Posted January 6, 201114 yr I've been meaning to post these for awhile now, but never got around to it until tonight. I was killing some time in downtown Youngstown on a Saturday in early March of 2002, because I was waiting to catch the Greyhound to Cleveland for a friend's birthday party. So, I decided to take some pictures. (wish I had been more thorough) This was a few years before I even knew about "grit" and that I wasn't the only one who was interested in such things. I think downtown Youngstown has come a long way in the last 8 years and 10 months. What do you think? I wandered over from W. Federal to Boardman Street: I was intrigued by the far buildings in that last picture. So I went over to Market Ct. to investigate. These are my favorite pictures from that day. For better or worse, most of this doesn't exist anymore. Hope you enjoyed this short journey back in time.
January 6, 201114 yr Wow, great stuff. Downtown certainly has improved since then. Do you have any photos of the McKelvey's complex before it was demo'd in 2000?
January 6, 201114 yr Oh wow. I believe that was near the year of MayDay's Death Tour of Youngstown that I endured. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 6, 201114 yr Wow, great stuff. Downtown certainly has improved since then. Do you have any photos of the McKelvey's complex before it was demo'd in 2000? No, sorry. I took a lot of photos while in Europe in '98, but I didn't really get back into photography until 2006. It didn't even occur to me that I might want to photograph Youngstown until I had this spare time, and my camera with me. I'll see if the office has anything. Before I started working there, they were part of the team that was trying to save it.
January 6, 201114 yr Very good thread. I know this theater has been discussed several times on UO, but has the fate of this building been determined yet?
January 6, 201114 yr ^I'll fully believe it when I see it, but the city is supposed to demolish most of the building and save the facade. A parking lot for water dept. patrons will be constructed. (Funds from the water dept. were used to buy, and are being used to demolish the building.) But eventually, it's hoped that the space will be turned into an outdoor public space used for farmers markets, outdoor movie series, small concerts, etc.
January 7, 201114 yr ^The city is seeking a Clean Ohio grant, I believe to assist with the demo. I'm glad they are saved the facade on the State and plan to for the Paramount.
January 7, 201114 yr Amazing change since 2002. I believe you may have photographed downtown right at the end of its absolute depths. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
