January 15, 201114 yr Nice tour, just one correction - Waterville's upstream from Toledo. The Columbian House is one of the oldest buildings in the region; like the Oliver House in Toledo, it once housed travelers along the Ohio and Erie Canal.
January 15, 201114 yr Very nice; looks like the downtown caters to an upscale clientele. I've passed through there many times over the years on US 24 and often thought to take time to look around, but never have.
January 16, 201114 yr I have had plenty of beers at Shabers in Waterville which is just south of the main downtown area. In fact, I got my butt kicked by some guy who was hitting on my wife (at the time my girlfriend) there. He took it a bit too far, and I thought I would be all mocho about it. I ended up face down on the floor with a bloody nose and dragged out by my feet. My wife told me it was the thought that counted....quite embarassing to say the least.
January 17, 201114 yr Great shots. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 18, 201114 yr very good -- still looks nice as ever. my grandparents lived there one summer when they were young while my grandfather was building roads and highways -- he worked for ohio engineering. my grandmother said she liked it and said they used to put up a screen at the end of the main street on saturday nights and show movies. olde tyme small town fun!
January 18, 201114 yr ^Speaking of roads, a major rerouting of US 24 is well underway. It will no longer run through the town, but out in some cornfields.
January 18, 201114 yr The Colombian House is a great place for dinner....famous for their tomato pudding.
January 19, 201114 yr ^Speaking of roads, a major rerouting of US 24 is well underway. It will no longer run through the town, but out in some cornfields. Is the rerouting of US 24 something the town wanted? Just curious because it seems that would hurt downtown businesses. Kind of like all of the dead/dying towns you see along Route 66 after the highway bypassed all of them.
January 19, 201114 yr Reconstruction of US 24 between Toledo and Fort Wayne has been ongoing for a few years. The project is known as the Fort-to-Port Highway. The intent is to replace the two-lane highway with a four-lane divided highway. It's commerce-driven because of the number of heavy trucks that use the route.
January 20, 201114 yr A nice contrast to the all-too-depressing no-name small Ohio town. one of the prettiest rides in ohio is driving west of toledo right along the maumee river. you can look for the hidden little maumee canal houses in maumee, then watervillle, grand rapids, etc. to napoleon -- its pleasant. or was, hopefully its not overdeveloped along the riverside and ruined? cdawg?
January 20, 201114 yr ^Grand Rapids is beautiful and has actually become quite a tourist town. It is a great drive. It's one historic river town after another. It's not overdeveloped by any means. There are still all those great areas to climb down to the river. Parkland has actually expanded on both sides. The Maumee River and Lake Erie are the saving graces of Northwest Ohio. We'd all be nuts without them.
