The Buckeyes resume Big Ten play against Rutgers in Piscataway on Saturday.  With Stroud's nagging shoulder and McCord's decent performance against Akron, is a QB controversy brewing?  Coach Day says no.  He expects Stroud to resume at starting QB after resting his shoulder:

Okay then, so how about the defense.  Any more changes in store?  And who will be making the play calls?  According to secondary coach (and de facto DC) Matt Barnes; "maybe" and "it's a group effort":

Whoever starts at QB tomorrow (likely Stroud) will face one of the best defenses in the country from Rutgers.  Greg Schiano is back as head coach for a second stint, after he left in 2012 to coach Tamp Bay in the NFL for two seasons and then be the DC under Urban Meyer at OSU for three seasons.

After an underwhelming 2020 pandemic season, Schiano has Rutgers better than expected in 2021.  They've had two blowout home wins against weaker opponents (Temple and Delaware) and a good road win against a stronger opponent (Syracuse) before giving Michigan a scare in the Big House last weekend with a 20-13 loss.  Because of that, Ohio State is only a 15-point favorite.

Rutgers has a great defense but a subpar offense.  If Rutgers can make this a low-scoring grind-it-out game, Rutgers might have a chance for an upset.  But if the Buckeyes offense can connect on some big plays and get rolling, it could be a long night for the Scarlet Knights.

2021 SEASON - GAME 5:  OHIO STATE 52- 13 RUTGERS

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2021/10/125509/ohio-state-obliterates-rutgers-52-13-in-most-impressive-performance-of-2021-season-to-date

With Rutgers having the 7th-best defense in the country thru its first four games, you kinda expected the Buckeye offense to struggle.  But that didn't happen.  The Buckeyes offense scored on their first six possessions of the game (5 TD's & 1 FG) and the defense added a pick-6 for another touchdown to take a 45-6 lead into halftime and ultimately win the game 52-13.

CJ Stroud looked much better after his week off - going 17-23 for 330 yards and 5 TD's.  Five-star true freshman TreVeyon Henderson had an impressive 44-yd TD run on OSU's first drive but ended up with only 8 carries for 71 yards after being sidelined with a minor injury early in the second quarter.  A trio of RB's finished out the game to combine for 208 rushing yards.  Stroud was replaced by McCord before the end of the third quarter and Miller replaced McCord midway in the fourth.

The defense was nearly as good, holding Rutgers to only one TD thru the first three quarters and only allowing a second TD late in the fourth with mostly backups on the field.  The secondary grabbed 3 INT's on the night.  The only area of concern was that the defense only recorded one sack on the night.

After the game, Coach Day said Stroud's shoulder feels fine and that Henderson was okay and could have played in the second half if he was needed.

2021 SEASON - GAME 6:  OHIO STATE 66 - 17 MARYLAND

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2021/10/125693/ohio-state-picks-apart-maryland-66-17-for-third-straight-blowout-win

The Buckeyes have their mojo back.  Especially CJ Stroud and the offense.  The Buckeye offense was quite literally unstoppable in the first half - scoring TD's on their first five drives and only being stopped by taking a knee to end the half(!)  Even in the second half, the offense scored TD's on next three drives, and a FG on the next drive, before a 3-and-out on their final drive with all backups.

Stroud went 24-33 for 406 passing yards with 5 TD's and 0 INT in three quarters of play before being replaced by McCord and Miller in the fourth quarter.  TreVeyon Henderson showed no ill effects from the minor injury he picked up in the Rutgers game with 16 carries for 102 yards and 2 rushing TD's plus 4 receptions for 67 yards and one receiving TD.  Olave had 120 receiving yards with 2 TD's and Wilson had 84 receiving yards with 2 TD's.

The improving Buckeye defense wasn't "lights-out" dominant.  But after giving up 10 points in the first half, they held Maryland to 7 in the second half.  They also forced 2 INT's, the last one a Pick-6 that ended the scoring in the fourth quarter.  This was the fourth straight game with a Pick-6 for Ohio State(!)

