It’s been a good start to the week for the Mahoning Valley’s economy.

A day after the announcement of at least 40 new manufacturing jobs in Youngstown, Anderson-Dubose Inc. broke ground Tuesday on a new $30 million distribution center in Lordstown.

The project will bring 160 jobs and $8 million in additional annual income to the Valley.

De-Cal to Create 30+ Jobs with Expansion

Aug. 2, 2011 6:48 a.m.

By Maraline Kubik

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The number of manufacturing jobs in the Mahoning Valley is about to jump again.De-Cal Inc., a mechanical contracting firm announced Monday that it will hire 30 workers to start, and could eventually employ "hundreds" at its newest location in the Ohio Works Industrial Park on the west side.

Inside a revamped 20,200-square-foot building once occupied by Superior Chemical Co., company officials and officeholders cut a ribbon to mark the official opening of De-Cal's Youngstown office and manufacturing site.

De-Cal, based in Warren, Mich., had been looking since September for a site where it could expand its mechanical contracting and metal fabrication operations, reported operations manager Frank Gambino. The focus of the search had been in Pittsburgh, he continued, but after taking the lower labor rates in Youngstown into consideration, company principals rethought their options.

Rebuilding the river

Initiative bringing new life to former industrial sites

August 7, 2011

By LARRY RINGLER - Business Editor ([email protected]) , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

Much of the land lies weed-choked and silent, a far cry from the fire and roar when giant steel mills were spitting out steel to make skyscrapers, tanks and cars.

But mayors who belong to the Mahoning River Corridor Initiative from Newton Falls in western Trumbull County to Lowellville in eastern Mahoning County are focused on a goal: Clean and market abandoned manufacturing sites on 800-plus acres of "brownfields" to generate jobs and taxes or provide boating, bicycling and other recreational uses.

It's a long and tedious process - Warren's efforts to reclaim 6 1/2 acres of the former Mahoningside power plant took 10 years and $6.5 million of state and federal money - but leaders say it's a job that needs done.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Renovating the historic Federal Building downtown has meant a surprise every day, developer Dominic Gatta III remarks.

Even so, Gatta, a partner in the Gatta Co. and vice president of DSV Builders Inc., said V2 Wine Bar & Trattoria by Vernon's, at 110 W. Federal St., is a couple of weeks from opening, joining the central city's increasingly popular entertainment district.

Signs of new life

Despite a rise in unemployment, some businesses are ready to hire

August 28, 2011

By LARRY RINGLER - Business Editor ([email protected]) , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

Thomas Steel Strip Corp. has hired six this year at its Warren Township plant. The new workers aren't increasing the work force because they're replacing older workers who have retired, but it at least sends a signal the pressure to cut jobs is easing.

Starr Manufacturing Inc. in Vienna recently received a $75,800 state grant to train workers to make parts for equipment that turn grasses, waste products and other biomass into biofuel - part of the blossoming "green" energy movement.

Other area employers, including manufacturers like the RG Steel mill south of Warren, are in the market for workers.

It all adds up to signs of life, however tentative, in the long-suffering industrial sector that give hope despite the area's worst unemployment rate of the year in July.

General Motors sets overtime shift for Lordstown to meet growing Chevrolet Cruze demand

Published: Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 6:32 PM    Updated: Thursday, September 01, 2011, 9:13 AM

By Robert Schoenberger, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- About 4,500 GM autoworkers in Lordstown will be working some unexpected extra hours as General Motors struggles to keep the popular Chevrolet Cruze on dealer lots.

"That's the demand that's out there," said GM spokesman Tom Mock. "We're building them as fast as we can."

Working Saturday overtime shifts is common at some auto plants, but GM didn't expect to have to use the expensive option in Lordstown so soon. Veteran workers will get about $42 an hour in time-and-a-half wages. Newer workers will earn about $22 an hour on the overtime shifts.

