February 3, 201213 yr Mahoning Valley’s growth in jobs outpaces state’s Published: Fri, February 3, 2012 @ 12:10 a.m. By Karl Henkel [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN For the first time in more than a decade, employment in the Mahoning Valley is not only growing but increasing faster than the rest of Ohio. The 2.5 percent increase in jobs last year — behind only the metropolitan areas of Sandusky, Steubenville and Lima — marked the first time since 1999 that the area had any annual job growth. February 23, 201213 yr The great news that is taking place in the Valley continues to get better. Sales tax revenues for Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana County are up significantly over the past few years and the growth in the sales tax revenue, coupled with employment growth in the Valley, means the Mahoning Valley of all places is the "fastest growing area in Ohio" says George Zeller, a Cleveland based economist. Great news for the community: http://www.vindy.com/news/2012/feb/22/mahoning-valley-sales-tax-revenue-surged-2011/ GM bonuses + Growth in Youngstown Business Incubator + Infant stages of Utica Shale Development = PROMISING future for Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley! February 27, 201213 yr I think this belongs here: Rust Belt brewery owners look to grow Published: Mon, February 27, 2012 @ 12:01 a.m. By Karl Henkel [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN The popularity of Rust Belt Brewing Co. has grown so much since the brewery’s debut in late 2008 that its owners say it is time to expand. Ken Blair, Daniel McCarthy and Nick Rosich, founders and owners of the Youngstown-based microbrewery, have launched a campaign to raise $30,000 to outsource some of its production to a contract brewer, revamp its human-intensive bottling process and expand into new markets. February 27, 201213 yr 500 jobs is more than what V&M Steel is adding at its mill expansion. This is a major setback for the Valley's economy. And these are good-paying jobs.... UNION LEADER: USPS IGNORED INPUT, OUTCRY By Karl Henkel [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN The U.S. Postal Service’sdecision to close the Youngstown processing and distribution facility is “reckless” and shows the post office has “no interest in what the public has to say,” a union representative says. Dominic Corso, president of the American Postal Workers’ Union Local 443, says Youngstown’s need for its 500-employee plant is greater than that of other plants in Northeast Ohio — and he says he has the numbers to prove it. Corso provided The Vindicator with postal-service summaries from three regional public-input meetings last November and December. The postal service received seven letters on its Area Mail Processing studies at similar facilities in Akron and Canton. In Youngstown, it received 8,419. Shale boom gives rise to 1,400-plus new jobs in Valley Published: Thu, March 8, 2012 @ 12:01 a.m. By Karl Henkel [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN The contested debate regarding Ohio jobs related to Utica and Marcellus shale exploration continues to be off the charts, with estimates as low as 20,000, as high as 200,000 and everywhere in between. To date, local or locally based businesses have created or soon will create more than 1,400 jobs related to natural gas and oil exploration. Nearly one-third of those jobs have or will be created by Vallourec, the French-based owners of V&M Star and VAM LLC. Others, such as Houston-based Exterran Energy Solutions, Russia-based TMK and Girard-based Valley Electrical Consolidated already have topped or have announced they will exceed 100 area jobs. March 9, 201213 yr Youngstown area leads US metros in export growth Published: Thu, March 8, 2012 @ 12:10 a.m. By Karl Henkel [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN The Mahoning Valley recently has experienced steady growth in employment, sales-tax revenue and new investments. Though it still lags behind many other metropolitan areas across the nation, the Valley can hang its work hat on one statistic: No other metro area posted stronger export growth than Youngstown from 2009 to 2010. The area’s export growth rate grew by 30 percent during that time, according to a report released Thursday by Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program. March 11, 201213 yr BTW, when I drove into Youngstown at 11 a.m. yesterday (Thursday), I was astonished at the traffic on I-680. I have noticed the same thing since moving back from Florida, the traffic. 224 tonight (Saturday) was backed up for miles, and parking lots are always full it seems, more so than past years. March 12, 201213 yr Commercial realtor Terry Coyne is releasing these personal assessments of Northeast Ohio's sub-markets for industrial and office market conditions. Here is his analysis of the Youngstown submarket....... TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 2012 CoyneReport - The Youngstown Real Estate Market Youngstown, Ohio is a city that has seen its share of challenges, but it is a city that has been undervalued for some time. As we continue our look at the various sub markets of Northeast Ohio, we turn our attention further east to Youngstown. For the purposes of this survey, we used the Warren-Youngstown-Boardman area. What challenges does Youngstown face? What opportunities could bring about growth? As is the case with most other cities in the region, the industrial market is large: over 43 million square feet. The Youngstown region has a high vacancy rate of approximately 17.5%. This rate has been the norm since early 2009, when the vacancy rate jumped as a result of the recession. The lack of a