Invincible was very uneven tonally. It goes from Archie to Attack on Titan to Dawson's Creek to Modern Day Snark. I can't say I really liked it but did get sucked in the show.

 

God almighty was some of that music cringey.

 

Edit: Dark Side of the Ring episodes 1 and 2 on Brian Pillman were incredible, with the second episode being heartbreaking and tear inducing at moments. Credit to the show's creators, they were EXTREMELY sensitive/diplomatic with Melanie Pillman (a physical and mental mess currently), as for years she was a complete monster towards her children/step children after Brian's death.

 

Brian Pillman Jr came out exceptionally likeable and forgiving, his aunt is a real life saint, a true role model, but you can see his other two sisters haven't quite recovered.

 

A ten out of ten episode. Great start to the season.

 

But oh boy, if the Pillman episode was sad, just wait for the Grizzly Smith one (Jake the Snake Roberts' dad). That one's going to be rough.

Just finished Rififi, and it's a banger. Dassin is in complete control of every frame. Also rewatched 400 Blows and Shoot the Piano Player, two of my favorite Nouvelle Vague titles.

I have not, but i see that The Painted Bird is both black and white *and* Czech, so I'm sure its brutal and soul-rending.

ok it poured rain late today, so i watched the 2019 czech movie the painted bird on hulu. how can i put this? its two and a half hours of the most unrelenting world war two depravity i have ever seen. good lord its beyond belief. absolutely not for the faint hearted. i literally had to curse out my friend who rec'd it in txts and take a freakin shower afterward. its based on an also sensational at the time jerzy kosinski novel from the 1960s. yes it has subtitles, but there is very, very little actual dialogue and the acting is great. there are a few recognizable actors as well, like harvey keitel, udo keir and stellan skarsgard. also, the stoic child actor who carries the plot is fantastic and the black and white cinematography is remarkable. is that worth watching this horror story, tho? and what was the point really? i dk.

That really was a classic sit-com. 

I am TRYING with Manifest. TRYING. But it feels so dated, so melodramatic, so networky...  

 

And Lucifer's musical... nope. I couldn't even get through that episode. 

 

Just give me season 6 of Peaky Blinders. I finished the series a few days ago and may rematch it soon. Tom Hardy's performance in particular is memorable and unique. And Arthur... that actor is something else. I just love doing impressions of him.

In the middle of "Good on Paper," which just came out on Netflix, starring renowned "Comedy Store Legend" stand-up comedian Illiiza Shlesinger in what seems to be a more reality-based rom-com with cameos from the likes of close friends of Iliza's like Margaret Cho. Very interesting show. Not making me laugh, though.

I just watched an old movie from 1993 called, "Falling Down." Wonderful movie. It's really strange... Most of what I would consider my top 5 movies of all time were made between 1992-1993. A Bronx Tale, Scent of a Woman, Falling Down... My Cousin Vinny. 

You're making me feel old David. Falling Down is just incredible, and Douglas was completely unrecognizable. Hell, I remember the trailers of the movie: "WAIT, YOU FORGOT YOUR BRIEFCASE". Hell, I remember the Siskel and Ebert review too.

 

Check out the Game. Asinine ending aside, it's near perfect.

 

Seed Money on Netflix isn't bad. After watching Kid Detective, I'm on an Adam Brody kick lately.

Mmmmm...maybe not. I don't really have a list; I haven't thought a whole lot about it and there's too many good movies but that time period has a lot of my favorites for some reason. If I had to make a list it would probably have to be by genre.

There is a website called Flickchart that just gives you two random movies and you pick which one you like better. You keep rating movies and it ranks them for you. Pretty cool. FWIW, my top 3, according to Flickchart rankings, are Chinatown, Rashomon, and North By Northwest.

I'd say a good way to evaluate a "favorite movie" is you can still watch it today with the same captivation as you did when you were younger.

 

Example: I loved Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Animal House, the Goonies and Batman '89 with all my heart as a kid and teen, but when I watch them now, they're just... fine. Perhaps I've overwatched them? Whatever the reason, I just don't go out of my way to see them. They've run their course.

 

If I were to point out a few favorites, meaning those that have the most rewatchability for the longest period to this day, it would have to be:

 

The Burbs 

The Hard Way - perhaps my favorite of all time

Jacob's Ladder

Heavy Metal

 

Not that I do, but I can watch those almost every day without being bored.

for another oldie that is easy to have on tv on weekend afternoons between sports is the silly, snappy talk comedy classic his girl friday. i read that apparantly the actors would often bust out laughing and they would have to stop shooting after speaking their lines so fast.

 

and speaking of sports, its pretty much impossible to beat the indiana trilogy for sports movies, breaking away, hoosiers and rudy.

Seventh Seal is great. Too bad he ripped off the whole chess scene thing from Maya Deren (jk). His Girl Friday is also great. However, we all know the best sports movie of all time is Major League. You should check out Flickhart, @mrnyc. Maybe it will make you dethrone Bergman!