Overall, an outstanding way to enter their bye week.

^ And if that blowout win wasn't enough to bring joy to a Buckeye fans heart, the Ohio State University Marching Band paid homage to Canadian rock band Rush with an outstanding halftime show:

The Buckeyes are really rolling now.  The offense had six TD's on their six drives in the first half of yesterday's game.  A defensive safety added two more points for a commanding 44-7 lead at halftime.

Stroud looked steady with 21-28 for 266 yards and 4 TD's.  TreVeyon Henderson had 2 rushing TD's and 1 receiving TD and is close to breaking some more freshman RB records.  Henderson already broke Archie Griffin's freshman single game record when he ran for 277 yards against Tulsa.  Now, he has 14 total touchdowns for the season - just four shy of tying Maurice Clarett’s 18 scores during the Buckeyes’ national championship-winning 2002 season.  Henderson’s 11 rushing touchdowns are also just five fewer than Clarett’s 16 in that same season, another freshman record, and there are still five games remaining in Ohio State’s regular season.

2021 SEASON - GAME 8:  OHIO STATE 33 - 24 PENN STATE

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2021/10/126263/ohio-state-grinds-out-33-24-win-in-another-four-quarter-battle-with-penn-state

The Buckeyes ground out a win over a tough ranked Penn State team in Ohio Stadium last night.  Penn State's defense held the Buckeye offense in check for most of the first half.  But a 38-yd TD pass to Olave late in the second quarter put OSU up 10-7.  Then on the next PSU possession, the Buckeyes got a strip sack fumble that was run back for a Big Man TD(!)

The Buckeyes never trailed the rest of the game.  But PSU kept it close holding the Buckeyes to FG's instead of TD's in the red zone during the second half.  PSU's QB Sean Clifford - who was questionable coming into this game - had a great performance with 35-52 for 361 yards.  But PSU got nothing from their running attack.

OSU got another quality performance from C.J. Stroud with 22-34 for 305 yards and 1 TD.  He was assisted by TreVeyon Henderson with 152 rushing yards and 1 TD on 28 carries.

Another amazing halftime show from TBDBITL.  Those super complex formations are insane(!)

2021 SEASON - GAME 9:  OHIO STATE 26 - 17 NEBRASKA

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2021/11/126501/ohio-state-survives-scare-in-lincoln-defeating-nebraska-26-17

In what has become a hallmark of the Frost/Martinez era at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers gave a ranked team an upset scare, only to fall short.  The Buckeyes never got their running game in sync - only 90 total rushing yards - so the offensive burden fell on the arm of CJ Stroud.

Stroud had his highlights with 36-54 for 405 yards and 2 passing TD's - and had his lowlights with two INT's.  OSU was without leading receiver Garrett Wilson.  But #3 WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba stepped up with a school-record 15 receptions for 240 yards and 1 TD.

The Buckeye offense had the same problem they had in the Penn State game.  They moved the ball well but finished more drives with FG's then TD's to keep Nebraska in the game during the second half.  But the defense played pretty well, holding Nebraska to 361 total yards, getting five sacks and finishing the game with an interception.

Survive and advance.

Not sure turning the offensive line into "four tackles and a center" was the best idea, in hindsight.  Run up the score on the cupcakes but they struggle against any D that's average or better it appears.

2021 SEASON - GAME 10:  OHIO STATE 59 - 31 PURDUE

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2021/11/126746/ohio-state-rolls-over-purdue-59-31-as-buckeye-offense-regains-elite-form

#19-ranked Purdue had upset two Top-5 teams this year - but the Buckeyes made such they wouldn't get a third upset today.  The Buckeyes offense was unstoppable in the first half, scoring TD's on their first six drives and a FG on the final drive.  That offensive dominance plus two fumbles recovered, gave the Buckeyes a 45-17 halftime lead.

