The project, called 5115 at The Rising, represents the largest capital investment made in the neighborhood in more than 25 years.

Very excited for this!  I have a lot of love for Slavic Village so much potential here.

Picture today looking out from the Velodrome also (because why not) here's some Velodrome pics too (boards are being replaced/repaired).

I was at the Sokol Center on Friday evening and if I wasn't running late, I would've snapped some pics of SV Gateway as well. I wondered why there was a construction trailer at the Velodrome. I didn't know they were doing work there, too.

Just a side note with the Velodrome, the construction trailer serves as their office/storage/etc. so I wouldn't read into that at all.

Big commerce park planned for Slavic Village

By Ken Prendergast / November 5, 2021

On a 40-acre infill site east of Interstate 77 in Cleveland’s Slavic Village, Atlanta-based Stonemont Financial Group and real estate brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) intend to market and develop up to 500,000 square of warehousing and distribution facilities.

This would be a big win for this neighborhood because it's far more walkable for the neighborhood than the rest of the new builds on the other side of the highway. People in the neighborhood without a car could easily access these jobs. There's thousands of people just in that small area around that potential site that could use better employment.

Great to see this. When I first opened the article, I was expecting it to be for the site on the other side of 77 where Amazon was going to go. What a pleasant surprise to see another big property now in play.

I added "east of the highway" in the intro but that's probably not enough to be obvious.

Return to the old days.  50 years ago this neighborhood was filled with people who walked to the various manufacturing jobs located there or by bus from nearby Maple and Garfield Hts.

My grandfather was one of them. Now I have the pleasure of patrolling it. It's sad. The neighborhood has so much potential, these jobs will help.

My paternal grandpa and my dad both worked at Cleveland Pneumatic back in the day.   They drove in from Macedonia, a little further.

Lee Boyas (the excavating company) is married to one of the Morabitos, it's his daughters I know so I think its Ben but aren't sure.  So Boyas is likely involved too.

One cautionary note:  warehousing and distribution is not the employment source it once was, especially of people that don't have tech skills.  Maple Heights (imo stupidly) actually had limits on property usage for such, for this exact reason.

Edited by E Rocc

I used live in that area as a kid.  That In-fill site was a gully where all the kids used to hang out at.

Tons of memories.  Then it got in-filled.

While not a huge source of employment this development is good news. Not only does it add to jobs in the city as Ken mentioned this infill site will save an undeveloped property in (perhaps a piece of farmland or even a wooded property) from development.

BOOMING! More big East Side warehouses coming
By Ken Prendergast / November 18, 2021

More than 1,000 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of investment are some of the potential spin-off benefits from multiple large warehousing projects blooming on Cleveland’s East Side — along the Opportunity Corridor and in Slavic Village.

Two of the projects are reportedly a direct result of the Opportunity Corridor roadway project which opened to traffic last weekend. But all of them are the result of the city’s efforts in recent years of assembling many contiguous parcels of land into larger, development-ready sites. The efforts are being rewarded by investors’ interest in developing numerous large warehouses and distribution centers.

Four regional trail projects advance

By Ken Prendergast / November 18, 2021

Cleveland Metroparks today announced it was awarded $950,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to advance the planning and design of four regional transportation projects that encompass 5.7 miles of trail and bicycle connections on Cleveland’s East Side and in the city of Euclid. Three of the four projects impact Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood and the southeast side of the city.

Updated this article with quotes from city development director David Ebersole. Both warehouse projects were approved by planning commission.

All in all this is good news. There's an obvious need for large modern warehouses. Every one built in the city provides local jobs for city workers plus each one built in the city preserves outlying forest or farmland. At least for the time being.

Still l wonder what percent of the goods stored are imports? Looking forward to the day when the bulk of goods stored are manufactured in the US. Let's shorten that supply chain Mr. CEO.

Social service provider University Settlement gets $400,000 challenge grant

Stan Bullard - Crain's Cleveland Business - Dec. 16, 2021

NRP_Group_SlavicVillageExterior_i.jpg?ad

"Pike said in a phone interview Thursday, Dec. 16, that University Settlement has received a challenge grant from The George Gund Foundation of Cleveland for $400,000 toward the cost of installing the new headquarters and service center for the social service provider on the ground floor of 5115 The Rising. ... Pike said Gund provided the incentive grant as a means to entice additional donors for the $5.9 million cost of his group's portion of the project. ... Pike said University Settlement plans to include in its 20,000-square-foot space a commercial kitchen, a next-generation food pantry that operates like a grocery store, a room for Cuyahoga Community College to offer training in technology and a clinic for visiting medical providers."

So the owner of Prosperity Social Club and Spotted Owl just bought 3664 and 3652 east 65th St. I know this because we have a special attention to watch the properties while they're being renovated.

One of them used to be rooftop bar, and still has a significant second floor bar and patio on the rear that's in great shape. Both these properties are in a quieter area of Slavic Village, right across from St. Stans and Cleveland Central Catholic. Obviously Red Chimney is right down the road.

If anyone can find out anything more I'd appreciate it.

SVD has been working with the new owners for the past threr years. We'll have an announcement shortly regarding the new project!

Oh man, 3664 was up for sale a few years ago and I drove by too many times to count. Really looked like a neat space- I know previous owner had a coffee shop(?) and music space or something like that (trying to remember to the old listing). It has some real potential assuming the brick is in okay shape! Definitely jealous haha

Amazon back in the mix in Slavic Village
By Ken Prendergast / March 25, 2022

Amazon is reportedly pivoting to a new site for a distribution center on the southeast side of the city yet would remain in Slavic Village, according to two sources familiar with the project. The e-commerce giant will apparently be the anchor for a new warehouse development reported exclusively by NEOtrans on a 40-acre site that could grow further if additional properties around the fringes are added to it.

Wait they have an agreement to develop the land near East 55th train station as another warehouse??

Painting the extensions is a good start, but actually building them would be even better. When they repaved/restriped Pearl Rd through Old Brooklyn, the new lanes worked pretty well for a few months. Now people use painted extensions as passing zones and turn lanes. Denison is even worse.

Great to see! We have permanent curb bump outs in Shaker and they work great at forcing people to slow down. I pushed for these in South Euclid too (to no avail). The painted extensions are a great start, and should be much more effective on these residential side streets. The plastic bollards too - hope those are staying and not just for safety while they were painting.

It will be pretty funny to see how many people flatten their tires when they go to drive onto the painted bumpouts and realized they're now concrete and a step up.
