Posted February 22, 201114 yr Buffalo, New York (Winter 2011) Phototour: Elmwood Village, Delaware Park, World Junior Hockey and more: Part 2 I visited good ol' Buffalo from January 2-6, 2011 to attend the World Junior Hockey Tournament and to take in the sights and sounds of the city. This is Part 2 including Elmwood Village, Delaware Park, Lincoln Parkway, and the rest of the World Junior medal games. Downtown Buffalo from my hotel room @ night, using a tripod... Old Homes on North Street This Library was originally a Church of Christ, Scientist (Christian Science Church) built in 1911... Scenes from Elmwood Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church on Elmwood Avenue, built in 1904 on land owned by John Albright, famed Buffalo industrialist who also had the art gallery named after him. Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, built in Buffalo Seminary Building... built in 1908. Bidwell Parkway homes... Homes on historic Lincoln Parkway... John W. Bush House, built in 1903 McKinney House, built between 1927 and 1929 Larkin House, built in 1915 Appleton House Ethel Mann Curtiss House, built in 1905 by James A. Johnson for Harlow Clarke Curtiss, a prominent lawyer and real estate developer back in the early 20th century Edgar F. Wendt House, built in 1916 Spencer Kellogg Jr. House, built in 1912 Edward H. Webster House, built in 1908 Delaware Park, snow-covered... Albright-Knox Art Gallery, built in 1905... Buffalo State College Outside of an exhibit called FORTY, the Buffalo Sabres (NHL team in BUffalo) experience HHOF trophy exhibit @ Albright-Knox, the Prince of Wales Trophy, presented to the Eastern Conference Champions, the Sabres have won this 3 times... Presidents' Trophy presented to the team with the best regular season record and points... the Sabres won this in 2007... Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the MVP of the playoffs Hart Memorial Trophy, given to the MVP of the regular season Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's rookie of the year... Art Ross Trophy, given to the player who scores the most points (goals and assists combined) in the regular season Norris Trophy, given to the league's best defenceman... Stanley Cup, given to the champions of the NHL. Hello, Lord Stanley, fancy seeing you here in Buffalo... Yours truly with the Cup... FORTY: the Sabres in the NHL exhibit @ the Albright-Knox Gallery The old Aud under construction... The great Gordie Howe... Ryan Miller Dominik Hasek Lindy Ruff Rob Ray, shirtless after a fight, his trademark Sabres gameplay in 360, a camera was installed on a player's helmet to show what it's like to be on the ice during a real game. The French Connection Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, built in 1901, this is the only remaining structure left from that famous Pan-Am Exposition held in Buffalo. City Hall under construction... Civic Square realization and planning... Yes, it's true, Buffalo made just about everything back in its heyday as a blue-collar city back in the first half of the 20th century... Cute animated map of Buffalo... Old-school Buffalo aerial... Mansions on Nottingham Terrace... Annie Lang Miller House, constructed 1929-1933 for Annie Lang Miller, daughter of brewer Gerhard Lang and her husband became president of Lang Brewery. Caught the subway at Delevan/Canisius College... having this in Buffalo is very handy... HSBC Arena one more time!... Game 1, BRONZE medal game: USA vs. Sweden... Opening faceoff... Sweden scores early to make it 1-0... But not long after, team USA tied it at 1! Skip ahead to the 3rd period... USA scores to make it 2-1! USA scores another one to take a two goal lead! But Sweden pulled to within one... but not before the US put the game out of reach, making it 4-2! The crowd this game was Pro-USA, even though a lot of Canadian fans were here early... USA wins! Wins the bronze medal, first time in World Junior history that Team USA has won back-to-back medals... Players of the game awards... Chris Kreider of Team USA receives his... Three best players of the tournament for team USA, Charlie Coyle, John Merrill, and goaltender Jack Campbell. IIHF committee handing USA their Bronze medals... Star-spangled banner being raised to the rafters... Night shot of One HSBC Center, Buffalo's tallest building at 40 storeys high HSBC Arena @ night before the BIG GOLD MEDAL game... Sea of Red in the concourse Team Canada taking to the ice along with Team Russia for pre-game practice... Yes, folks, being as Buffalo is across the river from Canada, we have a PRO-CANADIAN crowd here... SEA OF RED... I have never been in an arena this loud EVER! Team Canada coming out before the drop of the puck... Buffalo mayor Byron Brown and Hall of Fame Coach Scotty Bowman dropping the ceremonial puck... Opening faceoff! CANADA SCORES FIRST!!! Jumbotron malfunctioned... SCORES!!! 2-0 Canada!!! Me @ the Gold Medal game... Start of the second period... Brayden Schenn, Canada's best player @ the tournament, makes it 3-0 CANADA!!! But unfortunately, the tables started to turn midway through the second period... Canadian fans content... for now. This may be the turning point, a huge hit on Vladimir Tarasenko, he went down hard, but did return to the game... Canada failed to convert on its numerous power play chances... Start of the third period... Russia scores two minutes in to get themselves back in the game... Then again, Maxim Kitsyn scored 13 seconds later... TROUBLE FOR CANADA! OH NO!!! WTF didn't Dave Cameron call timeout here? I guess it might not have mattered... it's 3-2 CANADA. Later on, Vladimir Tarasenko tied the game for Russia, the 3-0 lead is gone... Russia just took over this game... Russia puts the final nail in the coffin, after taking the lead 4-3, they add insurance, making it 5-3. GAME OVER! RUSSIA WINS THE GOLD MEDAL!!! Canada has to settle for Silver for the second year in a row... Scotty Bowman presented Cody Eakin with the player of the game award for Canada... Ryan Ellis, Brayden Schenn and Jared Cowen won top 3 players for Team Canada... Vladimir Tarasenko, goalie Dmitri Shikin, and not sure who else... were Russia's top 3 players... All-Star team selection including U.S. goalie Jack Campbell and Brayden Schenn from Canada... The Canadians being given their Silver medals... Team Canada can only watch now... as the Russians celebrate... Russians coming over to get their gold medals... Team Russia with the IIHF World Junior Trophy... Team Russia and their national anthem... Russia and Canada players with the congratulatory handshakes, one of the best traditions in hockey... Team Canada raising their sticks to salute the fans that stuck around, including myself... Russian team photos Celebratory dance for Russia... The Russians cherishing the trophy... The mood leaving the arena, sombre... bitter disappointment. But, hey, there's always next year... GO CANADA!!! What an amazing tournament!

February 23, 201114 yr Some really nice architecture! I wish Cincinnati would upgrade it's history museum to include more facts about the layout and development of the city like Buffalo has (Pittsburgh also has a wonderful museum similar to this).
February 23, 201114 yr Buffalo's recognition in historic architecture circles is well-deserved as these photos vividly demonstrate. The challenge today is to preserve these reminders of the City's glorious past. Thanks for sharing.