CJ Stroud was 31-38 for 361 passing yards and 5 passing TD's.  Jaxon Smith-Njigba (or JSN as he is now being called) caught 9 for 139 yards and a TD.  Olave caught 9 for 85 yards and a TD - and Garrett Wilson returned to the lineup and had 10 catches for 126 yards, 3 receiving TD's plus a 51-yard rushing TD(!)

The Buckeyes got 263 rushing yards to go along with their 361 passing yards.  Starting RB Henderson had 13 carries for 98 yards and 2 rushing TD's - including a key 57-yard TD run at the end of the first quarter.  Backup Williams ended up with 14 carries for 117 yards to close out the game in the second half.

Michigan State and Michigan await to finish out the Big Ten regular-season.

This is looking like a great pick by Corso.  MSU's weakness was their pass defense and the Buckeyes torched them with 241 passing yards and three TD passes of 23, 77, & 43 yards - all in the first quarter(!)  Up 21-0 and starting the second quarter with the ball on the MSU 16.

This is a really dominating performance today.

Wow!!
need to do this next week too

Olave would look good in a Browns  uniform.

49-0 at halftime(!)

-- Stroud with 29 of 31, 393 passing yards and 6 passing TD's - IN THE FIRST HALF(!)

-- 500 total yards to 116 for MSU at halftime

-- The Buckeyes had 7 TD's in their first seven drives of the first half - and their 8th was a kneel-down(!)

What great timing for reports earlier this week for MSU's HC Mel Tucker to get a 10-year, $95 million contract.  Because he really needs to be paid more than Ryan Day - LOL.

It was over by halftime.  C.J. Stroud completed 32 of 35 passes for 432 yards and a school record-tying six touchdowns in just over a half of play while Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Garrett Wilson all topped 100 receiving yards and combined for five touchdown catches.  The Buckeyes had 500 total yards at halftime and finished with 655.

Master Teague finished his OSU career on a high note with 95 rushing yards and the final TD in the game.  Super-recruit Quinn Ewers even got his first game-play in the final minute.

Almost as impressive as the offensive display was the defense holding MSU to 224 total yards and holding Heisman-hopeful RB Kenneth Walker to 25 rushing yards(!)

Now it's on to The Big House for The Game 🏈

The Game will be a Top 5 showdown - #2 Ohio State at #5 Michigan.

This is the 20th anniversary of Tressel's first game against Michigan.  The Dispatch did a profile on that game, calling it the game that changed the rivalry:

https://www.dispatch.com/in-depth/sports/2021/11/24/ohio-state-football-michigan-2001-jim-tressel-when-rivalry-changed/8637902002/

The Buckeyes won that game and have won 17 of 19 games since then (including that one).  Prior to Tressel's first game against Michigan, HC John Cooper had gone an embarrassing 2-10-1 in The Game.

Adding to the story of Tressel's first Michigan game was the famous impromptu address he made when he was introduced at the halftime of a men’s basketball game on Jan. 18, 2001.  He was handed a microphone on the floor of Value City Arena and said "I can assure you that you will be proud of our young people, in the classroom, in the community and, most especially, in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on the football field.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

2-10-1 -- I remember those numbers well. So many of those games were grinders. And in the years Cooper did win they were during seasons that didn't matter.

Welp, I guess Michigan had to win The Game again eventually.  Ohio State suffers its first loss to Michigan in 10 years as the Wolverines rushed for six touchdowns to defeat the Buckeyes, 42-27.  The Wolverines took control of the game in the second half with a grinding running attack for 297 yards and 6 rushing TD's.  When the Buckeyes mounted their comeback in the fourth quarter, the Michigan ground game ground down the clock to closeout the win.

Stroud finished with 394 passing yards and 2 passing TD's.  But OSU rushers only had 64 yards.  Michigan's air attack wasn't much with only 190 yards and 1 INT.  But their nearly 300 yards on the ground and a defense that prevented any big plays from the OSU offense won The Game for them.

