August 30, 20159 yr I have a Netflix series for you. It's an awesome show. It's called Peaky Blinders and it stars Cillian Murphy. It's about an Irish gang in 1920s Birmingham England. Only six shows to each season and there's only two seasons released right now. They're working on a third season.
October 9, 20159 yr Just marathoned Life's Too Short. Oh my god is this show funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsKxXOqXWds

Only six shows to each season and there's only two seasons released right now. They're working on a third season. I realize that I'm responding to a post from a while ago, but I second this recommendation. I LOVE Boardwalk Empire, and Peaky Blinders might somehow be even better than BE. One qualm with the post - the gang that the show centers on is super duper NOT Irish. They are very English, with Irish characters as many of their chief enemies. For a (much) lighter option that is pretty relevant to much of what we discuss on UO, I submit for your consideration the comedy 'Dreamland'. There are only 2 eight-episode seasons on Netflix at the moment, but it centers on an Australian infrastructure think-tank in Melbourne called the Nation Building Authority. It is extremely dry and it takes a couple of episodes to really fall in love with the characters, but once you get your bearings, it is easy to crush all 16 episodes without realizing it.
May 10, 20169 yr I finally made the jump into the world of streaming tv. I have Amazon Prime and was finally able to watch The Wire and Treme. I didn't think I'd be interested in watching shows from 5, 10 years ago. Curb Your Enthusiasm is really great even if Larry David has some odd acting quarks. Something current that UO'ers might like is Show Me a Hero on HBO. It's about the simple task of introducing 200 units of low income housing to (east) Yonkers, NY.
June 1, 20169 yr We just finished watching Breaking Bad, which the first show we ever (semi) binged watched on Netflix. I really enjoyed it, of course. Now we have to pick a new one to start watching. So many choices. I saw Peaky Blinders and that is definitely a possibility. But there are so many critically acclaimed shows over the past decade or so that I never watched. Mad Men, The Wire, NCIS, The West Wing, Friday Night Lights, Sons of Anarchy, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Daredevil, Sherlock, etc. Or do I flow straight into Better Call Saul? I am going to have to give it some thought. Out of the ones I listed (and I know I probably can't go wrong), which is the best?

I am going to have to give it some thought. Out of the ones I listed (and I know I probably can't go wrong), which is the best? Mad Men and The Wire are both generally great wire to wire (no pun intended), although if I recall some people didn't like one of the later seasons of The Wire that focused on the local newspaper. No interest in NCIS. Friday Nights Lights was very good, that's a good binge watch. I really liked Sons of A, but it fell off somewhat and got repetitive as the seasons went on. Early seasons were awesome. I'd say same of House of Cards. I absolutely love Better Call Saul, one of my favorites on TV right now.
June 1, 20169 yr Better Call Saul season 2 was really good, you won't go wrong there. The Wire is an amazing show. Sherlock is smart and engaging. Those would be my choices. I enjoy the characters, camaraderie and pacing in NCIS but I don't think it's necessarily the kind of show that has to be viewed in chronological order. Mad Men is a much better show, but it's also depressing. NCIS won't ever depress anyone, it's just light and fun in comparison. Sons of Anarchy is a train wreck imho. You eventually get to the point where you just expect all of the main characters to die. Because they are so recklessly stupid. Oh, I don't know anyone else who watched this show but I thought Spartacus was very good (8.6/10 imdb). Finally if you are into shows where the writers and the actors are totally in sync with how ridiculously terrible t.v. can be, try True Blood.
June 1, 20169 yr The Leftovers Season 2 was just incredible and the best TV I've seen in a long, long time but you have to suffer through a rather pedestrian Season 1 for the setup and it's going to be cancelled after next season. Totally worth it though, IMHO. But the wife and I are weird and with all the options available we're slowly re-watching ye ancient Oz. So take the advice with a grain of salt.

