No way should the Buckeyes have retained their high rank after Braxton went down. The college rankings are idiotic.

After Braxton went down, after Carols Hyde went to the NFL, after the entire O-Line was replaced...

I wouldn't call it a dumpster fire.  Oregon is going to be a national title contender and MSU played them tight for 3 quarters, in Oregon.  MSU might still run the table and go to a great bowl game.  Michigan got smoked but I expect Notre Dame to be a national contender as well.  Let's keep things in perspective

^ Yeah we just don't know how good these other teams are yet.

It was a dumpster fire.  And here's the perspective.  The Big Ten had an opportunity to prove themselves against quality non-conference opponents.  And including Wisconsin's loss to LSU on opening week, they've gone 0-4.  The Big Ten will get no consideration for the final four spots in the playoff this year.  Beating other Big Ten teams won't help them.

I've been a defender of the Big Ten up to now.  But they can't be defended this year.

:x

My brother-in-law is VaTech alum and a huge fan of their football team.  I haven't heard from him yet.  Not looking forward to the next family get-together.

Outside of the Florida national title game, that might have been one of the worst played/executed OSU football games I have ever seen.

People were leaving the game party I was at during halftime; it was that bad. I left too.

What's the deal with the lack of 'volume' at the Shoe?  Despite its size, it is not known as that much of an intimidating place to play...... certainly not like Happy Valley or other notoriously loud stadiums.  Is it the acoustics?  A more tame fan base?  The ESPN announcers even mentioned that the decibel levels were surprisingly low.

The 'Shoe does have a lot of nooks and crannies.

Whoopie.  OSU beat Kent State 66-0.

Also, that "tough" VaTech team lost to East Carolina.

Ugh.  Yeah, which means OSU likely lost to a team that will fall right back out of the rankings and we'll have a loss to an unranked team following us around.  And the rest of the Big Ten performed poorly enough in the non-league season that, with the exception of Michigan State, we don't really have a lot of points we can pick up in league play (and MSU still lost to Oregon, but Oregon looks seriously legit so far).

hey whaddayaknow bgsu beat indiana. you're welcome!

^^Without our best player on offense (Miller) and arguably our best player on defense (Spence), I wouldn't want us playing in the playoffs.

This is the worst Buckeye pass defense I have ever seen.  I don't get it.  It's not due to a lack of talent.  A little green, I suppose.  It might be schematic.  Poor LB play, which we've had IMO, can also affect coverage by causing the safeties to move up a few steps

Team not gelling perhaps?

OSU spotted UC 7 points, then racked up 30 unanswered points.  It looked like OSU would get more unanswered points until a fumble.  Then UC put together two unanswered TD drives.  UC got as close as 5 in the 3rd quarter, until OSU got the final 17 points of game to win 50-28.

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=400547674

Like Hts was saying about the pass defense, those 3 long TD passes kept UC in the game.  If the OSU offense wasn't better, it might have been closer.  But the offense was dominant in this game: 710 total yds (380 rushing, 330 passing), 45 first downs(!), 42 minutes of possession.  Barrett had another solid game at QB.  Ezekiel Elliott really took a step forward at RB.  And our long wait for Dontre Wilson to emerge as a playmaker might be over.

That was Schlegel, who played LB along with Hawk and Carpenter.

It's difficult to put a finger on a single cause.  We are definitely 'green' in the defensive backfield, which is leading to some confusion in coverage.  The current team also plays a more aggressive form of coverage than Tressel's "bend but don't break" philosophy.  We also have to admit that we have been very spoiled over the past 15 or so years of Buckeye football with no shortage of great/elite DBs, including but not limited to Antoine Winfield, Shawn Springs, Chris Gamble, Bradley Roby, Nate Clements, Mike Doss, Damon Moore, Donte Whitner, Ahmad Plummer, Dustin Fox, Derrick Ross, Donnie Nickey, Will Allen, Ashton Youboty, Kurt Coleman, and Chimdi Chekwa.  The DBs has always been one of our strengths and we are not used to not having the star power back there....... not to mention this appears to be a down year at LB for use too.

The Dispatch had an awesome freeze-frame of the moment just before the fan gets body-slammed by Schlegel.  BTW, Schlegel is the strength coach for the team.  Probably the last guy you'd want body-slamming you!

with all the losses to top 25 teams, I expect OSU to get back into the top 25.  JT Barrett seems to be growing by leaps & bounds each week.  Looked really polished today, making some really phenomenal throws, great timing with receivers.  Might be some interesting discussion next year on who should start between him & Braxton Miller...

Weren't they in the top 25 heading into that game?  I though they were #20, to be exact

Hts121[/member]  Yes they are No. 20.  Not sure why gottaplan[/member] thinks/thought the Bucs were not in the top 25.

From the NCAA Football thread:

Ranked teams  2, 3, 4, 6, 8,14, 15, 16, 17, 18 & 19 lost on Saturday.

Realistically, Ohio State should move up to #14.  I don't see any of the top 10 teams dropping so far in the rankings that Ohio State passes them.

Pretty close.  OSU is ranked #15 going into their second and final bye week.

Three teams ranked ahead of OSU still have to play Auburn.

They keep getting better.  Meyer has made a few key adjustments IMO.  One thing he has done has to play Michael Thomas over Devin Smith.  Smith drives me nuts.  He is more worried about looking 'pretty' than he is about the game.  He doesn't block downfield well and doesn't run good routes outside of the fly.  Thomas is quickly becoming our #1 WR.  Also, as I urged at the start of the season, Raekwon McMillan is getting the nod for more PT ahead of Curtis Grant...... and he is really getting after it.  Also, it seems as if Barrett and Elliot are starting to get a good rhythm going on the zone read option.  Elliot is a player.