Before the Cruze went into production, the company last year added a third shift to Lordstown, allowing it to effectively run 24 hours a day from Monday through Friday. All three of those shifts will report on Sept. 10 and Sept. 17.

So I'm driving down Federal Street in Downtown Youngstown today and I saw on my right a CONVENIENCE STORE! Yes, a DOWNTOWN convenience store!! A nice one, too! Not one of those places that specializes in selling lottery tickets, porno mags, and 40-oz beers. But a real, honest-to-goodness convenience store with groceries. Guess all those new apartment dwellers need someplace to shop!! :) So I did a Google search and realized this article was never posted........

Researcher: Youngstown area fastest growing in state

October 31, 2011

LARRY SHIELDS - Staff Writer ([email protected]) , Salem News

Cleveland economic researcher George Zeller said Sunday, "Youngstown's the fastest-growing area in the state."

While unemployment figures are still too high, Zeller said the Youngstown-Warren area "is a lot better and is heading in the right direction."

A 12-week streak of clear "job growth" in the area was "barely broken" due to job deterioration in Trumbull County, he said, but noted the region experienced "job growth" now for 13 of the last 14 weeks.

Adding to the above news article, rail advocates are organizing a campaign to promote rail infrastructure improvements in the Mahoning Valley.

We are calling this regional initiative RESTORE:

Rail Enhancements = Sustainable Transportation, Opportunity, Revitalization & Employment

RESTORE

A rail enhancement program for the Mahoning Valley

We are seeking expressions of support from interested stakeholders, but first encourage their principals to view a presentation available here:

http://freepdfhosting.com/3150e52473.pdf

+ What is RESTORE?

A proposed public-private program to restore rail infrastructure

which supports the revival of the Mahoning Valley’s industrial

economy to serve energy, manufacturing and supplier markets.

+ Why RESTORE?

Inspired by Chicago’s CREATE program to address its rail

traffic congestion, Mahoning Valley’s RESTORE seeks to

revive or reconnect rail system assets that were downgraded

over 35 years of deindustrialization.

+ Why RESTORE rail?

Rail is a low-cost, high-volume, energy-efficient means of

moving goods and people to promote economic efficiency,

industrial development and job creation.

Dear Mr. Prendergast,

Thank you for sharing with me your RESTORE presentation on the need for creating a

coordinated, programmatic rail infrastructure improvement effort for Northeast Ohio.

Such a program would increase the attractiveness of the Mahoning Valley as the leading

job-creating "tool box" for tapping the Marcellus/Utica shale.

We at ________________ are in agreement with All Aboard Ohio that such a rail

infrastructure improvement program is needed and that it be carried out as a public-

private partnership. A regional entity could host the program, coordinate planning and

funding, and organize the interest and expertise of various regional interests.

Please keep us apprised of your progress as you advocate for a regional rail infrastructure

improvement program. We are excited about its job-creating prospects and, should you

need other assistance from ________________ in the future, please do not hesitate to

contact me.

Sincerely,

TMK Plant Poised for Shale Drilling Boom

Nov. 21, 2011 6:57 a.m.

By Dan O'Brien

BROOKFIELD, Ohio -- The president and CEO of TMK IPSCO says its threading operation here is "pretty much" running around the clock and could add employees and capacity if demand continues to increase.

"We're very excited about the growth that we've seen here and the potential for growth in the future," said Vicki Avril.

When TMK IPSCO opened its pipe-threading operation here in May 2010, it started with a single thread line and about 20 employees, Avril said. Since then, the company has added another processing line and has today 72 employees at the site. "It's played out very well for us," she said.

More than half of those jobs, Avril noted, were filled with those who were either unemployed or underemployed.

Warren's Chase Building Sells for $75,000

WARREN, Ohio -- The operators of the Mocha House are now the owners of the landmark JPMorgan Chase Bank building downtown here following an auction of the property that saw the bidding for the nine-story building fall as low as $25,000.

The Mocha House was the successful bidder among the three registered bidders for the auction Thursday morning, conducted by Doug Walton of United Country Walton Realty & Auction Co, LLC, Upper Sandusky.

