December 29, 20213 yr I'm watching Tiger King on Netflix. My takeaway: America should have stayed a British colony.
December 29, 20213 yr We're watching Yellowstone right now. I like it. Fast with individual confrontations, but follows an overall storyline. IMO Kevin Costner is great in it!
December 29, 20213 yr I've been watching a bunch of stuff on Netflix lately. Squid Games was great and I watched another Korean show called Hellbound that I enjoyed. I also really enjoyed Maid. One of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Currently I'm watching the Cowboy Bebop anime. I've never really watched much anime before, and figured this would be a good one since it doesn't have that many episodes, and it's so highly regarded. I'm really enjoying it so far.

OG Bebop is the creme de la creme of anime. It takes a bit to get going, but after eipsode 5 everything clicks and it really hits its stride. Pierrot le Fou and Mushroom Samba are two of my favorite episodes.
January 7, 20223 yr What are everyone's thoughts on Don't Look Up? I find the different reactions people are having to it amazing. I thought it was comical, brilliant and a little too real all at once! Edited January 7, 20223 yr by Clefan98

I thought it was comical, brilliant and a little too real all at once! i thought it was shrill and jumpy and too on the nose, so we couldnt watch it all the way through. also its long, so we watched in two sittings. good thing is its easy to stop and jump back into at any point. its like they had these stars and filmed these scenes, so they just left everything in. could have been tightened up quite a bit, but then again i do like ramblely movies sometimes too. just a matter of taste and how you feel at the moment i guess. all that that said, it certainly wasnt bad either. i enjoyed it ok and laughed along at some of it. tepid thumbs up.
January 7, 20223 yr The movie's budget was allegedly only 75M, which means those stars appeared in it for free...hmmm...
January 8, 20223 yr Letterkenny is dangerously addictive. I may not go to bed until Sunday at the rate I'm watching these episodes.

We don't do satire very well these days; but I suspect the director assumed that if it had been more subtle folks would have taken it literally. Remember: It's the Year of the Snake
January 12, 20223 yr Caught up with Titane this past saturday at the Cinematheque. Pretty good, but I think Raw was better overall. I was hoping for more Tetsuo and less Boys Don't Cry. She also could've leaned harder into the Gozu-esque ending.

The first season was a bit slow and took the longest to get through. From season 2 on, we have been watching a show or two almost every day.
January 17, 20223 yr Season 5 of Search Party has been surreal crap so far. Unless things get dramatically better (mid-episode 3), they should have ended at season 4. Peacemaker was fun. Righteous Gemstones coming up tonight. Edit: All done with Search Party. What a truly horrible, abomination that absurdist sh*t of a final season. On every level it was terrible and disappointing, and the producers/creators/actors/writers should be ashamed. Edited January 18, 20223 yr by TBideon
February 8, 20223 yr Superstore is a perfect COVID show. Light, charming, an easy watch. It has that Good Place, Brooklyn 99, Parks and Recreation, etc, positive vibe. The pilots of American Auto and Abbott Elementary were serviceable. I'll give them another shot at some point. Luther is fine, at least through three episodes. But it hasn't really captured me. 17 episodes to go, I guess. Peacemaker is fun at times, and perhaps has the greatest opening credits ever, but it can be a bit of a chore to watch. I suspect the show thinks it's much more clever and witty than it really is. Still a huge fan of the proper Suicide Squad movie from which it spun off. Carnivale is a little like Luther. It's fine, but after 8 episodes my interest is waning. The best part of the show is Clancy Brown's voice. The last Sunny season was enjoyable, felt fresh, and Charlie hit it out of the park with an out-of-character dramatic performance in the finale. Between that and Mac's Dance, the show still works moooooooostly. Nightmare Alley is a great movie. Highly recommend. Edited February 8, 20223 yr by TBideon
February 18, 20223 yr Goodbye Peacemaker. I didn't love the first season, but didn't hate it either. A solid B- with an A+ opening credits. Been marathoning X-Files while skipping over the sh*t episodes. Boy there were some bad ones out there. Next up: Severance, Inventing Anna, finishing Luther, rewatching Another Life. then season 2... hmmm... sooner or later I'll commit to the Wire.
March 4, 20223 yr Gilded Age completely redeems Cynthia Dixon from the epic nightmare that shall never be named. Great show too.
March 6, 20223 yr Abbott Elementary - Amazing Love after Lockup and Married at First Sight are garbage but so crazy Euphoria The Witcher - I wanted more Love is Blind - Season 2 should have been titled, "Love is Bland". Cam and Lauren from season 1, are so loved, their popularity has made it so any subsequent season is/will be a fail at launch. The Gilded Age - The costumes are everything! This is us - Yellowjackets Dragrace - There are so many franchises and so much drama The Mandalorian I can't wait for Obi-Wan Kenobi The Boys - I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show.
March 7, 20223 yr The wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the new Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy on Disney Plus. Very funny. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?
March 7, 20223 yr Yeah, I just saw Free Guy yesterday and it was great. I also just saw The Batman which I also enjoyed. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
March 7, 20223 yr Encanto was very charming. Great music, animation style, layered characters, etc. There was a lot of nuance too. Well done Disney!
March 18, 20223 yr The Tourist was watchable. Righteous Gemstones amazing. Raised by Wolves episode one isn't exactly riveting. This requires more rum. Edit: nevvvvvvvvvver mind. This show is great! Edited March 18, 20223 yr by TBideon

