March 23, 201114 yr Detroit is just heartbreaking. 700,000 was actually the worst case scenario estimate for the 2020 census! And Detroit has a lot more losses ahead of it due to the rampant long-term unemployment (some estimates are showing it's even worse than Toledo and Dayton in this category). I won't be surprised if it doesn't level off until 500,000 people. What this census is showing is what we knew all along- people are leaving the Rust Belt cities in droves.
March 23, 201114 yr This is a suicidal move for America. No one can afford to spend 50 years building massive cities and then just desert them. And the ones we're building now are far less sustainable.
March 23, 201114 yr With the amount of foreclosures Cleveland saw during the last few years, I would at least expect a similar percentage sized drop-off in Detroit, if not larger. Detroit may be kissing 700,000 now. Can't say I'm too surprised. Wall Street f#cked this country... and we're still dealing with it. The cities that built this country have taken the brunt of the losses experienced this census.
March 23, 201114 yr It is depressing when you see what kind of cities are growing and what kind of cities are shrinking. America is going to fuck itself over if we dont do something about this.
March 23, 201114 yr what we knew all along- people are leaving the Rust Belt cities in droves. Well that’s not really true. People are leaving certain areas in droves. We all knew that Detroit had been hard hit when the auto industry really hit hard times in recent years – combine that with long term issues and the worst economic crisis since the Depression and well, it just wasn’t going to be good for Detroit, or a lot of Michigan and Ohio with similar economies. But as we all know, Columbus, Indy, the Twin Cities are doing well. Chicago may have suffered within the city, but the metro is fine and will continue to be. Some smaller metros are doing well too. This is not to downplay some serious issues and clearly Michigan and Ohio in particular have major problems Obviously some cities in these states are not considered “rust belt” but they are part of rust belt states.
March 23, 201114 yr One of the "bright" spots in the Michigan census was Monroe County, though the city of Monroe lost people. Monroe is its own MSA, but is thrown in with the Detroit CSA (but that could change). Most of the growth in Monroe County was in Bedford Township (Toledo suburbs), so I'm thinking it might get added to Toledo's MSA. The share between Detroit and Toledo is shifting towards Toledo. Also noteworthy is Lenawee County. It was stagnangt, but in Southeast Michigan, that's doing pretty well. Lenawee is part of Toledo's market area, but not any MSA or CSA (no idea if that could change). So here are some stats for Toledo's suburbs and satellite cities in Michigan: Toledo's Michigan Suburbs Beford Township (includes Temperance and Lambertville): 31,085 +7.8% Whiteford Township: 4,602 +2.7% Erie Township: 4,517 -.7% Luna Pier: 1,436 -3.2% Toledo's Michigan Satellite Cities Adrian: 21,133 -5.3% Monroe: 20,733 -6.1% Tecumseh: 8,521 -1.6% Dundee Township (includes Dundee): 6,759 +6.6% Overall, Southeast Michigan was pretty bad with the exception of Ann Arbor/Washtenaw County (Ann Arbor MSA grew by 6.8% making it the state's second fastest-growing MSA after Holland-Grand Haven). Smaller urban areas like Monroe and Adrian are starting to bleed at more significant rates even though their counties are stable. Despite losses in Wayne County, some of Detroit's urban suburbs did alright like Dearborn and Hamtramck. Further north, satellite cities like Pontiac saw dramatic losses though. As expected, Flint saw huge losses (down 18%, so not quite as bad as Detroit). Michigan as a state is a mixed bag, but I wouldn't call Southeast Michigan a mixed bag. Overall, most cities and suburbs in Southeast Michigan lost people with the exception of the Ann Arbor area. This was the worst census in quite some time, maybe ever. Thank God Grand Rapids did alright.

March 24, 201114 yr Louisville "gained" 484K residents, and now has a population of 741,096 residents. Lol Although I wasn't surprised, I found Detroit and all of Michigan's numbers depressing. You know a state is experiencing a serious out migration of people when the state as a whole is losing people. If I'm not mistaken, Michigan was the only state to actually lose people. As much as I love Detroit and would love to see it become relevant again, it's too far gone. Detroit is done and will never recover.