The Mocha House's bid of $75,000 secured the property, located on four parcels at East Market Street and South Park Avenue. The building was constructed in 1927 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Girard has hopes for good times

December 1, 2011

By DAN POMPILI - reporter ([email protected]) , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

GIRARD - Larry Maffitt remembers how his aunt's bar used to be in the 1970s when the steel industry was booming.

"They'd stand three deep around this bar every day," he said.

Kuzman's enjoyed a second heyday while aluminum manufacturer Indalex operated in Girard and employed more than 400 workers, Maffitt said.

"We'd see at least 300 of them daily," he said.

The past three years have been lean, though, since Indalex ceased operations in Girard and only exacerbated poor economic conditions in the fiscally emergent city.

Much of that changed over the past several months, though, as V&M Star opted to expand their Youngstown operation and jumpstarted the surrounding economy, Maffitt said.

The Warren Tribune Chronicle reports that a company called "Wheeling Tube" is looking to build a plant somewhere in the Mahoning Valley. But I find no company called Wheeling Tube. I did, however, find a company called Wheeling Machine Products, which was acquired by U.S. Steel Tubular Products in 1995. Wheeling Machine Products makes couplings related to oil country tubular goods (OCTG) casing at its facilities in Pine Bluff Ark., and Hughes Springs, Texas. It's Arkansas plant appears to measure about 100,000 to 150,000 square feet and is rail-served. The Texas plant is much smaller, maybe 20,000 square feet.

While looking for any more information, I came across this important development (and since found many new listings for job openings at this plant)....

U.S. Steel returning to McKeesport

By Patrick Cloonan, MCKEESPORT DAILY NEWS

Saturday, April 9, 2011

...Instead, Pittman said, "U.S. Steel is going to reinvest here in the Monongahela Valley and specifically here in McKeesport."

Camp-Hill is the last vestige of a complex that began with the National Tube Works in 1872. What became U.S. Steel's National Works operated until 1987.

The beginning of the end was a work stoppage from Aug. 1, 1986, until Feb. 2, 1987. U.S. Steel called it a strike; the USW called it a lockout.

Three days after the dispute ended, U.S. Steel announced the indefinite closing of four Pittsburgh area mills. On April 24, 1987, it announced the permanent closing of the National and Homestead District works.

.....What started out as the National Tube Works first was a provider of pipe for Western Pennsylvania's oil industry. By 1890 it was a self-contained plant.

Burgwin speculated that the rising Marcellus shale drilling industry is a factor in a new demand for pipe.

'Tough Year' for Builders, Optimism for 2012

Dec. 8, 2011 7:02 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- 2011 was a challenging year for the region's construction contractors and suppliers, and 2012 will be no different, even as some big construction projects continue to take shape, leaders of the Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania reported at last night's annual meeting of the trade group.

"We had a tough year this year," said Kevin Reilly, executive vice president of The Builders. "Manhours are still down from our historical average but we did see a little bit of an uptick in manhours -- we're up about 4% from the prior year but we're still down about 25% from our historical average."

Total building and non-building construction dollar volume was just shy of $381.6 million in 2011, a big drop from 2010's $670.3 million but not if the $345.3 million that V&M Star added into last year's total dollar volume is taken into account.

That's awesome! Congrats! I know your Dad must be proud of you too to see you in a blue-collar business, even if your collar is more white than blue!! ;)

KJP, any news on the Sherman plant?

There won't be much new for a while as the environmental assessment on the former Youngstown Sheet & Tube property is continuing. Sherman is also trying to round up some capital dollars for site infrastructure, namely an access road from Center Street and a bridge over Norfolk Southern's Youngstown Line. The documents below will provide information about the site and the Phase II Environmental Assessment funded by a $300,000 Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grant......

Chamber to Get $179K in JobsOhio Funds

Dec. 8, 2011 7:14 a.m.