I think it got ignored because of how hyper-violent it was. Agree with everybody else for the most part: The Wire and Mad Men are at the top of the heap for me. I'll throw one more out there even tho it's a comedy: Peep Show.
June 1, 20169 yr I thought first season of Daredevil was ok, but I'm learning (as I try to slog through season 2) that it was more because of D'onofrio's portrayal of Fisk than because of the heroes. I'm about 3 episodes into season 2 and I've decided that Murdock is a sanctimonious a$$hat and I enjoy his getting beatdown more than when he wins. In a similar genre, I really enjoyed Jessica Jones. I started watching Breaking Bad, but I have to take it in doses. I find Walter White'e relationship with his wife exhausting. I still mean to finish it because as I understand it the best is yet to come, but, man, shut up Skyler. I did enjoy the first two seasons of OITNB. There's some great characters in that story. Same with House of Cards, although I thought that dropped off in season 3. Last year I binged the first two seasons of Orphan Black on Amazon. I really liked the idea behind the show. It's not spectacular, but it's good easy watching and doesn't take itself too seriously (Daredevil, I'm looking at you....god am I irritated by that show now!!) I haven't gone beyond the pilot for Sherlock. I liked it a lot, just haven't had a chance to dig into it yet. I may abort Daredevil and start with that one instead. I just realized as I type this that everything I'm watching is on Netflix (with the exception of Orphan Black). Why am I still paying for cable?
June 1, 20169 yr Ha. You're supposed to hate Skylar and her sister, at least for the first several seasons. Those women are unbearable. I thought Breaking Bad was different than most shows as it got better each season, whereas the rest start out epic and then drag as you get closer to the finale. One great thing about the show is the blending of antagonists and protagonists. It's very subjective in that respect IMO. The wife and I are currently debating who actually was what The Leftovers Season 2 was just incredible and the best TV I've seen in a long, long time but you have to suffer through a rather pedestrian Season 1 for the setup and it's going to be cancelled after next season. Totally worth it though, IMHO. But the wife and I are weird and with all the options available we're slowly re-watching ye ancient Oz. So take the advice with a grain of salt. I might be in e minority, but I loved season 1 of the Leftovers and didn't care too much for the second season. The first season was reminiscent of those first few seasons of Lost, which might be my favorite show of all time (no, the ending did not change my mind). Carrie Coon's performance as Nora was one of the best I've ever seen. The theme music fit perfectly. That mannequin scene gave me that feeling like the end of Se7en, where I wanted to hurt those people myself. "Those are not our dogs"... epic ending to the first show. And I appreciated Kevin a lot more when there was so much uncertainty about his sanity. The whole town of Mapleton was just a hair away from snapping all season and that came across well. I was upset when the producers announced a reboot
June 2, 20169 yr Bloodline on Netflix is amazing, really digging S2. Peaky Blinders, amazing. Daredevil, amazing. A show that caught me off guard is Cuckoo. I haven't laughed that hard (by myself) in a long time! There's an episode in S2 where there's a funeral and the character that died borrowed a rare book. So, the main character was trying to steal it back while attending the funeral ... all hell breaks loose.

I was upset when the producers announced a reboot Yeah, I don't have anything against Season 1 but my wife hated it which has probably jaded my view a bit. She thought the Guilty Remnant was over the top. The Patty story arc between the seasons was awesome. I love the subtle way water was used as a link to bridge this existence and the next in Season 2. Fascinating to me. I guess Season 3 will only be eight episodes but I can't complain though. If not for the protests Season 2 would have been it. I loved Lost too even with an ending without all the answers. Both of these shows tie science and the spiritual together in such clever ways. Very unique TV. The Missing, a BBC One/Starz joint venture about a British child who is abducted in France and the events that follow, was another show we enjoyed but I fear the second season will be a big disappointment because it's a complete reboot.

It really took me out of the moment a lot.
June 6, 20169 yr Bloodline on Netflix is getting insanely good, so if you haven't started it - check it out.
June 6, 20169 yr Bloodline on Netflix is getting insanely good, so if you haven't started it - check it out. We finished the first season, and two episodes into the second. So far, we're liking season 1 better. We finished Revenge on Netflix about a month ago. We both liked it.
June 6, 20169 yr We went with Friday Night Lights as our next show. About 5 episodes in and so far, so good. I like the Oliver Stone style cinematography
June 6, 20169 yr One reason I recommended Peaky Blinders above is how short and sweet it is so far. Each season is only 6 episodes, and there are only two seasons on Netflix thus far, but it still manages to be immensely satisfying. Good place to start for someone who doesn't have much time to binge watch or who is just diving into Netflix.

