Bellefontaine, Ohio

population 13,069. seat of logan county. often misspelled. has the first concrete street , also the shortest street (17 feet). close by is the highest point in ohio at mount campbell, 1550 feet. near some ski resorts, old castles and other historical bric-a-brac, such as blue jacket (the guy the hockey team was named after).

i think almost everyone in bellefontaine is a hoosier (not meaning to offend the indiana people)

Nice shots of bell-FOWN-ten!

I've always wanted to know what Bellefontaine looks like! From these photos, it looks like a very nice, quaint town.

I also wanted to add how cool it is that you've gone and provided such a great array of photo tours of so many of Ohio's often overlooked small towns. Awesome work.

Nice town, nice buildings, nice pics! The Top-of_Ohio bikeway is anchored there, and Zane Caverns are nearby; the last I knew, maps of the bike route were available at the library. I rode it several years ago, and it's decent; it goes by many of the area attractions. It's hilly!

Bellefontaine is actually pretty sucky compared to Urbana, which has some excellent old architecture, including a grand social row running east of downtown.

Does this go past the Piatt Castles and the villiage of Zanesfield? Yes, the countryside around there is suprisingly hilly. I think there is (was?) even a ski resort there.

Mad River Mountain is the ski resort.

That's the one. I can't remember which direction I rode the loop, but I remember that I could see downtown and the courthouse from a hilltop about a mile out, and it was all coasting from there on.

I just noticed the building to the right, I think it may be the worst cladding job EVER.

The Columbus Blue Jackets were not named after Blue Jacket. In fact, at the press conference several years ago unveiling the team name and mascot, I'm told team officials were baffled by a reporter's question about whether the team was named for the Indian chief.

Is that some kind of trolley pole in that photo. The black box is horrible.

Nice shots of bell-FOWN-ten!

First time I heard Bell-fawn-tain, I just tood there & looked at the guy who said it like he was nuts as he looked at me like I was some kinda hick redneck.

Wll, at least i had actually been to the place.

what, no historical marker for the namesake of the county?

First of all, Hello   ...I ran across this posting while surfing today at work. I am from Bellefontaine, Ohio and have lived here all my life (unfortunately).  I saw the photo's of Bellefontaine that you have and they are good photos. If you have any general questions about Bellefontaine, you are more than welcome to ask me. I'll try to answer them. Otherwise, thanks and have a good day!

bellefontaine seemed like it was an indiana city that somehow slid over into ohio. not a bad thing though

Cool photos. I have never seen this city before.

I passed through there on the way to and from the Columbus meet. There used to be a sign outside of town along the highway, marking the highest point in Ohio, but I watched for it and didn't see it this time.

Bellfontaine used to have a beautiful old train station as well.  Gone now.

Here's a photo of it back in the day ..... waaaay back in the day>

Bellefontaine also had a roundhouse and railroad yard...it was an important junction in 19th and early 20th century railroading.

I am planning on heading up that area later this month for a rock festival over at Zane Caverns.  Hope to visit the Top of Ohio (Campbell Hill) , Piatt Castles, the whole area up there, and take some pix.  Maybe not so much of Bellefontaine as its been done well here...more that neat hilly countryside to the east.
