Yeah, a guy who played at Indiana but kicked off the team for smoking weed and he gets a second chance to play at O.U... not trying to hate but how many Indiana (a premier college hoops program) caliber recruits end up playing in the MAC?  Basset is a once in awhile type talent to play in the MAC and he is just now getting comfortable in O.U.  This may be his last year of eligibility or second to last.

He wasn't kicked off of IU, though there were certainly rumors he ummm "enjoyed weed".  He transfered to UAB because of the coaching instability around Kalvin Sampson and then transferred to OU to be closer to home because of an ill family member supposedly.  Regardless he has one more year of eligibility left.  Actually this entire team is coming back minus Van Kempen, which is pretty scary.  and the incoming recruiting class is as good as we've had in years.

Dan Dakich explicitly booted Basset off of the Indiana basketball team.  Sure a lot of it had to do with his drug use, but he and another player were given another chance with the Hoosiers and blew it by missing meetings.

I had thought dakich was the interim guy and it really amounted to a suspension until a new coach was brought in... could be wrong.  either way... good for the bobcats.

NCAA tourney: Tennessee too much for Ohio

Providence, R.I. -- No.14 seed Ohio University finally ran out of out magic today -- definitely it ran out three-point shots -- in the second round of the NCAA Midwest regional, falling 83-68 to #6 Tennessee.  OU was hoping to make that trip to St. Louis after shocking the brackets Thursday night with its upset of #3 seed Georgetown.  But as hot as the Bobcats' two shooting guards, D.J. Cooper and Armon Bassett, were that night, they were just as cold against Tennessee's oppressive, screen-busting defense.

Basketball player that enjoys weed? Looks like he picked the right campus....

Oh well good run for my Bobcats. Here is to next year. Both in football (now that CMU's  LeFevour is in the NFL draft) and basketball. Much different from when I was there and the biggest attraction at the Football game was the midget in the Marching 110.

EDIT: That is probably not PC, however it is true. Grobe bolted for Wake Forest and the football team was god awful....

Awesome run OHIO! I too would have loved to see us play OSU, would have been fun!

Next year looks to be scary good!!

Well if that is to be the case maybe they ought not go 7-9 in MAC conference play and get lucky in the tourney... Just sayin!  That berth isn't promised... but kudos on a program defining win against the Big East Hoyas... not one they will soon forget in Athens.

:)  Hater! :)

I'm pretty sure that 9 of ohio's losses where by 5 points or less. Also ,this included kicking a player off the team and losing washington to a 5 game suspension. When he got back they seemed to be a different team. Also luck is always a part of a winning streak to an extent. You have to get some breaks. OU made the most of the breaks and got very hot at the right time which is the name of the game. Remember north carolina won 8 of their first 10 games including wins over ohio state and michigan state and a 2 point loss to kentucky. This year is considered one of their worst ever because of how they finished.

Sounds like reason to believe next year will be bright.  I will not pretend that I followed O.U. basketball this year so this is all news to me.  All I did was google their record and I followed the MAC tourney since the finals were in Cleveland.

The Miami hockey team has reached their second consecutive Frozen Four with a double overtime win over Michigan this past weekend.

Miami reached the college hockey Championship Game last year - which was documented in the thread "Miami University in NCAA Hockey Championship Game".  Miami came within minutes of winning their first NCAA title in last year's game.  Unfortunately, they were undone by an unbelievable late game two goal comeback to force the game into overtime - where heavily favored Boston University got the game winning goal.

This year, it looks like the Miami RedHawks might be the favored team going into college hockey's biggest tournament.  Below is an article that recaps their win over Michigan and looks ahead to the upcoming Frozen Four in Detroit.

NCAA Hockey: RedHawks in Frozen Four for second consecutive season

FORT WAYNE, IND. -- Alden Hirschfeld made sure Miami of Ohio's season didn't end in overtime for a second straight season.  Hirschfeld scored 1:54 into the second overtime to give the top-seeded RedHawks a 3-2 victory over Michigan in the NCAA Midwest Regional final Sunday night, sending the RedHawks to the Frozen Four for the second straight year.

The RedHawks (29-7-7) came within a minute of winning the national title last year before squandering a two-goal lead and losing in overtime to Boston University.  Now the RedHawks will face Boston College (27-10-3) in the semifinals April 8 in Detroit.

