Posted February 1, 201114 yr I visited my second favorite city, Buffalo, New York, on New Year's Eve day to take in the World Junior tournament games (Canada/Sweden and USA/Switzerland) and join in the New Year's Eve ball drop at Roosevelt Square in downtown Buffalo. I couldn't think of a better place to conclude my 2010 year! Without further ado, here's my pics from that day/night... General Mills, where all the world's Cheerios are made... HSBC Arena and Skyline from the south... Swannie House, on Ohio and Michigan streets, this makes equally as good of Wings as the Anchor Bar and a lot less busy! Downtown from Michigan Avenue... Canadian Tailgaters... These fans are ready for the game between Canada and Sweden... HSBC Arena, home of the 2011 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships, and the Buffalo Sabres Yes, it was that JAMMED getting into the arena, Canada loves its hockey. Sea of Red and White in the main concourse Canada and Sweden practising... Team Canada Sea of red and white in the stands Opening faceoff... Canada scores less than a minute in to make it 1-0! But Sweden tied it and their fans in section 102 get happy about it... 1st period action... Sweden takes the lead 2-1... But Canada ties it up! Then with 0.5 seconds left in the 1st period, Canada takes the lead, 3-2! 2nd period start... Early in the second, Sweden scored early to tie the game and then again to take the lead... But Canada ties it, 4-4! Third period... Canada takes the lead, 5-4 on a power play... but Sweden eventually tied it... The game would eventually go to a shootout... Canada player taking a shot... But Sweden won 2-0 in the shootout. They were by far the better team this game.Canada played terrible, IMO, and were LUCKY to send it to a shootout. Meaning Sweden gets a bye into the semfinals and Canada has to play whoever loses the next game... Team Canada, disappointed with the loss... Final score of 6-5 for the Swedes... Night shot of downtown from outside the arena... Outside the HSBC Arena, getting ready for Game 2 with the USA and Switzerland... This crowd seemed "normal" compared to the Canada game... USA/Switzerland practising... Mood here is a bit sombre... compared to the Canada/Sweden game... Team USA practising, I, of course, was cheering for them! 1st period action... It's the Swiss who jump out to a 1-0 lead... Still in the 1st... USA scores to tie the game at 1. Lots of Canadian fans in this crowd, most were cheering for the Swiss, I wasn't. 2nd period action... Sabretooth, mascot of the Sabres, is having a good time... USA makes it 2-1 in the second... 3rd period playing... Team USA hung on for a 2-1 win, advanced to the semi-finals... Post-game ceremonies... Playing of Star-Spangled Banner... After the game, hopping abord the Buffalo Metro Rail to Fountain Plaza... Downtown Buffalo, getting set for the New Year's Eve celebrations... Electric Tower in Roosevelt Square, where Buffalo's Ball Drop New Year's Eve event took place. Look at all the people downtown!!! There's the ball itself... More than Me, a Buffalo rock band performs... 50,000 people jammed downtown, equal or more than the amount of people downtown for Y2K. Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, pointing to the crowd 5 minutes left in 2011... Here comes the ball... Jumbotron showing the scenes in New York City and here in Buffalo. 2011 is here! Fireworks at the Electric Tower!!! Happy 2011 Everyone, from Buffalo, New York! Hope you enjoyed my pictures from New Year's Eve! More to come from the World Junior tournament in Buffalo!

February 2, 201114 yr Great photo set and play-by-play. We don't see a lot of Buffalo photos on UO; looks like a place I should visit (in warmer weather).
February 2, 201114 yr ^ Really? Not much Buffalo on urbanohio? I go to Buffalo A LOT, and have taken quite a few picture over the years. I think urbanohio will get a good taste of Buffalo over the coming weeks. :D
