Posted December 16, 201014 yr Most of you probably already know about this. The Pro Football HOF recently announced plans for it's largest expansion ever. The expansion should be completed in time for the Hall's 50 year anniversary in 2013. Here is the story and architectural renderings: http://www.profootballhof.com/planyourvisit/2010/12/10/hall-of-fame-expansion-renovation-announced/ Future 50 Project announced 12/10/2010 Plans for a major expansion and renovation of the Pro Football Hall of Fame were announced today by the Hall of Fame’s Board of Trustees. The expansion and renovation project, the largest in the Hall of Fame’s history, will enable the museum to better preserve and present its ever-growing collection of historical artifacts and documents. It will also provide major enhancements to the visitor experience and accommodate the growing number of Hall of Fame guests, especially during the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. The current exteriors of the gallery spaces are super bland and I like the changes I see in the renderings. I LOVE the original entrance, and hate to see it go... but it is probably for the best in reality. I hope the preserve the original entrance ramp and incorporate it in some way. It looks like they want to close the street that splits the hall from the stadium and build a plaza, I think that is a GREAT idea. This project is great news for Canton. I will check in on this thread from time to time and update with construction pictures as things progress.
December 16, 201014 yr They claim changing the entrance location will relieve any confusion for guests.... these renderings make it look like two main entrances even though you won't be able to use the old one... that seems more confusing. Apparently in 3 years Canton will look like the movie 300... air pollution? One problem with this rendering.... where the hell is the Cleveland Browns flag! :whip: The cube looks a bit silly next to the original building. I like the blocked off, bricked street. The painted sky ceiling is cheesy as heck, I really hope that gets nixed.
March 19, 201213 yr Don't miss the video and photo gallery that the Canton Repository put together. Hall of Fame getting a facelift for the future By Todd Porter CantonRep.com staff writer CANTON — There is dirt and mud. Plywood and two-by-fours. These aren’t the makings of the history of football. They are making the future of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It is obvious when one drives past the Hall that Stark County’s iconic building is undergoing its biggest facelift since it originally was built in 1963. http://www.cantonrep.com/sports/hall_of_fame/x872946809/Hall-of-Fame-getting-a-facelift-for-the-future

March 22, 201213 yr Thanks! My pleasure :-) I rode past the HOF today to take some exterior photos of the project. They are really humming along, the exterior should look pretty decent for the next Induction ceremony. You can see that the plans changed a lot from the renderings above. The overall look is a lot less dramatic than I expected. The decorative piece above the main entrance was really scaled down, at the moment I think it looks odd. Even so, the expansion is a major improvement on what it used to look like. March 26, 201213 yr Me either, I think the renderings also gave a false impression of the glazing. I was expecting it to be more of a translucent white, but the renderings are all shown at night so I think they were done to show white light coming through from inside.

Yes, I think you are right about the renderings. I did go back at night (because I left my water bottle behind) and the windows looks more like the renderings. I think the whole thing has been dumbed down to the point of bland. Consider past expansions, ultra bland has been the recipe for decades. The original domed structure remains a signature, but no one would ever recognize the rest of it. Here is the Hall of Fame in 1963, in it's original form.

June 13, 201213 yr The building needed a refit, but the end result doesn't appear to be quite as impressive as I thought it might be. Maybe they are still kicking around the idea of moving the HoF and Fawcett stadium to Downtown Canton in a few years' time and so decided to hold back on going all out for the current HoF location?
June 19, 201212 yr I don't think the Hall of Fame will ever move to downtown Canton, and I am ok with that. There current location does have some upside. It is next door to Fawcett stadium, has plenty of parking, ties into the city parks and the neighboring houses really seem to join in with the celebrations. Maybe someday they will add a HOF component downtown, some sort of extension that would draw visitors in. I think that would be a great compromise for everyone. Now if we could PLEASE get the rib-burn off back downtown and out of the podunk fair grounds. I agree though, the building expansion is a major letdown. I don't like the silver panels that they mixed in with the main windows. I assume most of the changes were budget driven.
May 18, 201510 yr Not the "Future 50" expansion, but this is the only football HOF expansion thread...