Go 'Skins

Last night's game was a barn-burner, one player even lost his monocle, but I'm glad to report that the team made it back to Oxford in time for tea and biscuits.

oh how i would love for them to beat bc -- go miami oh!

Frozen Four: Miami returns, eager to atone for late collapse

Miami University is looking for a second chance in the Frozen Four.  A year ago, RedHawks fans were chanting "Yes, we can! Yes, we can!" with their team ahead by two goals and on the verge of winning its first national championship in any team sport.  Then Boston University cut the lead to one with 59 seconds left, tied it with 17 seconds left, then stunned Miami with a fluke goal in overtime.

RedHawks coach Enrico Blasi said his players have used that crushing loss as motivation.  They sat down a few days after that game and talked out their frustrations.  They then started talking about all that they accomplished, including advancing to the Frozen Four for the first time.  Team captain Tommy Wingels said the RedHawks dealt with the championship loss in different ways.  "You can scream and pout about it for days and weeks and let it get to you, or you can start working again," he said.  "I think we took the second route, and it has paid off."

This season, Miami faced a far more difficult loss to overcome.  On Feb. 5, student manager Brendan Burke, the son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, was killed in a car crash in Indiana.  "What we do on the ice is a game and we love it," Blasi said.  "But what happened to Brendan, that's real life.  It's something you have to go through together."

Top-seeded Miami (29-7-7) will play fourth-seeded Boston College (27-10-3) in a semifinal tonight in Ford Field in Detroit.  In the first game, Rochester Institute of Technology (28-11-1), seeded 15th in the 16-team field, faces third-seeded Wisconsin (27-10-4).  The winners play Saturday in the title game.

meh... The city of Oxford is growing to hate the city of Boston. Maybe next year Redskins!

Bounced By BC

For the second straight year, Miami came up short in the Frozen Four, dispatched this time by Boston College, 7-1.

During the ESPN broadcast, they displayed a graphic that showed Miami has been eliminated by Boston teams (BC or BU) something like five times in the past six years.  :-(  Too bad.  It would have been fun to see a Miami vs. Wisconsin final.

My entire family is mostly from Boston... as if I didn't hear enough about the Red Soc, Celtics, Patriots and even them being Michigan fans due to Tom Brady...

Mid-American Conference basketball tournaments to stay in Cleveland

By JOEL HAMMOND

3:11 pm, August 11, 2010

The Mid-American Conference has announced an extension of its contract with Quicken Loans Arena and will hold its men's and women's basketball tournaments at The Q through 2017.

“The Mid-American Conference is extremely pleased to extend our partnership with Quicken Loans Arena and the Cleveland Cavaliers for our FirstEnergy Men's and Women's Basketball Conference Tournament," MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a statement. "This partnership provides our student-athletes and our fans the finest basketball facility in the country for our conference basketball tournament.”

On the men's side, this past March's tournament was the first time since 2006 that every team did not play in Cleveland; from 2007-2009, all games were held at the arena. Last year, the conference returned to its previous format, in which the top four teams received first-round byes and teams seeded fifth through eighth played first-round tournament games on their respective campuses. That format will continue.

This has been woefully undercovered in the PD and on UO.  The Zips men's soccer team beat Louisville, Ky in Santa Barbara, Ca on Sunday for the NCAA men's division 1 soccer championship.  This is the first championship that Akron has ever won in any sport.  It's great for the school and great for NE Ohio.  I wanted to drive up to Santa Barbara from LA on Sunday and watch the game, but had other things that needed to get done.  At least I got to watch the Zips score the only goal of the game in the second-half on ESPN2.

omg i heard about this match and then forgot to look for it on espn or to see what happened. excellent!

Well, OU choked again in a bowl game. I still don't think we've won one yet.

Akron wins the MAC tournament and qualifies for the NCAA tourney.  The Zips will be a #15 seed in the Southwest Region.  On Friday, they will face #2 Notre Dame in Chicago.

UPDATE: Akron eliminated by Norte Dame 69-56.

Ohio has a JOKE schedule this year...  Add that with as good of a team as we've had under Frank, and we could very well see a 10+ win season.

Nice win for the Bobcats over Temple last night on ESPN primetime. Some good national exposure. They wore the new black uni's and looked good. Although I still dislike the "Attack Cat" logo, long live the paw print!

Does anyone like the Attack Cat over the paw print?  I have yet to meet anyone...