You know a state is experiencing a serious out migration of people when the state as a whole is losing people. If I'm not mistaken, Michigan was the only state to actually lose people. As much as I love Detroit and would love to see it become relevant again, it's too far gone. Detroit is done and will never recover. Louisville and its county merged. It did not grow nearly that much. It's similar to Indianapolis and Marion County where city totals are not nearly what the numbers suggest. If Columbus did the same thing, its population would be over 1 million. And I might agree that Detroit will probably never regain the population level that it once had, but I do think the central core will rebuild.
March 24, 201114 yr As for something cool, check out the new 2010 Census - Census Tract Reference Maps: Yeah I did and unfortunatly they fiddled with the tract geography for Dayton city, so you cant do a direct tract to tract comparison from 1990 to 2000 to 2010. 1990 and 2000 are comparble, but not 2010 and 2000. Rearranging the boundaries for, say, a West Dayton tract to take in the VA will mask the depopulation going on in that tract, so the declines wont look so bad. Same with merging Mcphersontown and Grafton Hill into the same tract.
March 24, 201114 yr It did not grow nearly that much. I think the Louisville MSA grew by 12%-14%. The kicker is the core county grew, too, which is more than you can say for a number of Ohio metro areas.

March 25, 201114 yr I find it very hard to believe that Atlanta only increased by 0.8%. The population was estimated to be right around 540K, and when the Census released the numbers, the city clocked in at a measly 420K. This number CAN"T be right. I think this is a result of a lot of people refusing to participate. You can go to certain parts of Atlanta and see a lot of Mexicans, which some may possibly be illegals and therefore reluctant to participate. I don't know exactly how Census works in assuring everyone is counted, but I know a person who worked for the Census and claimed how much of a "joke" it was. He said some people slammed doors in their faces and refused to participate, while other houses had dogs running wild in their yards in which they said "forget it." I know several people who claim they never received a Census form and that no one ever came to their home requesting their participation. Some received the form, but never returned it or forget to return it and never had a knock at the door. It seems like if the Census Bureau was as assertive as they claimed, I would have happened to see a least one person walking around the neighborhood collecting data. I never saw anyone, and I'm pretty sure Madisonville's (where I live) participation rate was not all that impressive. I remember hearing on the news how Cincinnati was lagging in Census participation during the time when they were still collecting data. I'm willing to bet a lot of people were not counted. Many people unfortunately hold the same opinions on the Census as they do with voting (don't care and consider it irrelevant). I wish people would really grasp the importance of participation in the Census. With New York's numbers - I'm not surprised Buffalo lost close to 11% of it's residents. I am surprised that Brooklyn only grew by 1.6%. I'm also surprised that Schenectady, NY increased by 7%, bringing it's population to 66, 135. I guess I'm not the only one who knows how much of a hidden gem the town truly is. Lol
March 25, 201114 yr Every city hs the same issues with the Census. Sure some more than others. I think the estimates got way off track because of countless condos being built but sit there empty and the area benefitted from significant in migration that crashed hard with the recession and housing bust. There is no way the city could have grown in the fashion that the estimates had to begin with.
March 25, 201114 yr Louisville metro area growth rates....note how the growth is some of the best since the tail end of the postwar boom era (1960s): 2000s: 13.6% 1990s: 10.0% 1980s: 5.1% 1970s: 4.4% 1960s: 19.6%

March 25, 201114 yr And Dayton is now smaller than Joliet and Rockford (!) Illinois. Wow. I wonder how long will it take to drop below 125,000, or even 100,000.
March 25, 201114 yr So the only top 50 metros to decline are Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and New Orleans? That is depressing for the Great Lakes region. :(

March 26, 201114 yr ^Thanks for posting that ColDay. With the exception of Chicago, I'm rather surprised that the cities in Illinois fared so well. Ohio's numbers are ugly, plain and simple. I'm kind of shocked Baltimore is still losing residents. Baltimore City decreased in population, but Baltimore County increased; so essentially people are moving from the city limits to the immediate surrounding areas. I also never realized Texas had that many cities with populations over 100K.
March 26, 201114 yr HOw small is Salt Lake City geographically? I assumed it would be more like other mid-sized Western metros (like Albuquerque or Denver or whatever).
March 27, 201114 yr Ohio is in need of some serious help. ColDays post above is really discouraging and upsetting. Where id we go wrong in the past 30 years that other states such as Texas, Utah, heck, even Illinois did so right. Even looking at Erie, PA. I just wonder if it was 40 miles west in the Ohio borders, would it have suffered dramatic losses. Do you think it's jsut the weather that drives people out, or the prospects of something new in a new land. People keep saying that Florida, Nevada and California finally got what they had coming to them throughout the recession that started in 2008. I really don't think it matters however. I think the trend for people to begin building again in those states will come right back once the economy turns around.
March 27, 201114 yr The big thing with the southern cities are their Hispanic Population. Just look at, in several of the cities they are the largest population group. We dont see that as much here since we are far away from the border.
March 27, 201114 yr The big thing with the southern cities are their Hispanic Population. Just look at, in several of the cities they are the largest population group. We dont see that as much here since we are far away from the border. It's not just the hispanics. Look at the out-migration from Ohio to the Carolina's or somewhere else down south. I can not tell you how many of my childhood friends have moved to different locals down south. They think it is pretty cool that I have been here almost all of my life, but at the same time, they can not believe it. And I will say, they have all found alot of success down south. Sometimes I look back on the first 20 years oif my career and wonder if I mad ethe right decision not to follow my job to southern locations. The opportunity has come several times, but family keeps me here...and Cleveland does too. I really do love the city, but it can nbe very very frustrating at times. Hopefully are corruption scandles are under control ( Really apologize for ranting and going off topic).
March 28, 201114 yr New York City plans to challenge the census, saying that the gain reported undercounted the city's population: http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/03/27/new.york.census.challenge/index.html?hpt=T2
March 28, 201114 yr Considering the various problems mentioned above, indicating a general lack of due diligence on the Census Bureau's part, it seems perfectly logical to challenge the real counts.