No game this weekend.  But I did come across this interesting interactive map from the New York Times about fan support for college football teams at http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/03/upshot/ncaa-football-fan-map.html.

The U.S. map at the article used facebook "likes" to estimate strength of fan support for 84 teams.  Within that article they highlighted certain areas of the country.  Here's the map and text for their highlighted section on Ohio:

THE University in Ohio

Ohio is a populous state but has only one football program in the Big 5 conferences, so it makes sense that Ohio State has the plurality of fans in every single Ohio ZIP code.  (Apologies to the Cincinnati Bearcats, Akron Zips and Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, among others.)  Not only that: Ohio State claims territory in most of its neighboring states, including Indiana, Pennsylvania and — gasp — Michigan.

ncaa-fb-ohio.png

OSU is massive in Cincinnati, despite the strong presence of UC and UK fans.

Marshall doesn't get to claim much territory for itself does it? Cabell and Wayne Counties are about it.

^What's even more impressive is that IU and Purdue are basically second fiddle in Indiana compared to a much smaller university...Notre Dame.  Oh, and look at that little stretch of Monroe County, Michigan rooting for the Buckeyes!

Rolling, rolling, rolling over Rutgers 56-17.

Since that week two loss to VaTech: OSU is 4-0 (224 PF vs. 69 PA) and VaTech is 2-3.

Anyway we can replay that game?

In greater Cincy it is

1) UC

2) UK

3) OSU

and Bengals / Reds ahead of all.

^ Then you might want to get your facebook friends to "like" UC and UK.  Because according to the current facebook data, OSU's #1 in Cincy for CFB.

I don't want to do anything. Facebook likes really? That is the scientific data being used here, lol. Ask any OSU fan where they have the smallest base of fans in the state and they will tell SW Ohio, and then secondly NW Ohio around Toledo where there is a base of Michigan fans.

LOL - Didn't you read this thread before you posted?

UC and UK certainly are more popular around Cincy in basketball.

I wouldn't say SW Ohio.  Dayton area is certainly VERY OSU.  I'm with GCrites80s.  In basketball, the Cincinnati area is UC/Xavier/UK.  As far as football, I've seen QUITE a few OSU support in Cincinnati (as that Facebook map indicates) as UC has had ups and downs throughout the years.

Although I didn't go to either school, I have pretty deep attachments and connections to both UC and OSU.  For basically my entire family, it has always been OSU football and UC basketball.  Even my mom (OSU alum) and sister (current OSU student) are bigger fans of the Bearcats when it comes to basketball.  For football, it's just the opposite.  UC football wasn't even 'a thing' until like 5 years ago.  If anything, I think Cincinnati might be slightly more apathetic when it comes to college football than the rest of the state.  It makes sense, really.  UC football has never done much, Xavier doesn't have a football team, UK football is tragic.  We have the Bengals, and for some (sadly, a lot) high school football is really popular in Cincinnati.  That said, I think OSU is the program with the largest fan base in the area for college football.

For basketball, UC and Xavier both have very strong and loyal followings.  I don't think there are that many UK fans in Ohio, but it is instantly noticeable as soon as you cross the river.  UK definitely is the strongest fan base in the KY portion of the metro. I believe UD also has a pretty large and passionate fan base in Dayton.  It would make sense that SW Ohio would be lesser OSU basketball fans than other parts of the state that don't have successful/historical collegiate programs within the region.

Speaking of LBs, I'm glad that the coaching staff finality put the upperclassmen favoritism aside and came to the realization that true freshman Raekwon McMillian is an absolute beast....... he needs to stay on the field for every snap.

Totally agree.  McMillan, Lee and Perry make a strong trio of LB's.

I'm not a huge Josh Perry fan.  Very strong, but he seems a little stiff.  His snaps should be limited unless we are playing smash-mouth teams like Wisconsin and Iowa.  Lee is the kind of the opposite.  He is great in coverage and rushing the passer, but not so great at holding the point of attack.  I do, however, see the potential in Lee to become a 3-down LB.

While this is indeed partially true (and indeed as has been pointed out, Dayton is overwhelmingly in support of OSU), the question was whether or not OSU had more fans in Cincinnati than any other team. And based on the data presented, and other data I've seen over the years, I do think it's safe to say that a plurality of college football fans in Cincinnati pull for the Buckeyes.

Hopefully Urban gives Baker a chance to tryout at running back. I believe that's part of the reason why he chose Florida to begin with.

Buckeyes got themselves in a dog fight with Penn State right now.  Hope they can pull it out.

Way too close for comfort, but it's always been tough for the Buckeyes to win at Penn State, especially at night.

Way too close for comfort

Really was.  Although a 31-24 double OT thriller might seem entertaining, it wasn't what Buckeye Nation was expecting after going into halftime up 17-0!

The team and the game really seemed to rise or fall based on the play of J.T. Barrett.  Great in the first half - bad in the second half - very good in the OT's.  J.T. did get a knee sprain just before halftime.  Don't know if that affected his pick 6 throw to start out the third quarter (probably not, PSU had a sneaky zone blitz called on that play).  But Barrett did very little running in the second half and the offense sputtered.  When Barrett ran in the OT's, the offense picked it back up.

I think the ebb & flow of momentum is more about the defense than JT Barrett.
