Posted February 7, 201114 yr I was thinking of taking my girlfriend to Shaker Square for Valentines day but I want to take her on the train through all of the beatuiful areas of Shaker. But she rarely rides the train and I am wondering how safe the train ride back from Shaker to downtown will be. We will be riding back probably around 9ish on Monday night.
February 7, 201114 yr As long as it does not catch on fire (like last week) I think you will be fine. Have you heard about a rash of murders or robberies on the Blue and Green Lines lately (and don't question Shaker Square or you will have MTS all over your butt)?
February 7, 201114 yr By the way, if you are only going between downtown and Square Square you won't be riding through the "beautiful" areas of Shaker.
February 8, 201114 yr oh yah? damn... what would be a nice ride to take where we start at Tower City and end up at Shaker Square ?
February 8, 201114 yr Well...if you want to do the rapid through Shaker you could take the Green Line all the way to the end. You will end up at the Green Rd station and you could then take a short cab ride to a number of good restaurants on Chagrin Rd. The only thing is, I would call the cab way before the stop so you don't freeze waiting for it at the station.
February 8, 201114 yr Floods7,. I've taken the train with my wife many times to Shaker Square for dinner(we live in the Warehouse District) and never have had any problems whatsoever. I've taken the train as late as two a.m. from the airport. Try sitting towards the front of the train where there will be more people. It will make you feel more comfortable.
February 8, 201114 yr Don't the trains stop around 12:30? If you're riding the train just to ride it through the nice areas of Shaker, you could ride the Green Line to the end (Green Rd.) and back to Shaker Square (I don't think they'll even make you get off at the end). Riding back at 9 pm should be fine. My experience (aesthetically) at night, though, has been that you really can't see too much. I'm not so sure riding to the end of the line and back would really be worth it (although you go through some areas with really nice apartments - cue MTS - and houses) unless there's still daylight outside. The large houses and apartments are set back a little bit and Shaker Blvd. is a little dimly lit, so at night you don't take in too much.
February 8, 201114 yr You are right JAM40jeff. I could have sworn the trains used to run till around two?? Maybe it wasn't as late as two the time I was thinking. The current schedule does say 12:30 approx.
February 8, 201114 yr It can be difficult to see anything out of the windows at night while riding through Shaker. You will be looking at your reflection more than anything else. The rapid is a great resource, but scenic it is not IMO. Why are you so dead set on Shaker Square? *ducks*
February 8, 201114 yr You are right JAM40jeff. I could have sworn the trains used to run till around two?? Maybe it wasn't as late as two the time I was thinking. The current schedule does say 12:30 approx. The Red Line runs later (on the west side) than the Blue/Green lines and the east-side Red Line. And back when the Flats was rockin', the Red Line ran until 2 a.m. on the weekends. Take the train to Shaker Square. And as much as I'm a train guy, I would never advertise the Rapid as romantic. It's functional but not romantic. Save the romance for when you arrive -- I think a walk around Shaker Square in the evening (no matter what the weather is) can be very romantic. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 8, 201114 yr I agree with KJP, the train is a great convenience but not the most romantic. However, Shaker Square is very romantic any time of the year. That's where I am going for Valentine's Day. As a matter of fact, Shaker Square was where I convinced my wife to move from Boston to Cleveland and here we are four years later with a 17 month old.
