The final score was a bit misleading with Indiana's final 15 points coming with less than 2 minutes left due to their recovered on-side kick.  But still.

But a win's a win to the AP.  OSU moves up to 7th.

Mostly true about special teams, but don't forget that we also blocked a punt and recovered it in the endzone for a TD ... a much-needed score, given our margin of victory.