April 11, 20223 yr Dunkirk was wonderful, but I'm not sure about Nolan's choice to keep the beach so pristine and tranquil. Where was all the equipment? The hardware? The dead and injured bodies? The 400,000 soldiers? You see a few thousand soldiers patiently waiting in single lines, and that's it! My god, the city looked perfectly in-tact outside of some random black smoke in places. Watch the 5-minute Dunkirk scene in Atonement. Now THAT was closer to the actual horror. Also, Legion Season 2 is BORING. Edited April 11, 20223 yr by TBideon

April 11, 20223 yr I read that too, but you would think with Nolan's skill, he'd employ some techniques to really show the gravity of the events. Dunkirk was a very good movie - as a movie, but it's so far apart from the reality of the events that it's practically science fiction. Edited April 11, 20223 yr by TBideon

April 25, 20223 yr I have to believe there have been similar attempts before, but Episode 7 of Only Murders in the Building was revolutionary.
April 27, 20223 yr Finally got around to watching The Imitation Game on Netflix. Very well done imho. It was too bad they didn't go more in-depth with Dayton, Ohio's role in solving the Nazi code, but also kind of understandable. You can only fit so much in a film. Fascinating history to say the least. Like Alan Turing, Joseph R. Desch faced a life of adversity during and after his work heading the team in Dayton. Also it must be noted that women played a significant role as "WAVES" (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in Dayton during World War II secretly assembling the machines to decode ENIGMA. https://www.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/contributors/2015/01/14/film-snubs-ohioans-role-breaking-enigma/21770275/ Edited April 27, 20223 yr by surfohio
May 27, 20223 yr Watched Severance in 3 days. Absolutely wonderful show. And I marathoned "From" in 3 days as well. Very enjoyable show, though with some odd acting choices. The little kid is remarkably bad even for a kid, and the actress who plays Sara.... yikes. Edited May 31, 20223 yr by TBideon
June 5, 20223 yr My god... the Orville has completely stolen material from Star Trek. This isn't homage or parody so much as copy-and-paste. And the show forgets to be a comedy sometimes. That said, it's far better than the nightmarish Picard and Discovery series, though I've heard the latter gets better. Still unsure about starting the Pike one. Also, Raised by Wolves was canceled. Damn.
June 9, 20223 yr I'm almost all caught up on the Orville. It certainly had found its foot and transitioned from lazy remake to homage/spiritual successor to Star Trek. A remarkable turnaround. "Home" really demonstrated McFarlane's talent. Edited June 9, 20223 yr by TBideon
June 9, 20223 yr I've been rewatching "Scorpion" after turning a friend on to it. It occurred to me if MacGuyver had a daughter who was half Korean and (probably) had Asperger's, she'd be Happy Quinn.
June 9, 20223 yr i watched a very gripping classic war movie on the movies! channel, which was showing war movies for the d-day anniversary. ‘decision before dawn’ was tremendous. its a spys behind the enemy lines story at the end of the war, based on real stories. great script, insanely gritty and suspenseful, well filmed and edited. it was shot almost documentary style in germany on location shortly after the war in 1950 and released in 1951. your stars are oskar werner and richard baseheart. do not miss this magnificent movie, its truly one of the best war movies of all time.
June 9, 20223 yr S3 might of been Stranger Things worst, S4 might be it’s best to this point. Just saying. 🦖 Myles approved (probably).
June 10, 20223 yr Orville season 3 got the ol' Hulu budget upgrade. Perhaps they can take a look at Raised by Wolves or Expanse sometime, both effectively cancelled. However, I am wondering if McFarlane is a stand-up guy in real life. He inexplicably fires a young, attractive, lead actress early season 2, hires another within two epiosdes to replace her (same extensive alien make-up, different wig), and is apparently dating the newest hire, a young instagram model/actress 20 years his junior. Not saying he's as close to being Me Too'd as Jared Leto (hovering on the periphery), but it is a little distracting. Edited June 10, 20223 yr by TBideon
June 13, 20223 yr somebody leaving the firm rec'd this show severance to my spouse, so she watched the first episode last night and it freaked her out. the plot is a about a dystopian company in the future where when you go in the office you forget your outside life and when you go home you forget your office life. maybe he was trying to tell her something? 😂
June 17, 20222 yr Ah Orville... if anyone wants the true Trek feeling, give it a shot. Episode 3 of season 3 felt like the glory days of TNG and DS9. Also, Barry season finale was.. a tad underwhelming. Great season otherwise. I'm re-watching Taboo as well. Frankly, it's a bit boring. Soon Peaky Blinders season 6. Soon. July 13, 20222 yr The Bear is terrific. Watched all 8 episodes in 2 days Orville season 3 is mostly good. The Boys season 3 the best one yet The Thaw is pretty good. I couldn't get into the Old Man. Will try again in the next few weeks. Still need to start Love, Sex Robots. Maybe this weekend
July 18, 20222 yr there is a new studio ghibli anime film out, its called the deer king. its not by the late hayao miyazaki of course, but one of the two directors was his anime director for princess mononoke, so it would seem to be in good hands: more: https://hyperallergic.com/747481/the-deer-king-anime-review/ trailer:

July 19, 20222 yr I binged the entire three seasons of The Boys on Amazon Prime the last couple of weeks. Excellent show, though I'm sure some won't enjoy the societal commentary. I'm also going through Seinfeld in full for the first time. I've seen a lot of episodes, but never sequentially. There are a lot more seasons-long plot points than I realized.
