It’s a very hush, hush project. That’s what’s up. But now its under review by a public entity, and we have a right to know.

According to the review board pages both the Downtown and Franklinton meetings had been canceled for this month. They never change it until later, so when I checked it was still listed as happening. We will have to wait until February to see if they release the info.

  • This proposal sounds beautiful—30 story tower!—and it adds a lot more housing units. Fingers crossed this doesn’t get watered down before final approval.    The Peninsula's $211M second phase:

  • The Peninsula continues to rise ... crazy how the entire area used to be parking lots.

That’s the most bizarre thing. Do they not want new development? Construction season is fast approaching for those projects awaiting final review.

Idk about the Franklinton meeting, but the DT commission lacked a quorum, so they didnt hold it.

I don’t remember seeing this project on the agenda anyway.

I dont think the meeting was a full board or commission meeting. Could it have been a private meeting to verify all the details etc. Clerical stuff more than actual review?  A Thursday at 10am doesn't line up with any commission or council meetings that I can find.

Oh wow, it is going to fill the whole space! Can’t wait to see actual renderings.

Is that bleacher seating at a second level above Washington Blvd or is that a pedestrian only section of Washington?

Next up they need to get the police station moved so they can build up that little lot.

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far!

AECOM has some incredible looking projects, so hopefully they let them do their thing and don’t have too much Columbus influence in it. That area needs something truly unique and beautiful.

That slopes down to the river so highly doubt it. Also, there's trees lining the walkways to the building. I don't think it's an outdoor amphitheater.

Also, they're removing the majority of the street parking but maintaining the vehicular access. It looks like the other side of Washington will be large steps down to the river similar to what's behind COSI.

It will be an indoor venue. Very big deal for the region.

Well... if they are saying the plans above are outdated, that plan is the one downloaded from the city's website so... if redditors are posting images from the decade of conceptual drawing from any number of sources (Rapid5, Rockbridge, Zoo, CDDC, etc)... well... thats silly but it is an anonymous forum.  When the people in charge don't get out ahead of it and make an announcement about such a big project, rumors happen. But telling a group of internet nerds 'be careful what you share. It will lead to wrong conclusions....' two ways to solve that. 1. Release the plans. 2. Don't worry if nerds like us get lead astray for awhile lol.

I do rather enjoy when people close to a secretive project get defensive like that though.

It was a picture of the plans posted above on here. I will be curious to see what comes out and hopefully it’s on the agenda for February. You are right though, if the files are on a city website, either release them to the public somehow or don’t worry when it gets posted somewhere. It’s publicly accessible information, so not really sure why they would be mad.

Most likely because they don't know it's public information.

Because a lot of PM’s in this town a petty little female dogs. They think they’re important because they “know” things but really they make it very hard to do business with them, often delaying projects.

Completely real, please dont ask questions or look at my photoshop history. Absolutely real, yes 😁 It's a beauty!

While that is, uhhhhMAZING!....uh...on a real note, I still think an ACTUAL State (History) Museum should be put on the lot west of the Vet Museum.  It's a perfect spot, lots of space, and the STATE NEEDS AN ACTUAL STATE MUSEUM.

I was going to say, this looks like a copy and paste of the state museum haha. I agree that they should try to move that downtown, but I still think it should be a really cool aquarium, that’s my dream.

Can we also talk about the CoMIE abbreviation? I'm not sold. We all recognize more people will call it [Kahm-mee] and not [kō-mee], right?  And while I can credibly accused of having commie Tendencies, just seems odd to throw it out. Thought I left those days behind me once I left Commie Market (Community Market Groceries) territory many years ago.

I'll always advocate that we do need a better state museum but I say keep it where it is. My dream was always a complimentary contemporary structure that builds out of the original brutalist structure and covering the parking lot with a roof structure to turn it in to a large greenspace in front. Then you still get to maintain connection and expand Ohio Village. Moving the State museum could make Ohio Village  even more obsolete.

I won't argue if it's moved but I do think if done right, that curve could be a neat 'welcome' visual for the city and fairgrounds district.

