Posted February 26, 201114 yr Hi all, I'm going to be attending the University of Toledo's Medical Campus (3000 Arlington Ave, Toledo, OH 43614) starting this August. I'm from Metro Detroit and literally have no idea about anything in Toledo. I'm looking for an affordable apartment that is safe and as close to campus as possible. If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it. Note: When I say close, I mean if the immediate area is safe, I'd like to stay there, but if it's not, I'd be willing to drive 15-20 minutes. Also, since I'm from Metro Detroit and would be driving north to get home, anything north from the UT Medical Campus would get preference. Thanks!
February 26, 201114 yr Welcome to the board. There are alot of apartments around the campus that are affordable, however, I think they can be a bit seedy (sp). You find these along Airport Highway and Byrne and a few along Glendale. As far as a 15 to 20 minute commute to campus goes, don't worry about that as there is very little traffic in Toledo, and most everything around Toledo is about 15 to 20 minutes apart. I lived at a place called Hampshire Heights for about a year many years ago. It was nice. Pretty much college students there. The neighborhood around there (Old Orchard and Ottawa Hills) is very nice. Plenty of shopping and eating options. It is also about a minute from I 475. The lcoation of these are at Secor and Central by the Westgate shopping Center. These are about a 15 to 20 minute comute to campus. Another option would be the Country Club apartments on Door near Reynolds. These are nice, and a bit more pricey then Hampshire Heights. They are about a 15 minute commute to campus. I really don't know whats in Perrysburg, but being SOuth of Toledo, you may not want that anyhow. Thirdly, Steeplechase apartments out in Springfield Township are nice. They are I believe at Door, and Holland/Sylvania Road. Still, probably 20 minutes max to campus. All the options I gave you are north of campus, and within I 475 by 10 minutes. When I lived at Hampshire Heights, I worked in Taylor, Michigan and got off at the Eureka Road exit. Door to Door to me 45 minutes when getting on 475 at Douglas and taking that to 75 North.
February 28, 201114 yr The administration seems to drive students toward the Southwyck part of town, toward Springfield township, along Heatherdowns and Glendale, southwest of campus. I lived over there the first year of med school. When my lease was finished I found a house on craigslist in the Old Orchard neighborhood which I enjoyed a lot more than living in a semi-rural part of town. I vote for living near the main campus. The area around the health campus is dumpy/depressing with car break-ins, occasional gunshots. Half of a large nearby apartment complex burned down while i was in school there because someone set fireworks off inside. Old West End is nice too, close to St Vincent's hospital where you will probably be rotating, and a short drive on 25 (multilane higher speed highway with at-grade crossings) from the health campus. Living in "northern Toledo" will be closer for you when you return from the D. The extra 20 minutes getting to the area southwest of campus got irritating (I went to Detroit a lot while living there). And it's closer to Ann Arbor. "Northern Toledo" (in quotes) is referred to as West Toledo by locals because the north-south axis is the Maumee River which runs diagonally.