Wasn't sure how I felt about the black uniforms though.  I think I would have liked it more if it was easier to read "Ohio" on the helmet.

Great showing by the Bobcats!  My wife was happy as a Florida alum as well, to see Steve Addazio get beat (former Florida offensive coordinator she hated and now Temple head coach).

^ The attack cat is just god awful 90's. Blahh. I am fine with the Black uni's for special occasions, just not all of the time.

I must admit that hiring Solich was a brilliant move by OU, they finally have a consistent program. Solich just wanted a nice low pressure gig to ride him out to retirement  after getting booted from Nebraska, he has no interest of going anywhere else. Most MAC schools have the problem of losing young coaches to bigger programs once they get the programs above mediocrity. I was there right after Grobe had a few good years and left for Wake Forest. The team was abysmal during my time there.

Yeah, Addazio was getting pretty worked up during the game. He seems like a blowhard.

I love the Attack Cat, and the black unis.  And helmets.  Did you see the 2009 win at Peden, when the Cats looked like the New York Jets?

I liked the Paw.  That's what it was back in 1990 or so, when they were 1-9-1 every year.  When I was there, they had a QB named Kareem Wilson.  OU went 8-3 one year.

Solich came.  I like the trick plays, they just need to handle the ball better.

NOV 22 is a HUGE game.  But don't overlook this week's opponent.

(Buffalo loss still hurtful.)

Oh, also, my friend Matt's dad designed the Paw in the late 1960s. Not that it was rare (Clemson, Beechwood...LOL).

Been a while since this has been up here but...

Terry Bowden has been named Head Coach of the Akron Zips.

www.gozips.com

It's been a rollercoaster the past few days....I was getting depressed.  So far everyone is praising this hire.  While the last two years have been miserable, I'm optimistic that fans will be coming back now.

GO ZIPS!!

We finally grabbed OUr first bowl win, now OUr hoops team is 11-1 and could very well be ranked in the Top 25 in the next two weeks.  It's a great time to be a Bobcat!

ALSO, Ohio is finally putting Gary Trent up in the rafters later this month at halftime of the Miami game.  This team+the Shaq of the MAC+Miami game=SELLOUT.  Get your tickets now... The Convo is going to be rocking!!

Wow, I missed how well they were doing in Basketball. Go Bobcats!

While this is not technically an Akron athletics hire, it's pretty close.  BTW, Tressel just sold his Upper Arlington home that he bought in 2003 for $1.38 million to Columbus auto dealer Bobby Layman for $2.2 million!  What depressed real estate market?

Tressel taking administrative job at Akron

AKRON, Ohio (AP)—Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is going back to school—in a newly created position at the University of Akron.

The school announced Thursday that Tressel has been hired as vice president for strategic engagement and will earn a base salary of $200,000 per year.  The job starts May 1.

Wow. That is a huge hire by Akron!  Congrats to everyone at the University for making this happen....

Funny that Temple is out of the MAC and UMASS is in and last night UMASS beat Temple on the basketball court. Is UMASS in for Bball or just football?

OU punches its ticket to the big dance with a MAC Tournament win over Akron.  OU goes into the tourney with a 27-7 record.

Ohio U. gets the #13 seed in the Midwest Region.

They will face #4 Michigan in Nashville on Friday.

Go Bobcats!

Every year the MAC games at the Q are freaking amazing, and this year was no different.

p.s. GO ZIPS

(the real action is in the NIT this year anyhow)

Love that we're playing Michigan.  Michigan, in an attempt to disrespect Ohio State, started calling OSU "Ohio".  I sent Jalen Rose (via Twitter) some smack talk that now he actually gets to play Ohio since he's seemingly been confused the past few months.  Hopefully we can pull the 1st round upset similar to the Georgetown win 2 years ago!

Agreed.  I'm a big Bucks fan and I think the irony here is rich.  And I think Michigan's soft interior game makes them ripe for an upset.

Damn, we get the 7:40 PM time slot for our game. Primetime. There are going to be a lot of confused beer drinkers at BW3s around the country tonight."wait? Why is Ohio State wearing green?"

Let's go Bobcats!

Ohio knocks out Michigan 65-60.

#13 OU will face #12 South Florida (who upset Temple)

OU knocks out USF 62-56 and advances to the Sweet 16!

They will face #1 seeded North Carolina.
