I thought OU might actually pull off the biggest upset of the tourney when they led #1 NC late in the second half.

But congrats on a great season Bobcats.

Awesome game for OU last night. I am very proud of the team as an Alumni. The bar was going crazy during the second half.

Consider KSU's success especially in basketball and more recently in baseball and football (although they've contributed a few players to the NFL over the decades), I realized we ought to have a thread about KSU athletics.

And I'm happy to pimp one of my former schools anytime. When I was at Kent in the mid- to late-80s, our football program was terrible and no one even discussed football. Frankly, I never went to any KSU sports events back then because none of the teams were doing well.

Ohio University visited a sold-out Beaver Stadium and dealt yet another blow to the Penn State football program.  Only this time it was on the football field.  After trailing 14-3 at halftime, OU scores the next 21 points to upset Penn State 24-14.

Great game to watch. Congrats Bobcats!!!

It's been nothing short of amazing watching what Solich has built in Athens.  Roderick McDavis has been the straw that stirs the drink in terms of revitalizing the athletic programs at Ohio, but unfortunately he's often criticized for the amount of money (a bargain compared to most FBS schools) that is spent on athletics.  As a member of the Athens High School Marching Band I watched 1-AA Northeastern dismantle the Bobcats from the stands at Peden Stadium during  the annual high school band day in 2002.  I didn't realize it at the time, nor did I really care, but that was rock bottom. A couple years later (2005), after transferring from Tulane back home to Ohio, I watched the Bobcats upset the Pittsburgh Panthers during Solich's home opener.  Quite a contrast, and the program hasn't looked back since.  The college bookstore used to sell shirts that said "Athens, Ohio:  A Drinkin' Town with a Football Problem".  Not really the case anymore.

Solich was always a good football coach, he just had trouble winning big games at Nebraska.  It was disastrous to be frank, but it's a great thing for Ohio U. to have a coach who won 58 games in six years in the Big 12 when it was still a potent conference.

Solich has come a long way from drunk driving around downtown Athens to winning bowl games and beating Penn State. I think Sports Illustrated was right in its prediction. Ohio University is going undefeated.

He may still be drunk driving around town. I'll bet Bob Huggins is doing so in Morgantown. Unless he has seen the light with their PRT system.

Frank Solich transforming Ohio University into the 'Boise State' of the Midwest

Wed, Sep 12, 2012 10:25 PM EDT

Frank Solich has a rule. He vowed he would never break it. No matter what, he told himself, he would never take a head coaching job at a school that didn't have a conveniently located airport. He broke the rule. And not just a little bit, either. Ohio University, where Solich took the head coaching job seven years ago, is more than an hour from the nearest airport. How remote is it? So remote that West Virginia is closer than the Columbus airport. So remote that you have to drive through a national forest to get from Athens to your flight.

"We don't have a major airport nearby," Solich says. "We don't have a large population. We're kind of isolated. Those things are concerning."

Not concerning enough, apparently. Ohio U. is now the hottest football team in the Buckeye State. Sorry Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland (and Oxford, Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo). The Bobcats had at least as many wins last year (10) as any other Division I team in the state. That hasn't happened since 1968. And it's likely to happen again, as Ohio is the only unbeaten MAC team, having already beaten Penn State on the road. The Bobcats are favored to win the rest of their games, and although you shouldn't expect them to get consideration for a BCS bowl, you should expect them to be a topic in the wearying December debates about who "deserves" what bowl.

I love how the author left out Cant State...probably forgot they existed!

Who is this Ohio U.?  I heard it was OhioTM that was 3-0.

Squeaker of a win for the Bobcats this weekend. I hooked the laptop up to the TV and streamed the game on ESPN3, which was only mildly annoying. UMass won't remain winless for long in the MAC, they are a very young team with lots of talent and a new coach. I am guessing they will be the MAC East rival for OU for the foreseeable future. Or until their coach jumps ship. He is Brian Kelly's protege after all.

Ohio University, 6-0 and bowl eligible. That is all.

Ohio University, 6-0 and bowl eligible. That is all.

This should be a great game on Saturday. Akron has a very good offense and is due for a win. Those close games with Buffalo and UMass should be a little concerning for Bobcat fans.

Congrats, guys. Welcome to the big boys' league.

^Huge.

Anyone know when the last time was the Bobcats cracked the top-25? Is this a first?

^1960's.

While I applaud their undefeated record, they have a SOS rank of 242, which is one of the lowest of any team.  I realize you can only play who is on your schedule, but based on their body of work, they shouldn't be ranked.

^Hey, it turns out Penn State isn't as bad as people expected!