By George Nelson

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Funding from the JobsOhio program will allow the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber to enhance its business expansion and retention operation, a function it has had since its formation in 1993, a chamber official says.

Greater Cleveland Partnership, Team Lorain County, Stark Development Board, Greater Akron Chamber and the Regional Chamber received preliminary approval for a $2 million grant from the board of trustees of Team Northeast Ohio, the JobsOhio network partner for this region of the state.

JobsOhio is the public-private entity overseeing the state of Ohio's development efforts. The money, which would be used for a regional retention and expansion program, represented the largest of six grants totaling $2.975 million given preliminary approval by Team NEO, the JobsOhio representative for an 18-county region in northeast Ohio.

Thanks! Yes, dad is proud, he keeps calling me a "steelworker, like my grand-dad and great-grand-dad", lol. My maternal grandfather worked at Thomas Steel in Warren. My grandmother also worked there as the paymaster (that's where she met him), but he made her quit after they got married. My paternal great-grandfather worked at Republic Steel in Warren back in the 20s before he died. I had another great-grandfather that worked at the GE Lamp Plant in Warren. Dad's dad worked at Mullins Manufacturing before the war and got hired at Packard as a Millwright after he came home.

Underneath it all my collar is definitely blue and union made. I'm a wolf in sheep's clothing. hehe! :) After being a third generation Packard employee, the granddaughter and great granddaughter of steelworkers, and a born and bred Mahoning Valley girl, my collar will always be blue. The world has changed and I had to adapt by finishing my degree and taking a steep pay cut. Even now I'm making $10 less an hour than I was six years ago, hell, i'm making what i was making about ten years ago (not adjusted for inflation). After everything I've been through I'm still glad i took the buyout and I'm happy where I'm at. I miss my Packard family all the time, when you work that close to people for even a short period of time they become family. I may have had to sell my house and go through some hard times, but I'm still lucky. I live where I want to live, I'm near my family and I've learned some tough lessons. I've always been responsible and carried an excellent credit score, but now I actually live on a budget. My new job enables me to save money and if things go right my car will get paid off two years early. :)

You sure do have a lot of work experience for a young person! And that's cool that he calls you a "steelworker" and refers to his ancestors. It's clear that he sees you continuing a proud family tradition. I know a lot of families from the Valley want to do that but haven't been able to for the past 30+ years.

It's funny you say that about the work experience, when I interviewed w/the company president he was impressed by my work history. I'm just glad it makes me more marketable. At 32 and just 3 years out of college it gives me an edge over younger people that graduated at the same time, but have maybe only worked retail. I can say I've been a cashier, a wiring harness assembler, a press operator, an engineering lab technician (i setup and performed electrical tests on terminal interfaces), a quality control person, a beer cart driver, a Mary Kay sales girl, a customer service person, an accounts receivable clerk, an office manager, and now i do accounts payable. It sounds like there will be a lot of retirements at my new company w/in the next few years so there will be plenty of room to grow and I couldn't be happier!

Hey everyone!  Finally made the big move back to Ohio yesterday.  It's good to be back home.  On that note...

I woke up this morning and found the Vindicator sitting on my front porch to see some more new jobs coming to the area.  Didn't know if it was an old paper or not, but it was from today.  More and more good news out of the Valley.  I know it is the holidays, but traffic in Boardman/Poland/Canfield area seems busier than I remember it in years past.

Sorry Mods, realized I put this in the wrong thread and it has already been posted elsewhere.

No problem. Welcome back! Ohio missed you!!

Unemployment drops in Valley to 8.4 percent

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley received a Christmas gift a few days early this year.

The Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services reported Tuesday that the area’s unemployment rate in November nose-dived 2.1 percent compared to the same month last year.

The unemployment rate is now 8.4 percent, the lowest it has been since November 2008.

The Valley’s unemployment rate is now lower than the state rate, which in November was 8.5 percent.

So that would be about 7.4/7.5% factoring in seasonal employment. That ain't too shabby.
