Posted January 9, 200619 yr One of Hamilton's four historic districts, the German Village is most unique. With its own small business district and riverfront location, the neighborhood has nothing but potential. The district sits at the edge of downtown and holds the Lane Public Library, the main location for the library system that now has locations in Oxford and Fairfield and is the oldest library west of the Alleghenies. St. Julie, an old school, and YWCA are beautiful structures that grace the area. Today, the village has a healthy core, but the edges on the north side and east side are depresesed, so you will see a mixture throughout. October 5, 200618 yr I stumbled on this site and had to register in order to thank you for these wonderful photos. I spent the first 23 years of my life in the German Village and I really appreciate that you have captured its many facets. When I was young, the village had it's own festival each year and there was a real sense of community. In the 90s, everything was awful. Many of the older residents moved away and much of the housing became rental property. Today, it seems that the neighborhood is prime for a comeback. I hope that others can see its potential as you have displayed it here. Thanks again!

I hope that others can see its potential as you have displayed it here. Thanks again! It is kind of funny, I just returned from the German Village, I took a walk after visiting Lane. German Village just recently started a Summerfest and Christmas Walk (I believe those are the names). I haven't made it to either yet, but I know a lady who bought and renovated a rental home for her family, and she had good reviews. She actually moved into the Village because she could walk downtown; I was glad to hear that. I too think the area is prime for a resurgence. The Riversedge development will breathe new life into the Village, and form a better connection with downtown and the river. The neighborhood association is working to develop a streetscape plan for the entire district, with plans for major improvements to Third St, possibly restoring the brick streets. New ornate street signs were recently installed, at several intersections, I'll have to get a pic sometime.

April 6, 200718 yr ^I'll try to get one. The brick streets are probably far off, but they are going to built a lighted arch over 3rd St. this year, that should be interesting. The old Academy opened back up as 3rd St. Tap and Grille; I was there last night and was very impressed!

I totally forgot to look the last time I was home. I'll have to remember to check out the Grille the next time I make it up. Sounds GREAT. I did head over to the new restaurant/bar that opened on Main Street in the old Burg's building. Not so impressed, but I was happy that SOMEONE is trying to do something with that great old building.
October 17, 200717 yr I thought I had a photo of the new street signs, but can't find one in my files. I'll try to get one sometime; maybe the construction of the arch will start by then. I love what they've done with the Riverbank (interior and exterior), but the menu is still coming together. I've been there about a dozen times now and tried a number of things; some items are definitely better than others. They've got the pizzas down, however.
