December 16, 20213 yr I also noticed they applied the Gravity branding to the crane with the signature G with a dot. nice touch.
December 20, 20213 yr There was a fire last night, it appeared from one of the buildings going up on the peninsula. I couldn't see which one from my vantage point, but there was significant smoke and emergency vehicles there.

I scoured the local news sites and social media and haven't seen anything about it.
December 20, 20213 yr What time? If you're in River South, the vantage point could make this fire a likely observation. It broke out around 10.30p.
December 20, 20213 yr I did a quick drive past the Peninsula today and everything looks normal and full speed ahead. I was going to post the same article, the fire was pretty far from this project. Edited December 20, 20213 yr by 4N6science Spelling
December 21, 20213 yr I was walking my dog by Bicentennial park about 3 AM or so when I saw the smoke. All the emergency equipment I saw was on the peninsula itself. If there is no damage, I have no reasonable explanation. It looked like something was burning directly to the west of the office building. The timing of the house fire doesn't really explain what I saw.

March 1, 20223 yr “Earlier this month, the City of Columbus announced that four artists were being tapped to create new public art installations on the Starling Garage, which is currently under construction at the site of The Peninsula development. Those four artists include local muralists Adam Hernandez, Nick Stull and Lucie Shearer, along with architecture and design firm Studio KCA. The public art was commissioned by the city of Columbus with a budget of $250,000 through the Columbus Art Commission. A total of 81 applications were submitted for the project. Three of the works will take the form of murals while the installation from Studio KCA is a sculpture of bird figures called “Gather and Flow” that will illuminate with LED lighting at night. Installation of the public artwork will take place this spring ahead of the garage opening in June.” https://columbusunderground.com/public-art-commissioned-for-scioto-peninsula-parking-garage-we1/?fbclid=IwAR1i5wnyBZQNhlhIMLUbDczsEbrIzr3FVVJTmLKrlsZCrm8AhIr4Sl6YKIs

March 4, 20223 yr I agree - it's time to resurrect the blue serpent on the Broad St bridge!! https://columbusunderground.com/never-built-columbus-serpent-mound-canopy-bw1/
March 4, 20223 yr Since we're no longer flooded with Orca imagery from Sea World commercials like we were in the '80s and '90s there is a hunger for them.

March 7, 20223 yr I haven’t seen a ton of pics from the south side of the Peninsula, so I snapped this one today.

It's part of the Columbus Downtown Development Corp.'s sprawling Peninsula project, a $500 million multi-phase project that will extend downtown's reach with new offices, retail and residential space and Rockbridge's hotel. Just this: ”Construction on the 31-story tower is expected to begin sometime this year. It's expected to take 36 months, Merkel said.” And they are going to reapply for the next round of TMUD credits.
March 18, 20223 yr I'm lucky to be able travel to similar size cities to Columbus and all I see are thriving downtowns with seemingly dozens of hi-rise offices and apartment/condos. I don't know how they do it because getting anything significant built in downtown Columbus is like pulling teeth. Didn't the convention authority finance the Hilton project? Other announced projects need credits or outright grants to build. Nothing is ever easy for Columbus.

They said they will begin construction this year, but apply for the next round of TMUD (because they project meets the requirements so why wouldn't they) which won't be issued until next year.

Part of the problem is how much easier and cheaper it is here to keep sprawling further and further out rather than building up in the CBD. We don’t have a big body of water or any other geographical feature to really stop it.
March 18, 20223 yr It might not end up being that much cheaper if Intel and warehouses make a "moat" around the city.

Yeah we don't have that geography which forces density but it does seem people are starting to realize that it's in the best interest of the city to get more dense, especially in the urban core.

Construction is going to eventually pollute the Big Darby without very strict guidelines. If it were up to developers, they would build sprawl right up to the river's edge.

So they're afraid to build something too tall here.

We currently have a 360’ tower that just topped out, a 410’ tower under construction, a 380’ tower close to breaking ground, and a 350’+ tower coming soon. The notion that people don’t want to build tall here seems to be going by the wayside.

People out here will fight developments that encroach too much on the creeks or primary tributaries. Also they are against "density" the same way people used to be against "urban" things. Density is the new urban. and Columbus is not annexing anything really too far out on the west side. The far west side is sort of like a Calgary or some other city-the development just suddenly drops off around a certain line-anything beyond that is super sprawlish due to the impact on the creeks. They can go northwest past Dublin or southwest past Grove City though.

April 22, 20223 yr I never noticed the inclusion of this caveat on the Columbus DDC website, "Assuming this project receives tax credit funding..." I would imagine that since this project didnt receive any funding through TMUD, this tower is dead in the water. Such a shame because the design (and obviously the height) were amazing.

That part had always been there. I’m sure they’ll reapply for the next round of funding later this year. That’s what the North Market is doing. If the last round showed anything, it’s that you have a better chance if your project has already started 🤷🏼♂️
