Posted December 17, 201014 yr I have never seen anyone mention whether or not they are active skiers. And after doing a quick search of the site it doesn't seem to be a topic that comes up a lot. There does seem to be a general distain toward winter and the snow that accompanies it. I think the best way to change that mindset is to create a view that winter is playtime!! :-D :-D I've been chomping at the bit to get out since I bought a new pair last weekend. My New Skies The Wife figured out that we are going to end up spending $6,000 over the next 3 months on trips. This was before we bought new skis too. I wonder if I have a problem? I was wondering if anyone else is that active/demented?
December 17, 201014 yr I go on one ski trip a year. I borrow an extra set of skis/boots from a friend that also goes on that trip. So I'm not much of a skier but I do get out in the snow. I still get out and hike my local area trails 2-3 times a week even with 2 feet of snow here on the east side of Cleveland.

December 17, 201014 yr I've got bum knees, so downhill is out. I've heard snowboarding might be a better route, but haven't pursued yet. I used to cross country ski a lot. My skis are back home in NY, though. Maybe I should go get them (they're only 20 years old now!)

December 17, 201014 yr Blew the right one out in HS playing basketball. Had it scoped. Blew the left one out in college doing the same. Moral of the story...stop playing basketball (most of the people I played with would have told me that years ago..)
December 17, 201014 yr ^^ Nice purchase! I grew up skiing...joined ski club in 5th grade that went to Boston Mills/Brandywine once a week. Once my older brother got a car, I quit ski club and we just went on our own a couple nights a week - typically we got season passes for x-mas :) Would go to Holiday Valley/Peak N Peak a couple times a year in addition to going locally and finally convinced our parents to take us to Vermont one year (they don't ski). Once I got out of school I started going to Colorado annually...then I struck gold when I married a girl whose parents have a condo in Vail! So we try to go out there once a year now, plus an extended trip to Holiday Valley each year (was there for New Year's last year...great snow, lots of fun). I stopped going to Boston Mills towards the end of high school...it just got to be no fun since it's so small and crowded. I haven't been back since. But I have to say, it was a great place to learn how to ski...the sometimes icy, mostly man made snow really almost makes you become a better skier. Anway, I love to ski...thinking about it makes we want to plan a trip!

Moral of the story...stop playing basketball (most of the people I played with would have told me that years ago..) I hear ya. I had to stop playing all court sports. Tore my left ACL in 1997. Had microfracture surgery on my right knee in 2007. So yeah...sucks. The ACL - while painful - was something I recovered from and had no problems with after. But since I have no cartilage in my right knee...outside of whatever formed when they poked holes in my femur to "create" cartilage, my doctor told me to back off on court sports or jogging for fitness unless I wanted to end up back on the operating table down the road. Still, skiing doesn't give me too many problems. My knees typically don't hurt. My legs may be sore, but nothing that wouldn't be expected. You should give it a try!

We are going out to Beaver Creek/Vail in a month. So I need to get in shape, those runs will kill you. That is the biggest difference, out west you tire so much quicker. Probably a combination of Altitude and Distance. But mad do your legs feel like jello by the end of the day.

December 17, 201014 yr skiing - I always said if I wanted a dangerous, expensive habit that only rich people can really afford to do right, I'd take up a cocaine habit. I wasn't meant to slide down a hill of snow and ice on little plastic sticks. I'm accident-prone enough just on my own 2 feet on dry land.

Who would have thought the king (or is it queen?) of shopping wouldn't know there are tons of "fabulous" clothing lines exclusively for skiing? Just show up in Aspen or Vail a day early and you can get fitted with some great stuff...

Prior to my last trip out west, I decided to not take any elevators for like 2 months. 8 floors anytime I went in or out of my condo building; 5 floors at work...on top of extra time in the gym on ellipticals and stairmasters. Lot of work (I did get used to taking the stairs) but it was worth it. My legs held up better than they had in a long time!

December 17, 201014 yr Crack is cheap! Oh...uh... THAT kind of skiing. Well, sometimes. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
December 17, 201014 yr Honestly, I wouldn't mind learning how to X-Country ski as it looks like a good work out. Cleveland is the wonderful nexus of a long growing season and a ton of snow. I went xc skiing 18 times last year. The best advice I can give you is to take lessons at 9:00 AM on Saturday or Sunday at the Pine Lodge Ski Center in Kirtland: http://www.lakemetroparks.com/programs/activities/pinelodgeskicenter.shtml Or, you can take lessons from my wife and me. You would be renting skis from Pine Lodge in any case. The man who runs Pine Lodge is obsessive about maintaining the trails. There are lights on a one mile loop of trails for your safety and enjoyment. The cardio training for XC skiing is about ten beats higher than running. It takes a few times out to learn the rhythm of skiing. If you are a downhill skier, you will learn it quicker. If you are a roller-blader, you will pick it up quicker.
December 17, 201014 yr Huh! I took up xc a couple of years ago and really love it, but I am utterly awful at descents (especially that right turn down to Arbor Lane in Chapin) since I've never done downhill. Are the lessons first-come, or do I need to reserve a space? I'll typically just do laps in Clark Field. In any case, if you have bad knees, the only thing better than xc might be cycling. (EDIT: Well, I guess I could just check out the linked brochure, but it's still not clear whether one should register for multiple sessions/classes.)
December 17, 201014 yr I never took lessons on xc. As a result I was never very good, but I got to a level where I could acceptably navigate intermediate level paths. Most of the time, my family and I would head out into the Adirondacks and just use snowmobile trails, as they do an excellent job of packing down a trail. Just make sure to get out of their way!
December 17, 201014 yr My friend from NYC made a good point the other day. People in Ohio hibernate during the winter. They never do anything outside. I've never skied but I'll try anything once.
December 17, 201014 yr Are the lessons first-come, or do I need to reserve a space? Call to register: Classic Cross-country Ski Lessons 101 (Beginner level) Ages 12 and older (younger than 18 with adult) Fee: $15 with ski rental, $10 without ski rental Learn how to fall down and get up, glide, stride, stop, turn and use your poles. If rental equipment is needed, please state gender, shoe size and height when registering. Participants should arrive 15 minutes prior to class time to “boot up.” Before leaving home, call 440-954-4178 to confirm class and snow conditions. All lessons take place at Chapin Forest Pine
December 17, 201014 yr Yep. Cross-country. My dad did it a lot in Minneapolis, but here in Cincinnati I do it the few times a year it snows hard enough to ski :-D
December 18, 201014 yr I used to ski at Tahoe, but have not been in a while. I broke my leg a few years ago, and have not been back on skis since. My younger brother was a ski fiend and rented a house every winer in Trukee, and went up nearly every weekend.
December 18, 201014 yr My friend from NYC made a good point the other day. People in Ohio hibernate during the winter. They never do anything outside. I've never skied but I'll try anything once. He's an expert on Ohio in Winter. Sounds like a gross and inaccurate perception. Hell there are plenty of people in NYC that dont go out. Oh hell to the naaw!!! The Shaker Lakes are right next to me, just as I run/bike around the lakes, I would just x-country ski there.
December 18, 201014 yr It would take you forty hours to drive to Kirkland. It would probably feel like forty hours in winter!