2021 SEASON - GAME 12:  OHIO STATE 27 - 42 MICHIGAN

Disappointing, but not surprising.  I don't think we faced any big running teams this year, and with our passing offense we got ahead early so teams quickly went away from running the ball.  While there was a lot of emphasis on defensive failings this morning (as after Oregon), I was most disappointed in the O-line play -- penalties and lack of push on run plays were devastating.

I've been worried about our run game all year.  Particularly inside the 10-yard line -- this was not a new problem.  If we had converted those two field-goal drives to touchdowns we would've tied Michigan late in the game. We seemed to have been using the passing game to open up the run game rather than the reverse.  It seemed like we got a lot of run yards in the second half in many games, after the game was already in hand.

I hated watching the old Woody Hayes offenses, but I'm a strong believer in putting a lot of emphasis on the run early because it wears down the defense and means a slower pass rush in the second half.  Maybe our O-line just isn't good enough, or RPO plays slow down the O-line push, or we just gave up on the run game too early yesterday.

Michigan seemed to be riding their fans' enthusiasm and running downhill all game, playing above their average.  Congrats to Michigan and best of luck in the championship and playoffs.  Looking forward to returning the favor next year -- here's hoping they come to Columbus undefeated.

Despite all their faults, the Buckeyes will not be a team that anyone will want to face in a bowl game.  Looking forward to a good matchup on New Year's Day.  Auburn?  Oregon rematch?  Notre Dame?

I think everyone suspected Michigan would be able to pound the ball on the ground...  but OSU's gameplan has been to score quickly and force teams to become one-dimensional.  That never happened.  OSU has relied on the big play all season to bail them out.  They never got it against Michigan.  I went back & rewatched and could only find TWO plays where Stroud threw the ball downfield 30 yards or more.  When you have NFL level receivers and you get them in 1:1 coverage, which they frequently did, you gotta put the ball up and let your guy make a play.  Doing so keeps the defense honest.  Michigan was crowding the line bigtime.  8 or 9 guys within 8 yards of the line.  Very little respect for the deep ball and we never punished them.  The passes Stroud was making were all comeback or crossing routes underneath.  Nothing deep up the middle or down the sideline.  Very odd.  Seemed like maybe he was just being too conservative.

Have to mention the penalties too.  6 penalties on the offensive line I think for holding or false starts.  another 4 for other things.

Bottom line, Michigan came to play.  They looked hungry.  OSU did not.

Good observation, but I think the effective pass rush early cut the number of long-ball plays called.  But hitting just one or two more, particularly early, might have made a big difference.

It's tough for any team to stay "up" for a bunch of big games in a row.  Penn State, Michigan State, and then out of gas for Michigan.

Michigan played better than usual and Ohio State played worse than usual.  Even so, the game was close enough that if they played again it wouldn't take much difference in play to flip the score.

Michigan is already providing a lot of bulletin board material for next year with Harbaugh's "third base" comments and the offensive coordinator's "They're not a tough team."  Looking forward to next year.

Michigan's pass rush was legit, everyone knew it would be, but Stroud still had time.  you only need 3 seconds to throw a 40 yard deep ball.  He had that long.

I think OSU is somewhat like Alabama these days in that we've become a victim of our own success....  our recruiting is so loaded with 5 star prospects, they are lookign to the NFL shortly after earning a starting spot their sophomore year.  The defense this year was very young.   Michigan by comparison has not had that problem as of late.

I don't think we've had a problem of guys looking ahead to the NFL, although I do agree that the team is pretty young because a lot of guys move on after their junior year. The biggest example of that is that there was only one starter on this team who had played against Michigan!  That had to be a factor.

The defense never quite put together a complete package this year.  I think their stats look better than they should because the offense scored early and opponents abandoned the run game and quickly became one-dimensional and much easier to defend.  Thankfully, there's pretty wide acceptance that the defense did not meet expectations this year, and I expect we'll see some offseason changes in the defensive coaching staff.

This team seems to be very "team first" without any egos or superstars.  The wide receivers, for example, have been a very tight group despite the strong potential for egos and competition for playing time.

