March 9, 201114 yr Minneapolis in January! A brave soul, you are. I've only been there in August and early September, and it was gorgeous then. That was years ago, before they had the light rail; I need to return. Excellent photos!
March 10, 201114 yr Good tour. Thanks for the pics. One of my favorite towns, especially its neighborhoods. Strange that they never really have embraced the river, even today...may be that it is too industrial.
March 10, 201114 yr Strange that they never really have embraced the river, even today...may be that it is too industrial. The river also sinks way down and is not really approachable from either side. I'm not sure what you could really do with that narrow, rocky waterway in an urban center.
March 10, 201114 yr I never cared for their light-rail system (too suburban in most spots; at-grade crossings for most of the trip; blah blah) but the city is wonderful (particularly their park system). Yes, much of their LRT system is very suburban. But I do give them credit for having modern light rail vehicles that are ADA compliant (unlike Denver and St. Louis). The Hiawatha Line also connects many major nodes including the airport, Mall of America, Central Business District, stadium, ballpark, arena, and government center. I suspect the new line that will split and head over to St. Paul will drastically improve the system. I also like that they invested to upgrade their stations to allow for three-car vehicles.

March 12, 201114 yr The Hiawatha lin Good tour. Thanks for the pics. One of my favorite towns, especially its neighborhoods. Strange that they never really have embraced the river, even today...may be that it is too industrial. There can be improvements, but it's definitely getting better with new development. Even some of the exiting parkspace close by the banks needs work. When I was in planning school at Michigan, we visited Minneapolis for a week to tour different departments, and architecture firms in the city, and on the final day volunteered to clean up a park. It REALLY needed cleaning up. For a city that gets a good rep for their parks, there needs to be more investment along the river. There's some stunning geography with the steep hills. Make use of that in an interesting way.

It HAD to be suburban to prove it could work. It's more of a line to connect destinations. Obviously I'm all for them building transit in the city, but you now how politics can get in the way.
March 13, 201114 yr I never cared for their light-rail system (too suburban in most spots; at-grade crossings for most of the trip; blah blah) but the city is wonderful (particularly their park system). I felt this way about it too. It somewhat reminded me of Charlotte's light rail. I was actually highly impressed with my visit there, since I really wasn't expecting much because I didn't know what TO expect. I think I expected Minneapolis to feel like a big town, but it actually looks and feels like a big city. The city was actually older and more industrial than what I was expecting which is what I was really impressed with. I should have took more time to explore their parks. Another thing that stood out to me is that there seemed to be a lot of above average looking females there. There seemed to be a surprising amount of exotic 'ethnic' looking females. I went in July, so there was a lot of skin being flaunted. The bars and clubs were highly integrated too, and the nightlife was A+. I really need to take another trip there. Great pics btw too.
March 16, 201114 yr If you are to visit Minneapolis I would definitely recommend going in the summer, when it is warmer, and catching a baseball game at the Twins' beautiful new ballpark.
March 16, 201114 yr very nice work. they have quite a dynamic big city styled urban core and overall its an easy city to love. If you are to visit Minneapolis I would definitely recommend going in the summer, when it is warmer, and catching a baseball game at the Twins' beautiful new ballpark. naaah, i'd say definately visit in winter, embrace the city for what it is, a winter wonderland! i would love to check out the new ballpark tho. how far along is the new lightrail? construction was just getting going in lowertown st paul when i was there last winter. that will be a great leap forward for their rail services. i saw firm plans for an expanded rail network and more commuter rail too, i think even to fargo? they are not just talking they are doing it up there!