noticeable recovery (at least in vacancy rates) can be partially attributed to the type and age of buildings in the area. Youngstown has a much higher percentage of manufacturing and warehouse buildings than modern distribution facilities. Although manufacturing has strengthened across the country, the age of many of these buildings makes them impractical for modern use. Only approximately 0.5% of industrial buildings are classified as “class A”. March 30, 201213 yr More good news! See article below. So I was in Youngstown again today for a meeting charting the expansion of rail infrastructure to meeting growing traffic demand. The pace of development that's still to come is mind-boggling. And while there I checked on another major rail infrastructure project already underway -- Brier Hill Yard tracks along G&W RR's right of way, past the south end of the two-mile-long V&M plant (see photo below). I was there with a state official and a retired railroad executive, right during a shift change at the V&M plant. We were smiling, watching steelworkers pour out of the plant with their hardhats and lunch buckets. It was a beautiful sight. Adding to the chaotic scene were construction trucks, aggregate trucks, front-end loaders and trains. The state official was astonished to see so much activity in a town he was told for years was dead. Not dead -- sleeping. And it is reawakening........ This the same area 10 years ago -- with fewer cars in the mill's employee parking lots, fewer trains on the tracks and, hey, fewer tracks! Region's Recovery Ranks Among Strongest in U.S. Thursday, March 29, 2012 YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The economy of the Youngstown metropolitan area is recovering from the Great Recession with more strength than most in the United States, finds a new report from The Brookings Institution. The MetroMonitor of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program, a quarterly review that measures economic recovery and growth in 100 metropolitan regions, reported Tuesday that as of Dec. 31, the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area, or MSA, ranks among the top 20 that experienced the strongest rebounds since the recession officially ended in 2009. The report combines data on the number of jobs created during from the third quarter of 2009 through Dec. 31, 2011, the two-year percentage point change in unemployment for the period ending Dec. 31, changes in the gross metropolitan product since the economic trough in the second quarter of 2009, and the change in housing prices from the second quarter of 2011. May 8, 201213 yr Cross-posted from the fracking thread.... Weatherford Eyes Fall Start, 150 Jobs in Youngstown Tuesday, May 08, 2012 By George Nelson YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Weatherford International Ltd. tentatively plans to begin operations at its new Youngstown site in late September and hire about 150 employees, the company said Monday. The Swiss-based multinational oilfield services and technology company, plans to locate a “multiphase operations facility offering a wide variety of products and services that span the lifecycle of a well – drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention,” according to a fact sheet issued by the company. Weatherford is in the process of finalizing specifically what activities will take place at the site and what skills will be required, said Melanie Kania, communications specialist. “What we need to do is finalize what product lines we are going to have at that facility,” and once that is determined, the company will have a better idea of what positions will need to be filled and what skills they will be looking for in applicants, she explained. May 14, 201213 yr It continues........ Metro Area Ranks 3rd in Manufacturing Job Growth Thursday, May 10, 2012 YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Manufacturing employment rose nearly 11.7% between the first quarter of 2010 and the fourth quarter of 2011 in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA metropolitan statistical area, finds a new report released by the Brookings Institution. That increase placed the metro area third among the top 100 metropolitan areas in terms of change in manufacturing jobs during the period and was above the national average gain of 2.7%, according to the report, “Locating American Manufacturing: Trends in the Geography of Production.” Issued by Brookings’ Metropolitan Policy Program, the report, which looked at all U.S. metropolitan areas, finds the Midwest has seen the biggest gains in manufacturing jobs in the last two years and that the long-term shift of manufacturing jobs to the South has stopped. Additionally, it shows that manufacturing has shed its iron-age image and become more diversified, advanced and competitive. It also is a major source of innovation and good-paying jobs and drives economic growth. May 27, 201213 yr Looks like RG Steel bit off more than it could financially chew when it acquired several steel mills, the most profitable of which was the Warren Works. The Warren Works is still a fundamentally sound mill, and this is happening in a booming steel market, so I don't expect the Warren mill will stay idle for long....... RG Steel closure to idle 1,000 Published: Fri, May 25, 2012 @ 12:09 a.m. By Jordan Cohen [email protected] WARREN RG Steel LLC will shut down its Warren plant, idling more than 1,000 employees during a two-week period beginning June 4, a condition a spokeswoman said is believed to be “long term, but not permanent.” The company also is shutting down similar plants in Wheeling, W.Va., and Sparrows Point, Md. According to a notice issued by the company to the