Definitely intense! Those Rayburns sure are dysfunctional.
June 8, 20169 yr I know this more of a TV thread, but we went to a screening of Warcraft last night. Perhaps it was because I was expecting silly fantasy rubbish, boy, was I surprised. A very good story line, amazing writing, excellent effects, awesome acting by a bunch of mostly no-names. I never played the game, but felt this script does its part to appeal to the fans of the game as well as those who never played. I came out thinking about the similarities to Star Wars Ep. IV: script, effects, no-name actors. It is completely set-up to be a great franchise.
June 8, 20169 yr Shamless (the US version); an excellent black comedy of a very poor & dysfunctional white family in the slums of present-day Chicago, featuring William H. Macy as the alcoholic father. Moving our way through season 5 right now. It's a shame that it's only available streaming on Showtime :/ Or you could rent it from your local library :)
June 8, 20169 yr I watched the entire UK version, and want to watch the US version, but I don't have Showtime or Hulu :( I might actually try the Library option...
June 8, 20169 yr We used the library to rent and watch both seasons of Fargo, which were excellent BTW
June 8, 20169 yr I've been using the library a lot to borrow "new" movies when they come out on DVD and saving a lot of money this way. Things I'm watching or watched lately that I've enjoyed: The Americans on Amazon Prime Roots (2016) on History The Eighties on CNN Silicon Valley on HBO I see the Peaky Blinders season 3 is up, so I'll probably binge my way through that this weekend.
June 15, 20168 yr I am excited for another season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I was a big, big fan. However, I would sacrifice that and whatever else followed what was supposed to be the finale, which IMHO would've been the greatest ending to a TV series since Bob Newhart waking up from the "dream" he had about some hotel, the cousins Darrell, etc. This is how I wanted to imagine Larry living out the rest of his life.... Look at how genuinely happy and at peace he looks. He no longer has a nagging wife and no children. He found a family who accepts him for who he is and defends him when others take issue with something he did instead of constantly piling on like that bee'yatch Cheryl. I remember watching that finale, with less than 5 minutes to go and Larry watching Cheryl dance with her new man, thinking they can't end the series like this. And then..... [EDIT - apparently none of the Youtube clip of the final scene will embed, so just go here https://www.google.com/#tbm=vid&q=curb%20your%20enthusiasm%20season%206%20finale and watch either of the first two hits] Why did they have to mess with that? Still bothers me.
June 15, 20168 yr Just started renting out seasons of Shameless (US version) from the library and got through two episodes last night. So far the show has been nearly identical to the UK version. I wonder how much it will branch off as the show goes on.

Having not seen the UK version, I did some quick googling and saw that season 1 and season 2 are extremely similar, but the US version widely diverges in season 3 and continues to be divergent.
June 16, 20168 yr I watched maybe four or five seasons of Shameless but stopped at some point because it just became too unrealistic. And some of the characters really became annoying in how they were so, uh, arrogant I guess would be the right word?

June 16, 20168 yr Watched the first episode of Bloodline last night. Very intriguing. I wish I hadn't read the season one story arc on Wikipedia. But intriguing none the less.
July 11, 20168 yr I wish there was more, but holy crap Bo Burnham's one hour special "Make Happy" was simply amazing. Whether or not you are familiar with Bo's previous work, this was a very introspective/outrospective look at entertainment today and the relationship between entertainer and audience. The last 15 or so minutes are utterly brilliant and a very fitting farewell to this stage of his career. In my opinion, Bo is on another level from any other comedian we've seen in a long, long time. I ended my viewing the first time full of laughs but also some serious questions to think about, and have rewatched several times. We'll never know how truly honest any performer is on stage, but I have a feeling this was about as close as we'll ever see to true honesty, especially the monologue before the final song. There are just so many deep meanings and so much his lyrics represent, both for the audience but especially with him as an entertainer. It was so well done. Very Stable Genius
July 11, 20168 yr "The Night Of" - a new HBO mini series - premiered last night. Seems like this is going to be a really good one, even by HBO's standards.

July 11, 20168 yr Turns out the US version of Shameless was added to Netflix over the 4th of July weekend (Seasons 1-4) so no more library rentals for me!
July 12, 20168 yr ^Yeah, I'm on episode 6 and I'm still intrigued. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
July 15, 20168 yr Marco Polo, slow start, but my God ... SE 2 was insanely awesome! I couldn't stop watching after episode 5 or so.
July 15, 20168 yr I've been re-watching the series Louie (tv show). Something I rarely do. It's just a great mix of humor and weirdness. The shows barely run 20 mins. so I can gorge on them. I haven't seen Louis CK's latest, Horace and Pete, since it only seems to be avail. by paid dl. I'd like to think one of the streaming services will pick it up.
July 21, 20168 yr Has anyone checked out "Stranger Things" on Netflix? I was not expecting it to be that good, but I was blown away for sure!
July 27, 20168 yr ^I have not, but I'm curious as to other people's impressions of it. I thought about watching it but really haven't heard anything good or bad about it.
July 28, 20168 yr Marco Polo, slow start, but my God ... SE 2 was insanely awesome! I couldn't stop watching after episode 5 or so. The series was a slow start. I stopped watching it after the first three episodes and then picked it back up again. Yeah, episode 5 on was great.
July 28, 20168 yr ^I have not, but I'm curious as to other people's impressions of it. I thought about watching it but really haven't heard anything good or bad about it.
