Rich,

Is there any chance you could support Tapatalk? (Instructions at http://www.tapatalk.com/plugin.php.)  I use the app for other forums on both my phone and tablet and it's a great way to access forums from mobile devices.

This is one of the primary reasons why I want to upgrade the forum. The 2.0 beta 3.1 that we use right now is not supported. Once we update the forum, tapatalk will work with urbanohio.

Thanks for the update.  As far as the update goes (being talked about in the other thread), I suggest SMF 2.0 RC4, as I would think it would get the site onto the "latest and greatest" as far as SMF goes and be a relatively simple upgrade.

I would like to update to RC4, but am trying to hold out for the 2.0 final.  Not sure how much longer we can wait though, its been over 2 years in the making since the original 2.0 beta.

J40Jeff,

I just installed Tapatalk on my Touch, any tricks that I should know about? It seems pretty straighforward.

Love this function.  Now I can easily access this forum from my iPhone.

Not really.  I like that they added support for intraforum links (that keep you inside the app instead of opening a browser), but I can't think of anything that isn't intuitive about the app.

Can somebody explain how this works in layman terms?

Hts Don't shoot me if I go too layman...

Tapatalk is an app for all of the major mobile devices that acts as a simple and intuitive frontend to 1000's of internet forums. It interfaces with several of the most popular  forum platforms  at a data structure level (hence the availibility once Rich upgraded us up to Simple machines 2.0)and presents the posts and forums in an easy to read and finger friendly navigation  page design. It also has support for Personal Messages and functions such as unread posts. It's an alternative to using the forum's mobile page or using the full webpage on the device's webbrowser.

It costs $2.99 and is easy to use. Just install it, look up UrbanOhio, log in and you are good to go.

Hts how are you viewing UO currently on you handheld? I always used the full page in the ipod browser even though it was hard to finger navigate the links, the mobile page felt too 1995.

Really enjoying Tapatalk. Way better than viewing the forum via mobile Safari.

I view the full page..... I hate mobile pages.

The search function when using Tapatalk is currently not available.  I am working on a fix.

  • 10 months later...

The search function while using tapatalk is working again.  Also, try accessing the forum via the regular address using your smart phone and check out the new mobile theme.  There is no cost to the members which makes it a better alternative to tapatalk.

The tapatalk app for iOS and android is now a free app. If you've been hesitant to make the purchase in the past, now there is no excuse! Also, our mobile theme is still available without any special apps or downloads and works amazingly well. Both options are great to keep you connected on the go.

Is anyone using the newly updated Tapatalk? Is it just me or is it awful? Lol I'm not sure if I'm just not used to it but it seems to be a super confusing downgrade over the last version

I'm not loving it either. The 'trending' discussions only show up intermittently, and are over a month old, and I have to go to my profile first to get to the forums (of which I only use UO). Very counter-intuitive.

I use the unread function mainly.  The thread subject is so small and left justified.  They've placed look over function. 1 star.

Good god I just installed the new update and now I miss the last one. I'm completely lost with this new version

Of the 612 reviews of the current update in iTunes - 585 are 1 star.  I don't think I've ever seen such a thing

Tapatalk support has been removed from the forum for the time being.  I updated to the latest release and we began to get errors as a result.

  • 3 weeks later...

Any idea when Tapatalk support will be back?

Seconded.  I really miss it.

I will attempt to add it again when the bugs associated with the mod have been fixed.

Is support for a different forum app possible? I really enjoy viewing this site through an app because when I'm on the go viewing this forums online site is not very fluid.

Put me down as missing this sorely.

Tapatalk has been reinstalled using version 4.4.1.  Fingers crossed the previous errors do not return.

Are there any plans for bringing Tapatalk support back?  The redirect ads on this site are driving me crazy.  About 50% of the time I'm reading a thread, I randomly get redirected to a junk ad site that it hard to back out of.  It makes reading this forum on mobile a miserable experience.

Does that happen to you on mobile specifically? It's been happening to me too, but I don't think it's UO, I think I have some kind of virus/malware/adware. I've been planning to do a factory reset on my (android) phone. It never happens to me on the computer.

It happens to me on mobile only.  I had the same initial thought as you and did a factory reset, but it didn't help, so I did some research.  It appears its a new "technique" rogue ads are using to redirect mobile browsers to a new page.  These rogue ads have made their way into Google AdSense, so many sites are now affected, UO included.

All the more reason that native apps are much better than mobile websites.

Do you get a lot of fake ads for Walmart gift cards? And worst of all, they talk? On my phone I get a loud "CONGRATULATIONS" after the redirect which of course is annoying if I'm in public.

It's happened to me before but it's gotten really bad the past couple of weeks.

Oh yeah, they're total old-lady-tricking EMERGENCY WINNER!!!! ads.

If you browse with Chrome mobile, there is a setting that reduces the frequency of those redirect ads. I still get them occassionly but not nearly as bad.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2017/11/08/heres-protect-rogue-redirect-ads-right-now-chrome/

The process only involves toggling a flag in Chrome's settings to 'Enabled,' and it works on both desktop and mobile. Just copy chrome://flags/#enable-framebusting-needs-sameorigin-or-usergesture and paste it in the address bar (you can't click/tap on it due to security concerns). Then just tap/click the highlighted dropdown menu, change it to 'Enabled,' and restart the browser when asked.

I actually just read that article this morning and tried that out.  I still got just as many ads on UO with it enabled.

Yep, those.  I have resorted to leaving the media volume all the way down to avoid embarrassment.

I will look into adding tapatalk support once again.

* It appears the tapatalk add-on has not been updated since 10/2016.  Meaning, it will not install/work properly.  Our upcoming site redesign will hopefully address the mobile version of the forum.  SMF 2.1 will be responsive and will allow the same user experience as the full site.  Alternatively, we could attempt to migrate to another forum software that is better suited for both full sites and mobile.  https://xenforo.com/ is one that I've been looking into.

This must be an android only issue, but is still a big no-no in my opinion.  I will disable the mobile ads.  We have to pay the bills, not at the expense of user experience.

ALL ads have been removed from the mobile version of the forum.  If you still get pop-up or any other ads, please let me know.

Thanks richNcincy[/member] !!!

Yes, thank you very much, Rich.  I haven't had a single redirect since you made the change.

Sorry for the ignornance

But shouldn't I be able to log in to tapatalk with my Urban Ohio Credentials? Because as of right now I can't.

I do not believe that is how it works.  You log into tapatalk with an account on that service.  Then you connect your other accounts (UO, etc.) by logging in to them via the app.  As a word of caution, I do not believe we will support tapatalk integration much longer on our site.  They do not update the required plugin very often and the one we use now is quite buggy.

We will stop supporting Tapatalk in the next month or so.  Please try the mobile version of the site instead. It’s actually quite nice for on the go viewing/posting.
