Posted February 23, 201114 yr kyoto: higashiyama (east mountain) NE & E kyoto http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higashiyama-ku,_Kyoto cold winter getting to ya? this long & leisurely thread will warm you up! :-D enjoy warm summer greenery, atmospheric temples, amazing woodwork, gardens, homes and sights in probably the most popular hiking areas of kyoto: nanzen ji temple grounds (est 1291) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanzen-ji the titanic sanmon gate (1628) nanzen ji temple interior and the old sousui (supply of water) or suirokaku aqueduct that once brought water from lake biwa to kyoto (1889) up the mountainside to the secluded oku no in (honorable ninth place?), not often visited by gaijin tourists best described in espanol -- muy mysterioso! coming off the mountain tetsugaku no michi aka the philosophers path the path gets its name due to nishida kitaro, one of japan's most famous philosophers, who was said to practice meditation while walking this route on his daily commute to kyoto university. today it’s pretty suburban, but still interesting. note that in the spring it’s one of kyoto’s most popular hanami or cherry blossom viewing walks. housing, etc. along the ‘path of philosophy’ picturesque thatched gate of the honen-in temple at the foot of mt. nyoigadake (est. 1680) contemplative sand garden designs! grounds of the honen-in treats after a hot summer walk ;) more eastern kyoto sights a beautiful winding gion alley here (i believe its called ishibei kouji) sannen zaka street finally…a real maiko gave me a wink! (maiko=geisha in training) she was the only one we ever saw, there are not many geisha anymore *** i hope you enjoyed the strolls/hikes in gorgeous higashiyama aka the eastside mountains of kyoto ***
