Posted February 8, 201114 yr Yes, I'm planning ahead, I finally want my very own packzis this year. Who can recommend a good bakery for these - W side, SW side or downtown only please, thanks!
February 8, 201114 yr I had no idea what you were talking about and had to look it up. Packzi - A pączek is a deep-fried piece of dough shaped into a flattened sphere and filled with confiture or other sweet filling. Pączki are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing or bits of dried orange zest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%85czki These are very similar in practice to Slovenian 'krofe', which are sold one Saturday a month at St. Vitus Church in the school auditorium. I would call the rectory to find out which Saturday exactly. The difference is that they won't have jelly inside -- they are plain only. For Slovenians, it's not a Fat Tuesday thing. Just a standard part of the cuisine. I grew up eating them for breakfast. For real Polish packzi, a quick Google search turned up a few Slavic Village bakeries: Seven Roses Deli or Gertrude's Bakery. Good luck!
February 8, 201114 yr You sure as hell can't get them here and NOBODY has clue when I mention them. When our one and only authentic Polish restaurant closed, we all were sad...and making pilgrimages to Detoit or Chicago for packzi seems a bit excentric, even for me! We have to settle for Russian or Ukranian similar products (not the same by a long shot). We could get them in Canton when I was a kid..but that was in the 60s. Things may have changed just a bit.....but with the huge Polish population in Cleveland seems like it would be a no-brainer!
February 9, 201114 yr I like the paczkis from Kiedrowski's in Amherst, and there's a place in Parma that has good ones too. The name's escaping me now, but maybe I'll think of it later.
February 9, 201114 yr Thanks, guys. I would think Parma for sure would have something. I know I've seen them at work on Fat Tuesday but they're usually from somewhere like Giant Eagle.
February 9, 201114 yr There is a bakery in Parma that is known for the on Fat Tuesday but make them year round. THey are always on the morning news on Fat Tuesday...the name escapes me, may just wanna google it.

February 9, 201114 yr Whenever I think of quitting on Cleveland, it's these kinds of ethnic specialties and venues that offer them that keep me from walking away. Yeah, sometimes Cleveland pisses me off, but I wouldn't go completely nuts unless I wasn't able to partake of its good sides anymore by my leaving them behind. February 9, 201114 yr Thanks you guys!! KJP, I completely agree with your post about not being able to quit, even on a horribly cold morning like today. It's too special and unique.
February 9, 201114 yr It was cold this morning? JK. By the way Packzis are OK but my favorite ethnic donuts are the fresh fried chunks of dough spirinkled with the sugar at the Italian festivals. MMMmmm Straight from the fryer into my belly.
February 9, 201114 yr You can try Gentile's Imported Italian Foods and Michael's Bakery in Old Brooklyn. Both are on Broadview Road and are only a few storefronts apart. I give both high accolades.

And there's the West Side Market in Summer, with the smells of melons and sweet corn in the produce arcade, and sausages and spices inside. And ...
March 7, 201114 yr The Paczki are Here! A sure sign of Spring in any Polish community is the arrival of the paczki (pronounced "punch-key"). These jelly-filled, deep-fried pastries, dusted with powdered sugar (something like American jelly doughnuts), are traditionally served the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. In America, the delicious pastries start appearing in bakeries and neighborhood food stores about a month in advance. http://cleveland.about.com/b/2011/02/26/the-paczki-are-here.htm?nl=1
March 11, 201114 yr I tried Graeters this year in Cincinnati. They were about the same as they were from Busken. It's just sad that i have to settle for this when growing up i had Hamtramck just down the road.
