October 8, 20204 yr I tried giving Away a chance and couldn't get past episode 2. Maybe it picks up, maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but it was booooooooring. Meanwhile Bates Motel season 1 is a hell of a ride. Sort of a modern re-imagination of David Russell's "Spanking the Monkey" but with more murder.

October 20, 20204 yr Sigh... and I really wanted to like Haunting of Bly House. Good performances aren't enough sometimes. It just wasn't that interesting and certainly not scary.
October 20, 20204 yr I finally started Twin Peaks, and it's definitely... Lynchian (is that a word?). Everyone gives off strong Flannery O'Connor vibes, except in rural Washington instead of the Deep South. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”
November 9, 20204 yr Penny Dreadful - what an abrupt ending. They spend all this time world and character building, and for what? A pretty boring and anti-climatic final fight scene too.
November 12, 20204 yr Now that it's over I am finally watching through The Good Place. Holy Moley what a great little show. It won me over with the "remaining loyal to the browns" as a positive point!

November 12, 20204 yr oh wait i did binge a whole anime series on netflix this summer -- evangelion, a top anime from the 1990s. that was ok.

November 12, 20204 yr The director's real life breakdown is pretty apparent in that last episode. Plus the show ran out of budget, I believe. Try Trigun, Escaflowne, Helsing, Attack on Titan, Outlaw Star, Berzerk, and of course Cowboy BeBop. Those are all pretty consistent. The parallel anime movies are damn good too. Edited November 12, 20204 yr by TBideon
November 12, 20204 yr Trigun was meh for me, Escaflowne was pretty cool. Berserk is fun. Cowboy Bebop is the gold standard for all animated stuff for me, Pixar included.
January 8, 20214 yr ... and now I am on to "The Boys". I am 2 episodes in and starting ep3, HOLY CRAP!

January 8, 20214 yr I recently binged The Flight Attendant on HBOMax which i thought was very good. My wife and I are currently watching Mad Men which we are both enjoying. I know we are way behind on this one.
January 8, 20214 yr I'm rewatching the Expanse to prep for season 5. It's much better the second time around, since there are a lot of names, locations, and difficult accents, which made the first watch a little confusing. Also, I'm almost done with Better Call Saul, which I'm enjoying far more than Breaking Bad, a show I never quite got. And before I forget, there is this show on Prime called Gym Shorts, and within 30 seconds, a minute TOPS, you know it is horrible. Unwatchable. Lame. Boring. Failed comedy comedy. Horrible sound and set design. It makes Neil Breen movies look like Shakespeare. There needs to be a word, a specific genre, for this kind of terrible, unprofessional s-hit -- but sometimes you just need to watch a show in disbelief.

I watch these kinds of shows with subtitles on for this reason. I'm still working on Game of Thrones...could never make it without the subs!
January 8, 20214 yr Hah, I'm actually using subtitles too. Boy it's a lot easier to understand those Belter-Creole accents now.
January 8, 20214 yr I had to use subtitles when I watched the British Office and Shameless. Combining the thick accents, often low speaking, and use of obscure (to me) British slang, it was hard to follow until I put on subtitles.

January 8, 20214 yr The writers for America 2021 brought some of their big storylines out early. Very Stable Genius
January 23, 20214 yr So far season three of Cobra Kai is BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING. Getting through episode four is a struggle. Thank god for the flashbacks. Who the hell remembers Karate Kid Does Japan anyone? Edit: It gets better by episode 5 and really good by 6. I guess I'll finish the show tonight after all. Edited January 23, 20214 yr by TBideon
January 27, 20214 yr Season 5 Episode 4 of the Expanse has multiple holy sh-t moments. Wow. Edited January 27, 20214 yr by TBideon
February 1, 20214 yr Friday's new episode of Wandavision is TOO DAMN FAR AWAY. This show is dangerously addicting. 2/2 edit: Just finished Season 5 of the Expanse. Definitely an improvement over 4. WHEN IS 6?????????????? Edited February 3, 20214 yr by TBideon
February 6, 20214 yr Episode 5 of Wandavision was wonderful. Uggg, I have to wait another damn week for episode 6?? Hawkeye and Falcon/Winter Soldier look so dull, uninspiring, unnecessary in comparison. Just a poor man's Jason Bourne.

Season two was definitely better than the third. Season two really ended with a cliff hanger. I had to wait over a year to see the next season. You can tell the writers are big fans of the original series and the characters are so complex that you don't even know who you should root for. The Kreese flashbacks were really cool and explained quite a lot (particularly my suspicion that Cobra Kai wasn't Karate, but Tang Soo Do. I suppose Karate has become a colloquialism.) Everyone keeps talking about Wandavision. I'm going to have to check it out. It's on Disney+? Not sure I want to sign up for it just for one show. February 6, 20214 yr Prime Video is so underrated. They have a lot of interesting documentaries. I was watching Unacknowledged and Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind late last night and it started REALLY freaking me out! Seeing all of that footage of UFOs and alien beings late at night when I'm about to go to sleep, knowing I could be abducted at any moment, lol! Fascinating stuff, especially when you realize intelligence agencies have already declassified tons of documents, admitted they don't know what the UFOs are and would like to know themselves and have launched their own investigations. Then you have the military releasing their own crazy footage and admitting they have no idea how the propulsion system would work, how they achieve their speeds or how they're able to maneuver the way they do. Oh, and they commit acts of war by jamming our radar. Amazon Prime seems to have way more 4k content than Netflix, even though I'm paying like $20/month for Netflix to get 4k. I can't wait for the next season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to come out. They're JUST NOW filming it. Damn you, Covid!

