Christie Lites, founded in Toronto in 1985, is the largest lighting-only company in North America. It focuses on rentals and production in six key market segments: Theater, Concert, Trade Show, TV & Film, Corporate Presentations and Special Events. https://www.christielites.com/about.htm

7000 Central Ave has been home to Cleveland Track Material, one of the nation's largest specialty track manufacturers in the USA. I've known their family for a long time and they've done a lot of work for Amtrak and other railroad companies and transit agencies. But Ohio isn't a big rail industry marketplace anymore for this growing business. A lot of Ohio's rail industry suppliers are closing their doors or moving to the coasts or to Illinois. They also get a lot of their steel from Ukraine and the East Coast is more accessible for their steel. The port of Cleveland costs too much for them.

Though I was opposed to the OC, I'm pleased there is interest in TOD, esp around the 2 79th Street Rapid stations as was mentioned in Steve Litt's piece the other day.  Not sure about specifics but any TOD is a good thing in my book... even if it took a stinkin' highway to get it done.

Surprised there's been no commentary on the transit-supportive planning going on around the Opportunity Corridor. Odd that it takes a road project to spur transit-supportive land-use planning!

A lot of the proponents commented often that it was quite likely, since it would make bus flow easier.

We have to keep up the pressure on them to deliver at least some of the promised benefits of the OC.

I have always been a proponent, because of the potential to transform the area around it, but we have to keep a spotlight on them so they dont wind up wasting this chance.

I'm trying to figure out exactly where this will be located. There isn't a parcel with the address 8005 Kinsman. But if there was, it would be roughly where the Boxspot development is proposed. See:

Since it’s my job to say the politically incorrect things, if this is at 80th and Kinsman I suspect they are being a little bit optimistic about shall we say “diversity”.

Looks like it will be a cool spot at night. Not sure exactly its positioning for shade, but I get the impression though that during the day in summer it will be a very hot and uncomfortable space. I could see having some sort of screen and maybe some light strung across the top between the two higher level containers.

New 'Thrive 105-93' plan shows room for plenty of growth on Cleveland's impoverished East Side (photos)

Posted on September 21, 2017 at 8:40 AM

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Investing $80 million in new streetscapes and public amenities along seven miles of East 105th from Garfield Heights to Bratenhal could spur redevelopment across the city's impoverished East Side, large portions of which are hollowed out with vacant lots and buildings.

Those investments are outlined in the city's new "Thrive 105-93" plan, an 18-month, $400,000 study funded by a major federal TIGER grant, short for Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery.

The plan, approved Friday by the planning commission, was authored by the city's planning department and a team of consultants including the Cleveland office of AECOM, a global engineering and design firm.

It's a 50-year vision, said Kenneth Sislak, an AECOM vice president and manager for transit and rail planning in the Americas.

First Look: PNC Glenville Arts Campus set for dedication Wednesday

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Khrys Shefton, director of real estate development at Famicos Foundation, admits she welled up as she watched contractors installing drywall this summer in the former Medical Associates Building in Glenville.

"At certain times, in certain moments, everything kind of hits you at once," she said Tuesday in an interview.

The renovation of the medical building as an apartment building, scheduled for completion this weekend, is a milestone for Glenville.

Built in 1962, the building, at 1464 East 105th St., was designed in the modernist style by Robert P. Madison, Ohio's first black registered architect.

A neighborhood in bloom: Kinsman residents plant the seeds for reinvention

Karin Connelly Rice | Thursday, October 19, 2017

The Kinsman/Central neighborhood on Cleveland’s east side has long been regarded as one of the poorest areas in the city—perhaps even the state—with little direction or hope for revival.

But with the help of nonprofit neighborhood development organization Burten, Bell, Carr Development (BBC), this once-thriving neighborhood is rediscovering its potential. Founded in 1990 to empower citizens and revitalize blighted and underserved areas, BBC has worked tirelessly to set Kinsman/Central on a positive trajectory—employing what executive director Tim Tramble calls a "multi-pronged" approach to community revitalization by enlisting a wide array of community partners to put dynamic projects in motion.

Almost two decades later, the organization is starting to see the work pay off. In light of its efforts, a community that many have disregarded as a lost cause is pulling itself up by the bootstraps and creating a pocket of Cleveland that is making strides in economic development, housing, and even farming.

