BTW, the reason why those bids came in much higher was because the amount of earthmoving is much more extensive than first thought.

Niles Expanded Metals Ready to Expand

June 22, 2010 6:57 a.m.

By George Nelson

NILES, Ohio -- Niles Expanded Metals has been planning for growth for the past few years, and executives say they hope to be able to move forward soon -- perhaps in a month -- on an expansion.

William E. Phillips, chairman and CEO, and Bill Phillips Jr., president and chief operating officer, were reluctant to provide details Monday about new products or markets, as the company is still in the process of finalizing the paperwork and contracts, although the necessary equipment has already been purchased.

"I can't really go into detail about it but we are looking at a relatively large expansion that will bring some higher tech jobs here and some higher paying jobs here," Bill Phillips Jr. said.

A Pittsburgh-based company that owns 113 acres of industrial property in Campbell and Youngstown is planning to build a steel mill there.

...

Sherman International Corp. would like to build a mill for cold-rolling coils on the 40 acres it owns in Campbell, said company representatives.

...

The plan hinges on the city’s obtaining grants for the company to assess and then clean up the site.

...

If all goes as planned, Krinos said, the company would like to expand the mill onto its Youngstown property eventually, with the expectation of 3,500 jobs in all.

HOLY sh!t!!!

LOL!  I'm waiting for the Business Journal's take on this.  Vindy and Business Journal often seem to report things differently.  And, the Business Journal has more credibility with me.

Me too. I am a little nervous that Sherman International doesn't seem to have any experience in making steel. I see that they do have experience in manufacturing machinery that's used in the making of steel. And since this is supposed to be a cold-rolling mill, perhaps that's not such a huge leap for them.

I am curious about where they will get their steel from. Do existing furnaces (electric arc or last) in the region have the capacity to supply this company? What are their transportation needs? And is this plant related to the Marcellus gas field in any way?

This definitely sounds like a long-term project.

Here's the Business Journal's take on the project. Somewhat more muted than the Vindicator's coverage....

Company Seeks State Funds to Study Environment Cleanup at Campbell Site

June 23, 2010 6:42 a.m.

By Dan O'Brien

CAMPBELL, Ohio -- A company that owns more than 100 acres of former industrial land along the Mahoning River wants to use a state program to clean a section of that site and prepare it for future development.

That development, said Krishna Sharma, chairwoman of Sherman International Corp. of Pittsburgh, could potentially lead to the construction of a new steel mill that in the future could mean thousands of manufacturing and support jobs in the Mahoning Valley.

"We did a study and some research and thought that it could be possible," Sharma said. "It's a beautiful piece of property."

Facility taking shape

By MARLY KOSINSKI Tribune Chronicle

POSTED: June 25, 2010

WARREN - Mark Marvin has made good on his promise to bring jobs to the city where he grew up, with several people already hired for his company, Reinforcement Systems of Ohio, LLC.

Marvin said he has filled three office positions and plans to hire eight people in the next three or four weeks to move equipment into the new facility on West Market Street just west of Martin Luther King Boulevard S.W. He said those hires will be permanent, and after the equipment is installed, he will use the new hires in positions to fit their skills, such as maintenance or material handlers.

The building, located on 17 acres of vacant land, is nearly complete, and Marvin said he will start bringing equipment in once the structure is secure. He said he plans to start production Sept. 1 as long as Ohio Edison has his electricity connected in time to start trial runs in mid-August.

VXI Expansion Talks in 'Final Stages'

June 25, 2010 6:42 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Negotiations are in the "very final stages" on a proposed expansion by VXI Global Solutions inc. of its call center at 20 Federal Place, a spokesman said Thursday.

Los Angeles-based VXI, which last year opened a call center in the city-owned 20 Federal Place building that now employs some 500 workers, is considering expanding its local operations and potentially doubling its employment.

On Thursday, the city Board of Control approved a second increase to its contract with Ricottilli Construction Co., Poland, for demolition work on the fifth floor of the building. Originally awarding a contract for $21,000, the city adjusted the contact to $72,000 in May to cover additional demolition work requested by VXI and yesterday increased it by $47,866 to $119,866.

Valley leaders forging unity on proposed mill

With everything from cautious optimism to a hope for the return of the good old days, area leaders are weighing in on a plan for a new steel mill.

Sherman International Corp., based in Pittsburgh, said earlier this week it intends to build a mill for cold-rolling coils on 40 acres of former Youngs-town Sheet and Tube land it owns in Campbell along the Mahoning River. That mill would employ 700 people, said Krishna Sharma, owner of Sherman International.