Let's see how they bounce back for the bowl game.  Hopefully we see some evidence of shoring up their weaknesses and how they react to the loss -- do they come out hungry to win.

Quinn Ewers, we hardly knew ye.  Ewers' announcement that he will transfer is not that surprising.  With the emergence of C.J. Stroud as a top-notch starting QB - who this week was named the Big Ten's offensive player of the year, quarterback of the year and freshman of the year for 2021, the first-ever to sweep all three awards - Ewers was not going to be a starting QB for the Buckeyes in 2022.

So Ewers will be continuing his college football career closer to home - initial reports are Texas, Texas A&M or Texas Tech - presumably with an eye on competing for a starting job in 2022 rather than competing for the backup job at Ohio State.

I question the short sighted decision making process on his end. leaving HS a year early to cash in on the short term NIL deals. While nice, those could have been more lucrative down the line. Furthermore, while immensely talented, there are a lot of talented QB's around who never develop to their potential

Is sitting for another year really going to hurt him that much or would developing his talents with one of the best QB rooms around be better for him? If his goal is to start in the Fall, is that guaranteed going into a new system? Certainly at Texas that seems like a possibiliyt since they are bare in the QB room but nothing is a guarantee. It just seems like his short term decision making may be detrimental to his long term growth.

In today's CFB landscape, talented QB's don't have to wait if they don't want to.  It's a classic "betting on yourself" play to become a starter as soon as possible, and gain exposure to the NFL.  Transferring worked out pretty well for Joe Burrow and Justin Fields.

I get it, but Burrow gave it a legitimate shot to try and win the job. I agree fields is a better example but it seems like ewers may be thinking too short term instead of the long game

I really don't think we need to worry about the future of Quinn Ewers.

$1.4 million (reportedly)

Every year can't "The Year", even for the Buckeyes.  So the 6th-ranked Ohio State will play the 11th-ranked Utah Utes in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.  Not a bad consolation prize.

I thought this would be the first time Ohio State played Utah, but they had one previous matchup in 1986, when the Buckeyes won a regular season game over Utah 64-6. (Utah is better this time)  But this rare game against Utah does allow me to break out "the two utes" clip from My Cousin Vinny:

Really big hire for the Buckeyes:

OHIO STATE HIRING OKLAHOMA STATE’S JIM KNOWLES AS NEW DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Ohio State has hired the architect of one of college football’s top defenses as its new defensive coordinator.  Jim Knowles, who was a finalist for this year’s Broyles Award after leading an Oklahoma State defense that ranks third in the nation in yards allowed per game (278.4) and eighth in the Football Bowl Subdivision in points allowed per game (16.8) this season, is leaving the Cowboys to become the new leader of the Buckeyes’ defense.

Knowles, who has been Oklahoma State’s defensive coordinator since 2018, could be exactly what the doctor ordered for an Ohio State defense that’s been ailing since Jeff Hafley left the program after the 2019 season.  Oklahoma State’s defense steadily improved over the course of his tenure to become one of college football’s top units for the 2021 season at a school that isn’t known for elite defensive play.

Knowles will officially become Ohio State’s defensive coordinator on Jan. 2.  Ohio State’s current staff of assistant coaches will continue to coach the team through the Rose Bowl.

17 of Ohio State's 19 commits signed with the Buckeyes today.  Gabe Powers, a four-star linebacker, won't sign until Friday so he can do it with a special ceremony in the Marysville community.  The only downer was a four-star cornerback from Texas decided to flip from OSU to Texas on this early signing day.

Otherwise it was great news for Buckeye fans.  The 2022 recruiting class is ranked 4th in the nation behind Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia.  However, the Buckeyes got lowered in the overall rankings because they only had 18 recruits versus 25, 24 and 27 recruits for the teams ranked ahead of them.   But the quality of the 18 recruits for OSU is top-notch.  If you ranked the schools by player ratings, OSU would be virtually tied with Texas A&M for 2nd and only behind Alabama.