Big difference.  If it already had investors fixing it, TJ Dow would be sticking his hand out at them, not for them.

Pretty much anyone is an improvement from Dow.

Anyone know the status of this one?  This is on the north side of Chester, close to the Clinic campus.  Personally one of my favorite buildings in Hough.

IMG_20180427_062945.jpg

Ugh. I literally just drove by that thinking "what a nice building if it could be fixed up". Very disappointing. It didn't register to me before that this was the site of that proposed development.

Why do these projects always seem to do the most possible damage? There's 3 or 4 large brick apartment buildings in the footprint that would be demolished if this was built.

Why do these projects always seem to do the most possible damage? There's 3 or 4 large brick apartment buildings in the footprint that would be demolished if this was built.

Can this be blocked by the planning commission if it goes before them? What frustrates me is we continue to fumble a neighborhood that has great mixed use potential. If they built the Chester part of Midtown up with PROPER mixed use developments (apartments w/retail, hotels etc.) they could create a vibrant neighborhood. Once that is built they could shrink the urban highway that is Chester avenue by placing a streetcar (MAJOR pipe dream) on it that feeds the businesses, apartments and retail that goes there. The side streets of Chester avenue have good historical bones that just need polishing and BOOM you have a great all around neighborhood with character.

I don't mind health/tech companies building there but if the stretch mainly includes offices with one or two apartment projects and no ground level activity then the neighborhood is useless after 5pm. I would have figured they could use Midtown as a spillover from University Circle slowly running out of room and build housing for the doctors, students and tech workers. Midtown can be a place where Health/Tech companies live but buildings with all around use and late night (safe) activity need to outnumber the 9-5 office buildings that are slowly popping up.

  • 3 weeks later...

Putting this here since there is no thread for Woodland Hills neighborhood. This is a pretty big project across the street from St Luke's Manor along MLK Drive between E.111th and E115th. 76 single family homes, about half market rate and half subsidized. The site plan is good. The houses themselves won't be anything to look at, if they look anything like the ones built next door, but they will probably be affordable.

Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, owner, and Saint Adalbert’s Catholic School, propose to erect a new

Pre-K through first grade, 12,800 square foot school building, including play areas and a 27 space

parking lot on a parcel that is zoned B2 Two-Family Residential District and Multi-Family Residential

District. The owner appeals for relief from the strict application of the following sections of the

Cleveland Codified Ordinances:

1. Section 337.02(f)(3)(A) which states that in residential districts, a school and its accessory

buildings and uses are permitted if approved by the Board of Zoning Appeals after public

notice and public hearing., and if adequate yard spaces and other safeguards to preserve the

character of the neighborhood are provided, and if in the judgment of the Board such

buildings and uses are appropriately located and designed and will meet a community need

without adversely affecting the neighborhood.

2. Section 337.05(f)(3)(A) which states that a public or private school must be located not less

than thirty feet from any adjoining premises in a Residence District; the proposed new school

building and accessory playground is approximately 10 to 14 feet from adjoining premises in

Residence District.

3. Section 357.14 which states that parking is not a permitted encroachment in the required front

yard area on East 83rd St.

4. Section 341.02 which states that Landmark Commission review and approval is required.

Anyone know what this parcel of land used to be? It is pretty close to the development on Euclid Ave above^.

Google Earth's time machine shows an apartment building that was torn down in about 2006.  Driveway was at about 1915 Cliffview and there's some online records of that address.

Glad to see that the focus is moving out of the core of Cleveland, some places just need it more.

Here's the graphics for Bob Deskins Park improvements. Question -- if there's the likelihood of a pedestrian cut-through, why not design into the park's improvements?? This happens all the time with parks...

And the Dollar General store, noted above, setback behind a lovely/useless strip of green that will become an muddy path as pedestrians cut across it. Lots of windowless, blank walls. So drab/sad....

SMH it's aggravating when plans include pretty pictures but don't include common sense where needed.

-Edit:  I believe Bob Deskins is the owner of a local demolition company.  With the amount of demos which have occurred on this corridor (and the amount of demos which are still needed), I find it a bit poetic that a park built on a vacant lot is named after him.  That's not to say his company hasn't addressed some of the problems this neighborhood and others on the east-side face... but it's ironic nonetheless.

More in regards to my post from April 26. Could this house be from the 1840s?