I think Toledo is there other team to watch in the MAC. I'd love a Toledo v. Ohio conference championship game.

kent state is the team to watch.

This is a good year for the top of the mac

The MAC gets to test its mettle in the Toledo-Cincinnati game on Saturday. Cincinnati fans are not taking the match-up lightly; they have a lot of respect for Toledo. More than a few are probably glad the Bearcats are taking on the Rockets and not the Bobcats.

Ruh-oh not looking too good today Bobcats

I know that Tettleton does amazing things extending plays with his legs but for god sakes when you are on the 5 yd line down by 3 with 9 seconds left and no timeouts, you throw the ball away if your initial play isn't there. Take the FG and go into OT.

Bad play there.  Shows Solich has infinite faith in Tettleton but honestly should have gone for the tie and overtime.  As disappointing as it is, the goal for this year was a  conference championship.  Let's get it.

That was fun while it lasted. I was pulling for you guys.

MAC is a beast this year. Beating up hard on the Big East.

KSU basketball has been one of the university's most recurring success stories......

In the 2002 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament KSU advanced to the Elite Eight as a tenth seed and posted ten consecutive 20-win seasons, from the 1998-1999 season to the 2007-2008 season. Kent State has five total appearances in the NCAA Division I basketball tournament.

It has had other recent and increasing number of athletic successes:

2011-12 Has been a banner year for the Mid-American Confernece as a whole here are a few of the MAC Accomplishments this season:

Baseball – Kent State reaching the College World Series (defeating top ranked Florida) in 2011-12

Men's Golf – Kent State reached the NCAA Championships (Lost in Match Play Quarterfinals); finished T-5th overall last year

And now their football team, which sucked when I went to school there in the 80s, is a very good team this year, including KSU earning a 7-1 record yesterday after beating a ranked team (Rutgers yesterday) for the first time in the school's history!

So what is up with KSU athletics lately?? Hopefully this success continues and won't be a surprise anymore.

Kent State tops Rutgers for first win over ranked team

By The Sports Xchange | The SportsXchange – 12 hours ago

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Luke Batton stood outside the locker room after Kent State handed No. 15 Rutgers its first loss, 35-23, on Saturday and was asked about the program's first triumph over a ranked opponent.

"Never knew that," the junior linebacker said. "But we're just trying to go out there prepared every week and it doesn't matter the opponent. It's exciting, that's for sure. It's definitely a big-time win."

Spencer Keith threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and Trayion Durham rushed for a career-high 131 yards and a score as Kent State spoiled a Rutgers homecoming by snapping a 0-23 slide vs. ranked foes.

I'm pretty sure Kent cheated.

I'm pretty sure Kent cheated.

How so?

No doubt the MAC is strong this year. I can't believe OU did that stupid play...it's one thing to get beaten handily, but quite another to lose on a dumb decision like that...and to Miami!

It looks like Toledo, Kent State, Northern Illinois, or Ohio will be gunning for the title. So no BCS game this year, but there should be some good bowl placements.

Nice quality win for the Bobcats last night.

Kent State topped OU yesterday to finish their regular season 8-0 in the MAC and 11-1 overall.  As the MAC East Champion, Kent State will face (#24) Northern Illinois, the league's West Champion, in next week's MAC Championship Game.

I'm sure you could guess the source of the hate! And don't say "jealousy." Though that's part of it ha ha.

One thing to point out is that Kent st and maybe northern illinois have a legitimate shot at a bcs game. If any of the non automatic qualifying conferences have a team that is in the top 16 and are ranked higher then any of the qualifying conference champions, then that team goes to a  bcs game.Currently no big east school is in the top 25. Kent st is currently at 17 in the bcs and beating 21 northern illinois would be huge. UCLA at 16 would be the most likely to lose still although if nebraska or florida st lost it would be conceivable for them to move lower then 16. Orange bowl reps are going to the mac title game so it would be of  benefit for both teams to bring lots of fans.

^The Northern Illinois/Kent State winner did get a BCS bowl.  Northern Illinois will be playing Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

That was quite a MAC Championship Game.  Kent State had 3 TD's in the 4th quarter to send the game into overtime.  NI finally won 44-37 in 2 OT's.  Kent State finished 11-2 (BCS ranked #25) and will play in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on January 6.

The MAC had a pretty great year in football.  Northern Illinois won the MAC Championship game over Kent State to finish 12-1 and be ranked #15 in the BCS.  That BCS ranking earned the MAC Champion a spot in the New Year's Day Orange Bowl against Florida State.

Six other MAC teams were also invited to bowl games:  Kent State, Ohio U., Toledo, Central Michigan, Bowling Green and Ball State.