United Steelworkers, RG is facing “an immediate, unexpected liquidity crisis” and is still trying to work out an agreement with creditors to secure funds to cover the costs of continuing operations. RG Steel’s notification was issued under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), which requires companies to give a minimum of 60 days’ notice prior to shutdown. The Warren workers are getting significantly less notice than that. June 4, 201213 yr Court approves RG Steel’s financing plan June 2, 2012 Staff, wire reports , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com RG Steel LLC won preliminary approval of a bankruptcy financing plan on Friday as the troubled steelmaker works to find a buyer in the next two months for production facilities in three states, including its 1,200-worker Warren mill. A bankruptcy judge in Wilmington, Del., also granted the company's motions to continue paying employees and vendors whose goods and services are critical to ongoing operations. Shaunna Jones, an attorney for RG Steel, told Judge Kevin Carey that rumors that the company was going out of business and won't make steel after next week are not true. June 18, 201212 yr Big Sunday column in today's Youngstown Vindicator... The city’s downtown will see several changes in the coming months as it continues to attract new businesses to an area that largely was deserted for years. Work should be done in a month at Erie Terminal Place, a 65-bed apartment complex at 112 W. Commerce St., said Dominic Marchionda, the building’s owner. Next on his list is to start work before the end of the year on developing the vacant Wick Building at 34 W. Federal St. into an apartment building. Also, the Lemon Grove, a downtown bar and restaurant, is relocating two doors east of its current location to the larger 122 W. August 6, 201212 yr Residents in the Mahoning Valley are holdings their collective breath. Tomorrow they will learn the fate of 1,000 jobs..... New Life or the Scrap Bin for RG Steel Plants? Monday, August 06, 2012 YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO -- Will there be new operators for RG Steel’s mills in Warren and Sparrows Point, Md., or will the massive industrial structures be sold for scrap like RG’s Mingo Junction plant apparently will be? That question should be answered sometime Tuesday, if the Warren and Sparrows Point asset auctions proceed as scheduled by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Carey. The auctions are set for 10 a.m. tomorrow in the New York offices of RG Steel’s co-counsel, Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP. A hearing will be held Aug. 15 to confirm or reject the results of the auctions. Objections must be submitted by the close of business Aug. 8 to U.S. Bankruptcy County for the District of Delaware. Last week’s deadline for a “stalking horse” passed without a base-setting bidder emerging. Judge Carey gave RG Steel more time to solicit such bids but as of this posting, if any were received, none have been made public. Some 1,000 steelworkers are furloughed at RG’s Warren plant; 1,600 at its Sparrows Point plant. RG entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization May 31. August 8, 201212 yr There's still hope for the Warren mill...... UPDATE 1-Historic Sparrows Point steel mill sold to liquidator Wed Aug 8, 2012 12:52pm EDT By Tom Hals WILMINGTON, Del., Aug 8 (Reuters) - The historic Sparrows Point steel mill was sold to liquidator Hilco Industrial for about $72 million on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the result of a bankruptcy auction. The 120-year-old Baltimore mill, where steel for the Golden Gate Bridge was forged, was one of three steelmaking assets put up for sale by RG Steel LLC. The company was the fourth-largest U.S. producer of flat-rolled steel when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 31. RG Steel's mill in Warren, Ohio, was purchased by C.J. Betters Enterprises, which redevelops industrial sites, according to Chuck Betters, the head of the company. Betters said his intention is to find an operator of the mill after he evaluates the plant's cost base and needed upgrades. He said his company bid $17 million. September 9, 201212 yr Betters offers some hope for reopening September 7, 2012 By BRENDA J. LINERT - Staff reporter ([email protected]) , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com WARREN - Outside the corporate offices of RG Steel Thursday afternoon, more than 100 laid-off steelworkers broke into rousing applause when the soon-to-be owner told them he planned to winterize the plant. That signaled hope to the workers, who are well aware that without that costly process to protect the mill's infrastructure during the cold months, the plant likely would be damaged beyond repair. Charles J. Betters of Aliquippa, Pa., was in town Thursday to meet over lunch with local officials, then with media inside the corporate offices. He stepped outside in an impromptu meeting to address the crowd of laid-off workers who had gathered, some carrying signs urging the new owner to "run us" and not shut down the plant. October 3, 201212 yr Great news about the Sherman site. If this project happens, it's going to put pressure on modernizing the ex-RG Steel plant in Warren. And rail links between them will need to be improved. Campbell Gets $1.88M to Remediate Sherman Site Wednesday, October 03, 2012 By George Nelson CAMPBELL, Ohio – A $1.88 million Clean Ohio grant will move a proposed cold-rolled steel mill on the former Youngstown Sheet & Tube property closer to reality, proponents say. State Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D-33 Boardman, joined Mayor William VanSuch and