Im up late listening to "The National" - Blood Buzz Ohio. Its a fantastic song from a band whose members hail from the Cincinnati area.

I was curious.. if you had to pick a song (or maybe a movie) that best defines any one place in the state, what song would it be? Where would it be? Is it hang on sloopy?

I am from Cleveland, and when I am in the right Lake Erie mood.. I turn to The Black Keys. I think they got the sound right. I also enjoy classics like Burn On, and Cleveland by Randy Newman and All-Time Quarterback, respectively.

Columbus? Cincinnati?

I want to hear what really defines you, in your opinion. And hopefully, we can all discover a new song or film that we will love.

Cincy- Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers/Greg Dulli - One of the best and most consistant rock acts out there. Just a little too dark for huge mainstream success.

Dayton- It's got to be Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices. Prolific pop genius. Ohio's version of The Replacements.

Akron- The Black Keys "Heavy Soul - Akron Oh." The old slogan says it all. Got to give DEVO and Chrissy Hynde their due too.

Cleveland - I love the James Gang/Joe Walsh/ PG&E/ Glenn Schwartz blues based rock sound.

Dayton is credited as the home of Funk Music and there's just too much homegrown talent to recognize for that (Ohio Players, Lakeside, Heatwave, Shirley Murdock, Platypus, Roger & Zapp, etc).  My vote for defining the city would be the Ohio Players.  Any song.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

second that one.

I have a Slackjaw EP on tape somewhere. I forgot all about that...I don't remember if that track was on it. It was a minor radio staple around NEO though.

evidently a lot of other people did too--lol

This has been covered in a broader context already. My take is in there. But as far as "defining" songs, I have to go with Springsteen's "Youngstown"

I see. I guess I am looking in a different scale though. Ya know, our state is broad and there are big differences between Cincy and Cleve and everything in between.

Great stuff everyone!

Did you review that thread in full?  The songs posted are not limited to Cincy and Cleveland

yes. they are from other states too. thanks for your input, but the thread you pointed us to was about songs about different states and the perception of place. the conversation then went one way or another. I want to know what kind of songs define specific cities in our state, but thank you for pointing out the other thread it had a lot of interesting stuff too.. but it came from a completely different question. interesting..

i'll have to check out Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers/Greg Dulli