The plan depends on whether the company can get state Clean Ohio funds to assess the property for cleanup and the cleanup itself. On the company’s behalf, the city is applying for $300,000 for the assessment. It would then apply for $3 million for the cleanup of whatever chemicals and metals are found in the soil.

The national media spotlight will shine on Youngstown once again when BBC World News America airs a special report on the city’s emerging high-tech industry Friday.

The segment is the last spot in “Rust Belt Revival,” a series that looks at how three so-called Rust Belt cities — Youngstown, Kokomo, Ind., and Rockford, Ill. — are using innovative ideas and investments to try to reverse years of economic misfortune.

...

“Rust Belt Revival” will air Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 7 p.m. on BBC America and BBC World News. Portions of the shows also will be available online at BBC America.

I just moved a bunch of articles and other posts about V&M Star's expansion from this thread to:

http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,23808.0.html

It's now a bonafide development project (actually it's been one since V&M announced it last winter). But I guess it really didn't hit me that it's really happening until the groundbreaking ceremony was held today.

A great day, one that I thought I would never see again in Youngstown. Brings a happy tear to my eye.

More Home Sales Reflect More Confidence, Processing Time for Tax-Credit Paperwork

July 1, 2010 6:42 a.m.

By George Nelson

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Federal tax credits to encourage home buyers that ended in April continued to fuel Mahoning Valley home sales in May as paperwork was processed, particularly in Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

Home sales in Mahoning County last month were up by more than a third from April, and were up by nearly as much from a year ago, reports the Youngstown-Columbiana Association of Realtors.

..."That is very encouraging. That tells me one thing -- that consumer confidence is growing locally," Klacik remarked.

That confidence is being boosted by developments such as V&M Star's recent groundbreaking on its new $650 million mill, the impending launch of the Chevrolet Cobalt at General Motors' Lordstown plant and a potential resolution of the Forum Health bankruptcy, Klacik observed.

Valley Added 1,251 Jobs Through Efforts

July 14, 2010 7:07 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Eleven economic development organizations in the Mahoning Valley played a role in creating or keeping 2,700 jobs in Mahoning and Trumbull counties in 2009 and the related investments that came to nearly $100 million, the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber reported Tuesday.

In its fourth annual economic development report for the Valley, the chamber said, the 11 agencies “were involved in 77 projects that resulted in investments totaling $99.53 million, produced 1,251 new jobs and retained/maintained 1,454 jobs.”

This compares to 59 projects in 2008 where $446.3 million was invested and led to 2,338 new jobs while keeping 4,195. In 2007, the chamber said, the 11 agencies were involved in 105 projects where $87.74 million was invested and led to 1,275 new jobs while keeping 1,877. 2008 figures showed 149 projects with $192.6 million, 1,721 new jobs and 4,717 retained.

The company announced in June its plans to build a cold-rolling mill on 40 acres of industrial property it owns in Campbell. The company claims to have a four-phase plan to expand the mill on 70 acres of adjacent property in Youngstown.

VXI Communicated Intention to Expand

Youngstown Call Center Early, Officials Say

July 20, 2010 7:27 a.m.

By George Nelson

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The ink had barely dried on the city's first development agreement last year with VXI Global Solutions Inc. when city and company officials began discussing the possibility of entering into another agreement to expand its new inbound call center here, Mayor Jay Williams said.

Those discussions came to fruition Tuesday, when the Los Angeles-based teleservices company confirmed that it would take over the fifth floor of 20 Federal Place, doubling the size of the call center it opened there last October and adding 600 employees there over the next year, bringing total employment to over 1,200. According to the company, 100 to 200 of those new hires are expected to take place in the next 60 days.

"Few, if any, other similarly situated cities in the entire country have attracted the level of investment and economic fertility as has been seen in Youngstown over the course of the last year," Williams said, reflecting on the spate of positive economic announcements in the city recently. "Youngstown, Ohio is clearly living up to its billing as one of the best places in America to do business.

Valley Unemployment Rises in June

July 21, 2010 7:07 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of jobless in the Mahoning Valley increased in June versus the previous month, but the unemployment rate is still well below percentages posted a year ago.

...Mahoning County's unemployment rate nudged upward from 11.4% in May to 11.5% in June, while Trumbull County's unemployment rate increased from 11.9% in May to 12.6% in June. Columbiana County's unemployment rate stood at 12.6% for the month, an increase from 12.3% in May.

Still, the three counties continue to fare better than a year ago. In June 2009, Mahoning reported an unemployment rate of 13.1%, Trumbull said its jobless rate was 14.5%, and Columbiana reported its unemployment rate stood at 14.1%.