representatives of Brownfield Restoration Group of Akron, Sherman International Corp. and Sherman Metal Technologies LLC for a press event Tuesday to announce the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund grant, which will be used to remediate the property. Using funds provided earlier by Clean Ohio, Brownfield Restoration conducted sampling and analysis of the soil and groundwater to determine the nature of contamination on the site and how to clean it up, said Jim Smith, president. “This grant is a cleanup grant which will actually restore the site to a level so it can be reused and redeveloped for industrial and commercial purposes,” he said. October 8, 201212 yr Revenue from sales taxes continues upward spiral in Mahoning Valley Published: Sun, October 7, 2012 @ 11:51 a.m. By JAMISON COCKLIN [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN Sales-tax figures from the Ohio Department of Taxation show continuing gains across the Mahoning Valley, with modest upward collection rates in June and July, demonstrating consumers seem inclined to spend more this year than last. The most recent data, which runs through July, is delayed because of the 60-day turnaround required for merchants to report the figures and the time it takes for the Department of Taxation to process the funds and dole them out to both the state and its 88 counties. “Generally, it’s safe to say that when sales-tax receipts are up — the economy is up — there’s definitely a correlation there,” said Gary Gudmundson, chief spokesman for the ODT. March 2, 201411 yr Obama Gets Two More of His Networked “Teaching Factories,” Has 41 to Go Chicago, Detroit | 02/25/2014 6:59am | 0 NANCY SCOLA | NEXT CITY President Obama has managed to hide away, in plain sight, one the more inventive things an American president has pulled off in recent memory. Take this tidbit from his 2013 State of the Union address: "A once-shuttered warehouse is now a state-of-the art lab where new workers are mastering the 3D printing." And from this year’s: "My administration has launched two hubs for high-tech manufacturing in Raleigh and Youngstown." Obama will talk about these spaces again today when he officially announces the awarding of two more such factories, one in Detroit and one in Chicago, with $70 million in Defense Department spending behind each. (The White House did us the favor of previewing the decisions early.)... Indeed, each “networked” manufacturing hub has a specific focus. The first, in Youngstown, Ohio, launched in August 2012 as the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute with a special focus on 3D printing. The second, in Raleigh, N.C., is called the Next Generation Power Electronics Innovation Institute. Chicago’s focus will be on "Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation," which, according to the White House, is this: READ MORE AT: http://nextcity.org/sharedcity/entry/obama-gets-two-more-of-his-networked-teaching-factories-41-to-go "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

November 6, 201410 yr This will be a heavy blow to the neighborhoods in which these stores are located, if they aren't replaced by another grocer. Delhaize Group to Sell 66 Bottom Dollar Food Store Locations Nov 5, 2014 SALISBURY, N.C. – Delhaize Group, the parent company of Bottom Dollar Food, announced today that it has entered into a transaction to sell Bottom Dollar Food's 66 store locations and associated lease liabilities to ALDI Inc. As a result of the transaction, Delhaize Group will no longer operate in the discount segment of food retail in the United States. Today's announcement is consistent with Delhaize Group's previously stated strategy of focusing on its core operations in the traditional supermarket segment. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2015. At this time, Bottom Dollar Food anticipates all stores will remain open until year-end. After that time, Bottom Dollar Food will close the stores and retire the banner’s operations. Upon the closing of stores, Bottom Dollar Food will offer every associate severance, and eligible associates will be offered career transition services. “This decision was difficult given the impact on our associates, customers and communities in which we operate,” said Gene Faller, vice president of retail operations for Bottom Dollar Food. “We want to thank our associates, customers and communities for their support over the past four years.” Bottom Dollar Food opened its first store in King of Prussia, Pa., on Oct. 8, 2010, and currently has 46 stores in greater Philadelphia, Pa., and 20 stores in greater Pittsburgh, Pa. The banner currently employs about 2,200 associates. For more information, visit www.bottomdollarfood.com/newsroom. ###
July 10, 20159 yr I'll bet the 80 laid-off steel mill workers earned a total income that will equal the total income of the 400 call center workers.... Vallourec Star to lay off up to 80 workers at Youngstown steel mill July 09, 2015 UPDATED 7 HOURS AG By DAN SHINGLER The troubles continue for Youngstown’s 3-year-old, $1 billion steel mill, as French company Vallourec Star announced another round of layoffs due to low demand for its pipe from the oil and gas industry. The company announced Thursday, July 9, that it “is taking further steps to streamline operations” at the plant, which “will result in a workforce reduction of approximately 60 (to) 80 jobs, effective early August 2015.” The plant employs a little more than 500 people. It’s not the first time the plant has cut back on workers hours or jobs since low oil and gas prices brought a slowdown in drilling. The company makes steel tubing that is primarily used by shale drillers around the United States.
