Is the party over for The Yankee Trader?

Landmark store's possible closing is no laughing matter to loyal customers who have sought out its costumes, and prank and novelty items, for decades

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

By Gina Potthoff

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A well-known novelty and costume shop is selling the last of its fake vomit, whoopee cushions, plastic bugs and masks.  But what the future looks like for Yankee Trader is up in the air.  "We might move. We don't know yet," said Lynette Howard, who co-owns the store with her sister Debby Williams.

The two inherited the store at 463 N. High St., across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 10 years ago from their late mother, Edith Holler.  It has been a landmark there for 44 years and was on Front Street for 20 years before that.

Customers have noticed far less on the shelves recently.  Williams said they hope to sell the 55,000-square-foot building and move to a smaller place with better parking.

Wow, so they actually own the building.  Guess it isn't the rents driving them out then.

Yankee Trader closes

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Novelty and costume shop Yankee Trader has sold its last whoopee cushion.  A posting on the store's website yesterday read "store closed," and calls to the shop went unanswered.  Signs on the shop saying "out of business" were posted after the final Halloween sales.

The store, at 463 N. High St., across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center, has been a landmark at that address for 44 years and was on Front Street for 20 years before that.

Schiff buys loan on former Yankee Trader site

Business First - by Brian Ball

Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 11:51am EST

Columbus deal maker Michael Schiff has a “heads-I-win, tails-I-win” real estate play in the works for the former Yankee Trader by the North Market.  He may be close to winning, in fact.

The Schiff Capital Group principal has purchased the Fifth Third Bank mortgage ($350,000 as of November 2006) on the two buildings at 457 and 461-465 N. High St., under the YT Acquisition LLC affiliate.  Schiff confirmed the transaction but declined to reveal details on how much he paid.

Yankee Trader building sold; plans call for apartments, offices, restaurant

Friday, July 1, 2011  10:52 AM

By Marla Matzer Rose

The Columbus Dispatch

The building that housed the Yankee Trader, a fixture for decades in the Short North, has been sold to a local firm that plans to renovate the building as offices, apartments and ground-floor restaurant space.

Westerville-based Triad Architects hopes to move its offices to the site at 463 N. High St. in the fall of 2012.  The company also plans to renovate the top three floors of the five-story building into upscale one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Yankee Trader building sold with offices, restaurants, apartments on tap

The former home of the Yankee Trader costume and novelty store near the North Market in downtown Columbus is going to be dolled up for reuse.

Henry Price Investments LLC, a real estate affiliate of Triad Architects Ltd. , bought the building at 463 N. High St. for $900,000.  The Westerville company plans to move into 4,200 square feet on the second floor, while renovating the top three floors for a dozen apartments, said Triad Principal Zach Price.

^ That is some great news for the Yankee Trader Building.  In fact, it's hard to envision a more ideal situation than what is being planned.  First, it is being bought by a group of architects that want to keep and renovate this beautiful old building.  Second, the architects will be moving their 10-man office from Westerville into the second floor of the building.  Third, the ground floor will be renovated as a restaurant.  Fourth, the upper floors will be renovated into apartments.

You couldn't write up a better renovation plan for the Yankee Trader Building!  Kudos to Triad Architects!  And this will be a serious upgrade for this area too.  For as much fun as the quirky Yankee Trader business was, it really did underutilize the building.  A restaurant, an architect's office and three floors of apartments will bring much more activity to the area.

Below is a 2008 photo of the Yankee Trader Building.  Isn't it a beautiful old building that just needs some shining up?

Great news for the Yankee Trader Building renovation.  The project received an historic preservation tax credit award from the state.  Below is the news reported by Columbus Business First and an excerpt of the press release from the Ohio Department of Development:

From the press release: The Ohio Department of Development Announces Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit Awards

Yankee Trader Building (Columbus, Franklin County)

· Total Project Cost: $3,895,700

· Total Tax Credit: $664,900

· Address: 463 North High Street, 43215

Sandwiched between North Market and the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the Yankee Trader Building was originally constructed as a furniture store for the Parish family.  Previously used for more than four decades by Yankee Trader, a novelty and costume shop, the building was vacated in 2010.  Redevelopment plans include a fast-casual hamburger restaurant on the ground floor, office space for Triad Architects on the second floor, and 12 high-end apartments on the upper three floors.  The property will house more than 70 jobs upon completion of the rehabilitation project.

Another view and some updates about the Yankee Trader Building renovation from Columbus Underground.  First, the project has a new name and website.  The eleven apartments on floors 3 thru 5 are being marketed as the Yankee on High Apartments.  Full floorplans are available at their website www.yankeeonhigh.com.  TRIAD Architects is locating their office on the second floor.  And according to the update, there will be news to come about the ground floor retail space.

Below is a link to the report from Columbus Underground.  Below the link is a photo of the Yankee Trader Building looking southwest from High Street.  The recently completed Hilton Hotel, which is located one block south on High Street, is visible in the background:

And here is the news about the ground floor retail tenant for the Yankee Trader Building from Columbus Underground.  Bareburger, a restaurant chain that specializes in gourmet organic burgers, will be the tenant.  Bareburger started in Brooklyn in 2009 and has 12 locations in New York state.  According to the article, Bareburger will open in five to six months.