Above is the overall school rankings and the individual rankings for each recruit.  The 18-player recruiting class is led by two five-star recruits from Ohio:  #2 in the nation LB C.J. Hicks from Dayton and #1 in the nation safety Sonny Styles from Pickerington.  The 14 four-star recruits in this class include a #6 in the nation QB from Utah, three top 15 ranked WR's, and a massive 6'-6" 350 lb OT from Lakota West in West Chester.

Above is a recap of Coach Day's presser about the 2022 recruiting class and his recent hire of Jim Knowles to be the new DC.  Day also mentioned that he expects the total recruiting class to be "more than 20 players" by the February final signing day.

The Rose Bowl may still be "The Granddaddy of Them All" - but in the CFP era, it's just another bowl game that won't factor into the national championship picture.  But if nothing else, it at least gets the team away from a week of gray and rainy weather in Ohio:

As for the game itself, four Buckeye starters opted out of the Rose Bowl - wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, left tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and defensive tackle Haskell Garrett.  All four players are expected to be high picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

With two starting WR's out, fans with get a preview of the 2022 receiving corps with freshmen Emeka Egbuka, Julian Fleming and Marvin Harrison Jr. joining sophomore starter Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the Rose Bowl.

WOW(!)  WHAT A GAME(!!)

The Buckeyes faced a lot of adversity in this game.  Down four starters.  Down 14-0 early in the game.  But unlike Michigan versus Georgia, OSU didn't fold.  Utah was still up 35-21 at halftime.  And the most of the breaks didn't go the Buckeyes way.  Utah had a kickoff return TD, recovered a fumble in the endzone that looked like it was going to be an OSU TD, and intercepted an OSU pass in the endzone.

But OSU didn't stop fighting.  The Buckeye defense put the clamps on Utah's offense in the second half and allowed the OSU offense a chance to mount a comeback.  And boy did they do it.

C.J. Stroud set an OSU record with 573 passing yards on 37/46 with 6 TD's.  Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a monster game with 15 catches for 347 yards(!) and 3 TD's.  The 347 yards was an OSU record, a Rose Bowl record and a FBS Bowl Record(!!)  The freshman WR's also played well, with Harrison leading the way with 3 TD's.

OSU ended up with 220 more total yards than Utah in the game.  But more importantly, they played with a ton of heart.

It was a fun game to watch, even if they lost.  But I'm glad they won!

It was certainly a fun game in the moment.  A little of the magic was lost for me with four Buckeyes opting out rather than to finish their college careers with their team--and then unfortunately having part of their concerns (staying healthy for the draft) validated by the head injury to the Utah QB.

Granted, if Olave and Wilson are in the game, Smith-Njigba probably doesn't set all the electrifying records that he did, since there would have been a lot more distribution of that wealth.  And we wouldn't have gotten to see the flashes we did of next year's receiving corps, Harrison in particular.

If a team doesn't reach the CFP Playoffs, I have zero problem with potential high draft pick players opting out.  They need to take care of themselves.

And it's not completely against the interests of OSU.  The greater the number of high pick NFL players OSU produces, the greater the number of top rated recruits OSU attracts.  Plus, those freshman receivers are getting a head start on 2022 with this real game experience.

The final National Signing Day was yesterday - which doesn't mean nearly as much since the bulk of recruits now sign on the Early Signing Day in December.  But teams can still add a few players, which Ohio State did with the addition of a four-star OL recruit from Wisconsin (who choose OSU over WISC) and a four-star DE from Texas (who choose OSU over Texas A&M and Texas).

The 2022 recruiting class now has 21 players - which is still ranked fourth-best in the nation.  11 of the players are already on campus as early enrollees, while the other 10 will enroll in the summer.

Meanwhile, Michigan's head coach was in Minnesota yesterday interviewing for the Vikings job.  Then the Vikings hired someone else, because "Michigan is back"🏈🙃