You don't think those are some of the greatest movies of all time? Have you seen them all? I could FOR SURE watch them all again and have a fun night. I'm just not immersed in movies like a lot of movie buffs, I guess, but I thoroughly enjoy those. I've seen movies like A Bronx Tale, Dog Day Afternoon, Scent of a Woman, ...And Justice For All, Falling Down, My Cousin Vinny, etc. countless times. For whatever reason, Al Pacino and Robert Deniro are my favorite actors even though the movies they are in are somewhat cliche. I just like them...I don't know. Like anyone else though, I don't know what I don't know. I'm open to suggestions for other great movies. I'm pretty confident in saying my favorite movie is Scent of a Woman. It's funny when I tell people that... the title makes it sound like a chick-flick. I usually get blank stares.

Also, I'm probably in the minority but I think comedies are horribly underrated. Another of my favorites is "Due Date." The movie is an absolute classic. I still watch it from time to time and laugh my @ss off every single time.

I saw Fatherhood on Netflix. It's pretty good. Based on a true story. Kevin Hart is actually a pretty good actor. He's a way better actor than he is funny.

i said i like all your movies david and i totally agree they are watchable over and over. that does make them great in a way, but best of all time? no, but hey thats just my opinion. 

 

take scent of a woman for example, of course the pacino speech is famous, but the plot? no. reminds me of that famous star trek tng episode where wesley got booted out of starfleet academy.

 

if want to get into serious film, as opposed to movies, check out the criterion collection listings and watch them a-z. those are the world cinema classics. or watch any documentary scorcese does when he just talks about cinema. not that i dont like tons lots of other movies though!

So far I'm somewhat enjoying Marianne although the first two episodes were a bit uneven. Just make sure to watch it in French with English captions.

 

 

Speaking of the French, I'm enjoying Lupin on Netflix.

Holy cow Schmigadoon! on Apple+ is AMAZING. Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong are a modern couple stuck in an old school musical. If you enjoy musical theater you’ll love it. 

I must admit, I'm enjoying the Fear Street movies far more than I'd have thought.

I have mixed feelings about Dune. I like Denis Villeneuve a lot - Enemy is one of my favorite movies - but I also liked the original Dune (even though David Lynch wasn't happy because he didn't get final cut). It's a pleasant, nostalgic film for me.  It will probably be a fine movie, but I feel like the talent is wasted on a remake when he could have spent the time working on something new.

I love the original and am looking forward to this... but it does feel like most audiences will avoid. They certainly did for the last Blade Runner, and that was pre-covid and concurrent streaming.

 

That 170 million budget plus marketing costs are going to be a problem.

Ok suicide squad fans I have questions:

 

Is this a reboot?

Or a continuation of the previous flop?

Does it spend half the movie introducing everyone like the other SS did?

 

I think those questions alone are enough to keep most people away.

This is a soft reboot, in which it is technically a sequel to the original but basically starts over. There are only about 4 or 5 returning characters. Stylistically, I'd say this is more a sequel to the Birds of Prey movie, which I didn't hate but got bored halfway through.

 

The first Suicide Squad was an enormous success, though a critical flop. If the studio ever releases an Ayers cut, well, it certainly can't be much worse. 

 

The introductions are done in the first 10 or 15 minutes. 

 

It really sucks that the film is a bomb. I can't oversell how enjoyable the movie is, especially if you like Troma films.

LOL, I love Troma movies, but I wouldn't use them as a favorable comparison to a $100+ studio soft reboot. Then again, I also have not enjoyed any of the DC movies, save certain portions of the first Wonder Woman.

Getting away from comic book movies, I finally peeped Throne of Blood, and can confirm its greatness. I know its not Wages of Fear, @mrnyc, but I will get to that soon enough.

Just finished watching "It's a Sin" on HBO.   As a gay man who came of age in the 80s, I thought it was really well done.  Had some flashbacks and shed a few tears along the way.

totally agree. i liked the lynch version a lot even though it wasn’t what he wanted it to be. i am sure this version of dune will be fine, although probably only appealing to fans, because enemy and arrival are great and you can tell villeneuve is a quality movie maker. but yeah i cant help wondering what villeneuve could have been doing instead of tackling the fussy old beast that is dune.

 

btw its supposed to be two movies, so it will follow the novel pretty well i think and i am looking forward to it.

Dear God was Tenet awful. Boring, unwatchable, unlikable characters, actors mumbling with poor/no ADR, exceptionally confusing. Even the score was crap.

 

Maybe there's a decent movie somewhere with a better edit, but this was a MESS. I couldn't make it past 90 minutes.

I have seen Hidden Fortress. Definitely lesser Kurosawa, but fun for the connections you mentioned.

How come I've never seen Silicon Valley before? This show is fantastic. 

 

Good seeing Gabe as a nice guy too.

 

It reminds me of Party Down just a little.