Another gourmet burger restaurant, Flip Side, originally committed for this retail space but backed out before construction began.  Below is the link to the article from Columbus Underground:

Denmark & Secret Cellar coming soon to Yankee on High

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on August 13, 2013 - 10:50 pm

Not one, but two new bars will be opening up Downtown in mid-October with the introduction of Denmark on High and The Secret Cellar, both located inside the Yankee on High building next to the Convention Center.

The two bars will share an entrance to a stairwell that will lead up to Denmark on the mezzanine level, or downstairs to the Secret Cellar in the basement.  The Cellar will function as a beer, wine and snack retail shop with a private event space that can serve up to 50 guests.  Denmark will open as a modern cocktail lounge featuring upscale bar snacks, handcrafted libations, and a wall-to-wall window view looking down onto High Street below.

(. . .)

Both bars are currently targeted for an October 16th opening date, with Bareburger opening a month afterward on the first floor of the building, and the building’s first residents moving into their apartments within the next few weeks.

Bareburger making Central Ohio debut with Short North restaurant

bareburger-yankee-trader*304.jpg

It’s fitting that a New York-based restaurant would be attracted to a building called Yankee. Bareburger will make the Short North its first better-burger bar outside its home market when it opens in the Yankee on High building this month.

It’ll be the 18th restaurant for the five-year-old chain and the first for local franchisees George Mathew, Chuck Xu and Ben Christopher.

More about the businesses filling up the renovated Yankee Trader building, now known as the Yankee on High, at 463 N. High Street:

Restaurant, bar to open on Yankee Trader site

By Tim Feran, The Columbus Dispatch

Saturday, February 8, 2014 - 5:33 AM

An organic burger restaurant and several upscale bars will open soon in the building that once housed the Yankee Trader store.  “It’s been fantastic,” said Zach Price, principal at Triad Architects, which owns the building and occupies part of its second floor. “We are a truly mixed-use building with a restaurant, bar, offices and residences all in the same building.”

Triad Architects, based in the Short North, acquired the five-story building at 463 N. High St. in 2011 for $900,000.  For decades, the building housed the Yankee Trader store, a purveyor of party goods and novelty items.  The organic burger restaurant Bareburger will occupy about 5,000 square feet of the first floor.  When it opens in early March, it will become the chain’s 18th location and its first outside the New York City area.

(. . .)

Other businesses opening in the building by March 10 include Denmark, the Secret Cellar and the North Room, said Daniel Morris, managing partner of all three.  Denmark, a European-style cocktail lounge with modernistic decor, will occupy about 1,500 square feet on the second floor.  The bar’s sibling facilities will occupy a combined 1,700 square feet in the stone-walled basement.  The Secret Cellar will offer wine, beer and cheese.  A private party facility, the North Room, will hold as many as 50 people.

Some looks at the new businesses going into the former Yankee Trader building from Columbus Underground.  First, the ground floor tenant, Bareburger.

Below are two views of the front part of the restaurant facing High Street.  The front entrance is visible in the left image (just under the 463 painted on the glass).  The second image on the right shows the other half of this front part of the restaurant.  Visible on the wall over the booths is the original Yankee Trader business signage that faced High Street.  More images (and larger versions of the ones below) at http://www.columbusunderground.com/bareburger-opening-downtown-this-month-aw1

Bareburger Columbus plans to hold a soft opening on March 24th, and officially launch on March 31st.  Their hours of operation will be Monday-Thursday, 11am – 10pm, Friday-Saturday, 11am – midnight, and Sundays, 11am – 5pm.  Once brunch begins, they will open at 9am on Saturdays.

Next, the second floor tenant Denmark and the basement level tenant, The Secret Cellar.

Denmark and the Secret Cellar officially open their doors this Friday, March 14th.  Upon entering the door to the right of the Bareburger entrance on the ground floor, you encounter a stairwell pointing you upstairs to Denmark or downstairs to the Secret Cellar.  According to the CU article, "The Secret Cellar can best be described as a cozy upscale convenience store featuring beer, wine and other beverages as well as locally sourced snacks, coffee and more" and "Up above on the second floor, Denmark looks out onto High Street with large floor-to-ceiling windows and a comfortable lounge environment".

Below is a image of the view of High Street from Denmark on the second floor.  The Convention Center is across the street.  Also below is an image of the front of the renovated Yankee Trader building.  More images of second floor tenant Denmark and basement level tenant, The Secret Cellar, at http://www.columbusunderground.com/first-look-denmark-and-the-secret-cellar

More about this area from CU: http://www.columbusunderground.com/stack-city-burger-bar-to-open-on-the-cap-this-summer

- The CU article reports: "The Cleveland-based restaurant group also owns a three story building several blocks south at the northwest corner of Vine and High, which has future plans there for another restaurant concept."  This is the building with the boarded-up windows located next the Yankee Trader Building that was recently renovated.

After checking with the County Auditor's website, the Hyde Park restaurant group does own both of the three-story buildings shown in the above photo next to the Yankee Trader Building.  Hopefully it won't be too long before Hyde Park moves on their concept for this location and restores these buildings.
