ACME General creates defense technology development center in Youngstown

Quote

Youngstown will be home to a defense technology development center from ACME General Corp.

The Youngstown Business Incubator announced in a news release that ACME General will be putting the center on its campus, where the company will "work on next-generation software platforms and tools" for security and defense technologies.

"Having ACME General located on our campus is a true milestone for our organization," YBI CEO Barb Ewing said in the release. "ACME is an outstanding player in the defense industry. The fact that they want to be part of the community that we're building in Youngstown underscores the importance of the ecosystem that we're creating with our partners at America Makes, Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Research Innovation Institute (AMARII), Youngstown State U, and further afield, in El Paso, Texas."

In the release, ACME General's CEO David Bonfili said the company's goal is to "invest in communities with a demonstrated commitment to supporting innovative companies like ours," praising the talent in the region.

At about 4:30PM today on CNBC, Henrik Fisker said that in one day they already have got a thousand "reservations" for the Lordstown-built Pear. I don't know whether a reservation means a deposit or not.  Still, it's promising news.

Weren't lousy labor relations the reason GM closed Lordstown in the first place?

About six weeks late on this, but the big announcement was Fortune 500 Kimberly-Clark will be building a massive manufacturing facility at the site of the former RG Steel in Warren, a site that was said to be the largest shovel-ready site in all of Ohio.

This afternoon Governor Mike DeWine was in Niles, OH to announce the formation of the Lake to River Economic Development Agency, which will be the seventh and final regional agency of JobsOhio. This new agency will encompass Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties, which were previously served by TeamNEO. There was a big push in the Mahoning Valley to make this happen and Governor DeWine bought in.

Next up, another attempt at building a lake-to-river shipping channel!

Its no longer viable since the steel mills are mostly gone, due in part to the higher-cost railroads which are now mostly gone too!

Ohio invests $26M in Youngstown hub to advance 3D printing for defense

Ohio is creating a fourth innovation hub — this one in Youngstown — to advance additive manufacturing technology in support of the national defense industry.

The Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense will aim to connect government, academia and private-sector industry partners to help make the region an epicenter for additive manufacturing, known more commonly as 3-D printing.

The technology has advanced the production of military equipment by rapidly creating complex, customized parts, limiting a reliance on foreign manufacturing.

Foxconn to invest $26 million in Ohio EV subsidiary

A Taiwanese news source is reporting that global technology manufacturer Hon Hai Technology Group, better known as Foxconn, plans to "allocate more than $26 million U.S. dollars for its electric vehicle subsidiary based in the U.S. state of Ohio."

TaiwanPlus News did not say in its broadcast how the global tech giant plans to invest in its Ohio subsidiary, Foxconn EV Systems, but it is presumed the money would be used at Foxconn's 6.2-million-square-foot EV manufacturing plant in Lordstown Township, which it acquired from the now defunct Lordstown Motors Corp. in May 2022.

An email seeking clarification from Foxconn had not been returned by the time this story was published.

Good news for the region. Glad to hear a JEDD is part of the discussion since the site is (partially?) outside Warren corporation limits.