Some dispute claims of widespread job growth in Valley

‘Much more is said than done,’ McKelvey says

YOUNGSTOWN

Have you ever read local agency reports that celebrate “creating 2,000 jobs in the Valley last year?”

And then, like many of us, wonder: Where were 2,000 jobs created?

About $1 million is spent annually on Mahoning Valley economic and job development. But views differ on whether these efforts are enhancing economic recovery.

Some authorities say Youngstown is on the brink of an economic breakthrough, evidenced by a third shift at Lordstown’s GM plant, the investments in downtown jobs at VXI’s call center and business development at the Youngstown Business Incubator.

Others say the local economy is no better now than the day the mills closed, that the Valley has remained economically stagnant for 33 years.

These folks aren't paying attention. Many jobs have already been created. This discussion thread summarizes them. Many more are coming because they were announced in 2010 but won't happen for a couple of months or a couple of years (V&M, Exal, Niles Exanded Metals).

Report: Renco Group eyes Severstal’s mill in Warren

A former owner of the Severstal Warren steel mill has surfaced as a potential bidder for a group of steel mills reportedly being marketed by Severstal North America Inc.

No one from Renco or Aurora returned phone calls Friday seeking comment. Severstal spokeswoman Marika Diamond said the company doesn't comment on market rumors.

CAMPBELL

The state has granted the city nearly $300,000 to do an environmental assessment of Sherman International’s Wilson Avenue property, the site of the company’s proposed steel-mill project.

The Ohio Controlling Board awarded the city $299,818 in Clean Ohio funding Monday. The funds will be used to evaluate the extent of environmental contamination on the 40-acre property, formerly part of Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.’s Campbell Works.

Whether Sherman International develops this site or someone else, it has to be cleaned first. So I welcome this, even if I don't yet know if I should trust Sherman to build what they say. I hope I'm wrong.

Rosetta Stone Serves Final Orders

Aug. 26, 2010 7:02 a.m.

By Jeremy Lydic

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A quick visit to the Rosetta Stone Café last evening revealed mostly empty tables with maybe a dozen patrons enjoying a final meal at the restaurant.

Although owner Chuck Sop did not make himself available to The Business Journal, the few staff on hand passed along his message of "no comment," to a reporter.

Sop has been quoted as blaming the poor economy as one reason for his restaurant's closing. But the restaurant failed to develop a large, steady clientele among the downtown work force, said some observers familiar with its operations, who cited inconsistent service and quality.

^I've heard too many claims of bad service to believe that this closing can be completely blamed on the economy.  Every time I've eaten there, the food was good, but the service was never great. (though, I've never had "bad" service)

I'm looking forward to the business that moves into this location.  I'll be surprised if someone doesn't move in soon.

I've eaten there only once. It was on a Saturday afternoon so the crowd wasn't very large. Desite that, it took a long time for our food to be served.

After we ate and left, I drove past Charlie Staples Bar-B-Q‎ which, as you know, is in a bad location being at the edge of a tough neighborhood. If the economy is blamed for Rosetta Stone's closing, then Charlie Staples should have been just as empty. But the parking was very full.

As long as Rosetta Stone's owner doesn't drag his feet, it won't be long before a new restaurant lands in that location, especially with another 500 jobs moving in next door.

There is a subtle note at the end of this article that TT could expand in downtown Youngstown. My suggestion is the Stambaugh Building on Central Square. :) Can't get much more visible than that!

New Owners See Growth Ahead for Turning

Aug. 31, 2010 7:14 a.m.

By Dan O'Brien

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A private equity firm based in Florida says that its acquisition of Turning Technologies LLC demonstrates the company has impressive growth potential and that its location downtown is an advantage, not a detriment, to more growth.

"It's not the most obvious place to find a technology company," said Lawrence Shagrin, partner in Brockway Moran & Partners Inc., Boca Raton, Fla. "But, as we looked at Turning, we saw that there are a number of people in northeast Ohio and the Pittsburgh area that don't have the opportunity to work for a growing technology company. The fact that Turning is there is a big advantage."

Brockway Moran, a firm that has $1.3 billion under management, acquired Turning from Talisman Capital Partners, a smaller equity firm in Columbus. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. Since 1998, Brockway Moran has completed more than 50 acquisitions.

This is the latest Hub of Innovation & Opportunity announced by the state, this time in Youngtown....

Advanced Materials, Software Hub Focuses Entrepreneurship on Valley's Strengths

Sept. 2, 2010 6:12 a.m.

By George Nelson

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The $250,000 state grant announced Wednesday to launch the Youngstown Entrepreneurial Hub of Advanced Materials Commercialization and Software Development is only the beginning, officials vowed Wednesday.

