I used a portable video camera to record a video for someone I know. The problem is that I can't figure out how to transfer the video from the tape in the camera onto my computer. Any one good with these kinds of things that can help? Thanks!

You can use a video capture card and play the video to your computer over AV cables.  If you see FireWire/1394/iLink or this symbol

 

you can stream it over a firewire cable to your computer.  Since it has a tape I'd say those are your two most likely options but there are other possibilities.  I'm about 6 years removed from selling camcorders so I can't really be more specific than that without instructions.  They're usually pretty easy to find online if you have a make/model number handy.