Baltimore City decreased in population, but Baltimore County increased; so essentially people are moving from the city limits to the immediate surrounding areas. They lost people but all of their demographics shot up such as average income and education level.
March 28, 201114 yr Do you think it's jsut the weather that drives people out, or the prospects of something new in a new land. I don't think it's the weather, not at all. But I do think there's a definite "grass is greener" attitude in those who move out. Cleveland is the butt of so many jokes, locally and nationally. Growing up in Cleveland there's a "I'd love to move away from Cleveland but I'm stuck here" attitude that so many have. It's infectious. I moved from Cleveland to Seattle within the last census, my main reasons were: -Lack of a new age economy in Cleveland -All my friends were moving away from Cleveland, as well as family -Attitude of people in Cleveland, bitter, close minded, and defensive -I like outdoor activities - Boston Mills, Lake Erie, and the Metroparks just weren't cutting it -Living in a declining metropolis is depressing, no hope for Cleveland to turn the corner Those are the main reasons I moved away; I'm sure it's different for everyone. Please take what I said with a grain of salt. It's only my personal opinion. :-)
March 28, 201114 yr ^^I love how people say there is no hope for struggling Rust Belt cities. Unless you have a crystal ball, nobody truly knows what the future holds. I don't want to sound cliche, but history tends to repeat itself. Things always change...sixty years ago this part of the country was humming along with no end in sight and now we're struggling. I'm not saying things will definitely turn around here. However, I do believe change is the only constant in life.

March 28, 201114 yr I hate when people say we are defensive. Sorry we dont let people talk shit about us, with no basis, and not say anything in return. And when we do defend ourselves, we use facts and reason. And the thing is, a large portion of people who talk shit on Cleveland are people from the suburbs, I would know, thats were I grew up. Those people are clearly not "defensive."
March 29, 201114 yr Ah, the "don't let the door hit your ass on the way out" reaction. Considering the census results, I don't think any Ohioan can afford to have this attitude anymore. Clefan98's response is unacceptable.
March 29, 201114 yr ^Agreed. Any time we lose smart, talented people to other states, that is a loss for Ohio. In fact, at this point, just retaining any sort of population should be a priority.
March 29, 201114 yr If we were talking about someone without a history who was simply expressing an opinion, I'd be inclined to agree. However, "I Went West" has been a troll on this forum (and others) for quite some time - both before and after his relocation. Most of his posts revolve around just how terrible things were for him, and now how much more wonderful his life has become since moving away, and projecting his reality as though it should be gospel for everyone. If he could express those sentiments without belittling Clevelanders with the same broad brush, he wouldn't be getting flack. Oh - where I come from, the phrase is "don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya." With that, let's get back on topic. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 29, 201114 yr I guess it should be mentioned that Louisville did not magically gain 484,000 residents in the past decade. It was the largest city in 3 decades to merge back in 2003... and went from 256,000 to 693,000 based on the 2000 census. But I'm curious as to how the 484,000 was counted... Good to see Lexington posting up some impressive gains, despite the high land prices and the looming lack of available land within the urban service boundary. There is approximately 10 years worth of land left at current consumption rates, and the city is already using up the 'expansion' set aside in 2003.
March 29, 201114 yr Lexington is somewhat of a sleeper city. I was pretty impressed. It's in the middle of nowhere, but it seems like a pleasant place to live.