The newly designated hub, the sixth Ohio Hub of Innovation and Opportunity, will have priority when it seeks funds for related projects, said Lisa Patt-McDaniel, director of the Ohio Department of Development.

Patt-McDaniel was among the throng of government officials and business leaders, including Gov. Ted Strickland and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, who gathered at Youngstown State University's Tod Hall to commemorate the designation. Partners in the local hub include YSU, the cities of Youngstown and Warren, Youngstown Business Incubator, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, Kent State University's Trumbull Campus and the Raymond John Wean Foundation.

As electrification of the automobile takes the market by storm, engineers at Delphi Corp.’s development center here are at the forefront of the growing hybrid and electric-vehicle sector.

Less than a year after Delphi exited a prolonged Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the Champion Technical Center, world headquarters of the company’s electrical/electronic architecture division, has emerged as an international leader in electric-vehicle innovation and a critical component of the reorganized Delphi.

I used to work at this facility, pretty cool place. I got to see a lot of new technology, a Chinese Buick, etc. I used to do testing and validation on Delphi's components, AKA i ran electrical currents through terminal interfaces and connectors, took measurements, put them through heat, vibration, cold, salt fog, etc and then took measurements again. It was such a cool job.

Although the city’s economic performance remains one of the worst among the nation’s largest metropolitan areas, Youngstown has shown signs of economic recovery last quarter, posting the largest gain in manufacturing employment in the country.

Another item about the surge in manufacturing job growth....

Youngstown Leads the Nation

Posted by Chris Thompson - 09.20.2010

Lately I've been pointing out the success the Cleveland metro area is having at adding manufacturing jobs during the meager economic recovery. This month came some more encouraging news -- Youngstown is tops in the nation in manufacturing job growth.

According to a new report from the Brookings Institution, manufacturing job growth in the Youngstown metro leaped 8.9% in the second quarter of 2010, compared to the first quarter. Cleveland came in second out of the top 100 metros in the nation with 3% growth.  And Akron was up 1.5%, 12th in the nation. The next economy is going to be fueled by manufacturing -- not housing. And Northeast Ohio is well positioned to take advantage of that dramatic change.

Brookings notes that the economy recover isn't yet changing the overall employment outlook and that the Great Lakes in general has a long way to go before we recover what was lost in the Great Recession. Yet, it is good to see Youngstown and the rest of Northeast Ohio at the front of the pack. Let's hope it continues.

The Fund for Our Economic Future is working with Brookings to highlight our region's economic strategies as part of an effort to encourage more federal support for regional eocnomic competitiveness efforts like Advance Northeast Ohio. Look for more on this work this winter.

Others say the local economy is no better now than the day the mills closed, that the Valley has remained economically stagnant for 33 years.

http://www.vindy.com/news/2010/aug/08/some-dispute-claims-of-widespread-job-gr/

The Youngstown-Warren MSA has added 3900 jobs since the beginning of the year.

The MSA's unemployment rate has dropped like a rock from the beginning of the year too from 13.7% to 11.1%.

Old news, but I guess it's official now.

Vernon’s Cafe, a popular Niles eatery, will open a new restaurant on the ground floor next year as part of a major renovation of the Youngstown landmark.

In addition to the restaurant, the new Federal Building will feature residential apartments on the four upper floors.

Each floor will have two 900-square-foot, two-bedroom apartments and a 600-square-foot studio apartment, Gatta said. The two-bedroom units will rent for $900 per month, and the studios will go for $600 a month, he said.

Road to prosperity

Councilman urges more development on one of city’s main arteriesNovember 21, 2010 - By LARRY RINGLER / Tribune Chronicle

WARREN - For decades, it was known simply as The Strip.

The busiest section ran on U.S. Route 422 from the top of the hill at Ridge Road in Warren to the top of the hill in Niles - three-plus miles of fine restaurants, shopping and entertainment.

The Warren part stretched to North Road S.E., and offered white-tablecloth dining at restaurants like El Rio and The Living Room, along with car dealerships, department stores and professional offices.

"The Strip was the main artery of entertainment, shopping and restaurants between Warren, Niles and Girard," recalled Michael Keys, director of Warren Community Development. "It'd be great to increase that."

City council will consider legislation Wednesday that would help move forward a $1.4 million expansion project for Exal Corp.

Exal wants to build a 10,689-square-foot expansion to its current structure at the city’s Performance Place Business Park on Poland Avenue.

The company has about 300,000 square feet with about 400 employees at that location, said city Finance Director David Bozanich. This expansion would add 25 more workers.