Unfortunately there are some odd technical issues with the uploads i.e. inconsistent sound and video quality, but that's an Amazon issue, not show quality. Prime also has my two favorite movies - the Burbs and Graveyard Tales. I could watch those over and over and over, and have. And god knows I've been babbling about the Expanse repeatedly in earlier posts. As to your Disney+ question, I would say Wandavision alone is worth the $7, or $14 since there are 4, possibly 5 more episodes (in which you'd buy a second month). It might be more fun watching the whole series in one sitting, so if you can avoid spoilers and are averse to pirated uploads, I say wait a few weeks, then spend the money. That said, the end of Episode 5 was so EPIC and significant to the entire Marvel universe, I'm wondering if you can truly avoid spoilers.
February 7, 20214 yr my spouse is watching ted lasso with jason sudekis. its a comedy and he’s like a super optimistic coach. shes liking it.
February 7, 20214 yr I can't believe I finally watched Tiger King. That was about the trashiest thing I've ever seen. I wanted to see what all the memes and opinions were about. I don't know why anyone would take sides; it just shows the power of video editing and how easily you can paint certain people as villains. Almost everyone in the show is full of it and guilty of some sort of messed up conspiracy. I can't believe I watched 7 episodes of people not just willing to make a fool of themselves, but INCRIMINATING themselves WHILE snitching on others... on a reality show. I would have thought that the entire show was fake if 'Joe Exotic' didn't go to prison. Conspiracy to murder aside, I have no sympathy for anyone who is guilty of animal cruelty, especially killing an endangered species.
February 8, 20214 yr I'm fascinated. You can get rich and even get your own Martin Scorcese documentary by being a professional complainer! Sign. Me. Up. I never understood long-time New Yorkers who complain about NYC all day every day but never leave. It's like.. "um.. you know that's something in your control, right?" They hate Donald Trump and everything he stands for, yet they can't stand tourists and transplants coming into their own city, which is nothing but Xenophobia on a metropolitan level. She does have some interesting opinions, though. She's certainly witty.
February 13, 20214 yr Damnit, Wandavision episode 6 went by QUICKLY. I'm going to be heartbroken when the show ends. Also, Red Letter Media recommended Kid Detective. It was excellent with some very shocking moments in the end. Quick warning to Wandavison fans. Be careful looking up stuff on Youtube. The episode 9 spoiler has been leaked... and it's ... it's ... it's something else. Edited February 16, 20214 yr by TBideon
February 27, 20214 yr Yep, I didn't blink once during Wandavision episode 8. Definitely a slower pace, exposition-heavy episode, but no complaints.

March 5, 20214 yr As close to a perfect show as I've seen. The Wandavision season/series finale was just wonderful.
April 16, 20214 yr my snapple fact of the day was the first vcr was invented in 1956 and was as big as a piano ... and sure enough:
April 30, 20214 yr netflix is trying to fight scrolling fatigue: https://nofilmschool.com/netflix-decision-fatigue
April 30, 20214 yr That's probably why I always liked independent video rental stores better than Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. You ended up just having to make a decision and the chances of you finding something good were still the same at the independent store as the huge ones. One of my favorite ones in the '90s was next to the old, old McDonalds in Reynoldsburg on Main St. It's stuff was a lot older on average and man was it sweet. Another legendary one (apparently, I never went) was called Ozoner Video on Northwest Blvd. Years later I opened my first store in that same space.
May 3, 20214 yr does anybody have the criterion collection movies service? i was thinking about getting it this summer and was wondering how well it works.
May 3, 20214 yr I don't. I have been tempted to get it, but for now I'm good with what they have on HBO Max. Although, why the F*&% do they not have a Criterion Collection portal on the app? They have ones for Adult Swim, TBS, et cetera.
May 3, 20214 yr Finally caught up with three movies that have been on my watch list forever: Grand Illusion, The Rules of the Game, and Don't Look Now. One of those is not like the others lol.
May 5, 20214 yr haha yeah. i love those. as for the on enot like the others we have had a dvd of doubt look now forever. its one of the most lookable and fashionable oriented movies for sure. be sure to go further down the nick roeg highway and check out the man who fell to earth with bowie, performance w/ jagger and walkabout. walkabout is a favorite.
May 5, 20214 yr I've seen The Man Who Fell to Earth, but I need to revisit it. Definitely want to see Walkabout, but first I have the Cassavetes box set, Rififi, and Wages of Fear to watch first.
May 5, 20214 yr ^ haha my spouse loves cassavetes. she a gena rowland fan. riffifi is great, but oh man wages is one of my favorites. be sure to check out the 70's remake called sorcerer by exorcist driector william friedkin afterward. its great too.
May 5, 20214 yr I may eventually watch Sorcerer, but I'm not a big Friedkin guy. French Connection is great, but i think The Exorcist is one of the most overrated movies of all time. Bug is a better film IMO, lol.
May 5, 20214 yr Narcos and Narcos: Mexico are pretty damn good. Looking forward to season 3. I'm Sorry -- just didn't work for me. And I just re-watched Annihilation. Mein gott that's a quality film.
May 5, 20214 yr I just finished Deutschland 83 on Hulu. It was a pretty good show About to watch Deutschland 86.