I have been curious about space because it seems theoretically small to me. I drove by this weekend and its bigger than I remember now that I'm intentionally looking at it.  I overlaid the footprint of the Ohio Theatre from High to the AEP Pavilion and the Alley to the Covered Walkway.

Plenty of space assuming they aren't trying to be larger than the Ohio and don't need all the backstage area for huge fly system etc.

Wonder what the TMUD announcement means for the phase two tower. I’m guessing it gets pushed back and/or downsized again…

Ha commie didn’t even come to mind for me. I instantly thought Comey, specifically James. Another one the Trumpists will love.

Yeah I was thinking the same. It sounded like they are pretty dependent on that happening. I hope they just keep pushing it back rather than build something short and boring, just to get it filled in.

It's a play on COSI.

Hopefully the formal announcement is not too far off, given the submission of plans to the city. Agree that the name is strange, I would think CSO would want a more traditional symphony hall name that can be auctioned to the highest bidder/donor/sponsor

Of course unique programming of the educational center is great and much welcome, but I'd think that part could just as easily be called CoMIE at Nationwide Hall Value City Hall Wexner Hall, or whatever it may end up being

Not Wexner got plenty of Wexner. And Schottenstein.

But not enough Nina West.

Leave it up to Reddit and it will be Flavor Town Music Hall.

Well I don't think that'll matter too much if they end up pulling out the checkbook to get their name on the building.

Columbus Symphony Orchestra submits site plan for possible new downtown venue

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra has submitted plans to the city for a Center of Music Innovation and Education on the Scioto Peninsula.

The symphony declined to comment on the project.

The project is still in the early part of development and has only gone through a preliminary site plan review meeting, according to the Columbus Department of Building and Zoning Services.

It's not clear what the total price tag would be for such a project. The most recent state budget included $2 million for a Columbus Symphony Orchestra project; additional details were not immediately available.

Another article with more details

Columbus Symphony submits plans for new performance venue at Scioto Peninsula

Columbus Association of the Performing Arts (CAPA) CEO Chad Whittington told WOSU on All Sides Weekend last Friday that the symphony is aiming to build a smaller venue with better acoustics. Whittington said the project could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

"Planning is around a 1,500-1,600 seat concert hall in downtown Columbus. That's a much better fit from a size perspective than playing at the 2,800 seat Ohio Theatre," Whittington said.

"So why do we need (the new building)? Because we get something that is right sized for the symphony. And also when I think about the theatres we've got, how do we grow the Broadway season when we're sharing the Ohio Theatre between Ballet Met, the symphony and Broadway." Whittington said.

"Whittington explained that the Ohio Theatre was built as a movie theatre and while the acoustics are good, they were not made for live symphonic music."

Well, it wasn't built for stage shows either and the sound system and acoustics for Broadway shows is ALSO terrible.

As a season ticket holder, when I see the same show in other theaters, the difference becomes even more apparent. Hopefully resolving that is also part of the plan if they intend to keep shows at the Ohio.

Anybody else get really scared when they went there as a little kid? When I got older I liked it but in the 2nd Grade it was terrifying.

Columbus Symphony Orchestra Submits Plan for New Building on Scioto Peninsula

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra submitted preliminary plans to the City of Columbus to construct a three-story building on a long-vacant piece of land on the Scioto Peninsula.

Called the Center of Music Innovation & Education (CoMIE) on the submitted site plan, the proposed building would occupy a triangle-shaped, city-owned parcel located at 181 Washington Blvd., just south of COSI.

CSO Executive Director Denise Rehg declined to provide any more information or comment on the proposal, which was described as conceptual. A spokesperson for the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, the entity that has led the larger redevelopment of the Scioto Peninsula, also declined comment.

Hate to be “that guy” but those two buildings are clad in limestone.

The veterans museum and COSI both already provide more than enough concrete on the peninsula. I'm hoping CSO gives us something different

I love concrete, but I want this to be something interesting and new. Maybe glass?

I kinda want mass timber + glass, an ode to the Scioto and Skyline.
